This is the discussion thread where my COT players can discuss their SS characters.

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

Okay, I have enough ideas on the back burner that I could fill just about any role. So far we have a frontliner(?) and a witch(?), which means I could go for a divine caster or maybe a ranged fighter type. I've never played an actual ranger, so I might do something of that nature. Perhaps a Bonuwat pirate/sailor from the Shackles, or even a straight-up cleric of Besmara...

m Human Ftr 9 HP:110/110 AC*:33,23,30 Saves:10/8*/9* CMB: +19 CMD: 38 Init: +3 Perc: +14 Link to the spreadsheet

yeah, stranded on an island does make it hard to find resources for a gun. Did not know that when I first came up with the idea. I could just go all out and purchase 50 shots lol. Definitely looking at witch now. Probably a debuffer with evil eye, misfortune, and cackle. At second level healing hex.

Male Human Techno-geek-dad/40ish

Not sure where I'm going yet. I'll pull up HeroLab tonight and roll through the list and see what stands out at me.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

Would you be open to a tengu character? Depending on what Phoenix decides to go for, they would be either a cleric of Hei Feng or a rogue—or perhaps a mix of the two, if I'm feeling particularly adventurous. A warpriest with a nine-ring broadsword could be cool, as well. I still have my earlier ideas to fall back to, if that's not acceptable.

And yes, I might just be trying to find a way to play Vasco all the time. I love corvids. :P

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

Yes. I will allow a tengu character. You all might even run into a tengu {hint hint}

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

I'm sure RichD will consider whatever you can come up with! We're not really in a hurry or anything, so take your time.

...or you could join the TENGU CLUB™ with me. Clutchmates? :3

Maybe? I dunno.

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

Well, let me know if you want to cooperate on something. We could make characters who are connected, fluffwise and/or crunchwise (family traits, teamwork feats, etc.). I'm just waiting to learn what Phoenix wants to play so I know my options...

Don't be afraid to shoot any concepts my way. I know there are people that create some strange, overpowered characters and that's what I try to avoid. i.e. Here is my half-dragon half-drow CE Fire-breathing, sword wielding fighter!

Having played with you all for 2+ years, I do not think that will be the case.

I have also had someone pm me expressing interest in playing with you all. They are willing to submit any character to fill a void.

Thoughts?

Silver Crusade

She/They/He

Okay, I'll try to think of something then and post it.

As for the mystery player, um, there's nothing really to have thoughts on? We don't know who they are or what they're making.

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

Yeah, we can't really make an informed decision. Do you know them? Would you say that they are a good player? I wouldn't add just anybody, not knowing how they might fit into the existing dynamic.

If we do add someone, I'd like them to be either parsed through a recruitment or recommended by someone within the group.

Not worried either way. If they seem active on the boards then why not.

This game doesn't show up in my campaign list and I completely lost track of it! So sorry for the delay.

I'd love to tie in a backstory Neirikr. I can put something Tengu together with teamwork feats, sounds fun! Cavalier? Inquisitor? Something teamworky?

Male Human Techno-geek-dad/40ish

Ok thinking maybe a Tengu Inquisitor of Hei Feng. More later.

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

I would be fine with two tengu characters.

I'm game, though I've since come to realise that teamwork feats are pretty hard to do at these levels. We'd have to spend our precious first-level feat to get any to begin with, and waiting until third level seems like areally long time. Do you think we should go for them right off the bat? Are there any teamwork feats that would make up for the lack of, say, a universally useful combat feat like Power Attack? Are you going for melee or ranged?

If RichD is amenable to hybrid classes, I'd like to make my tengu a warpriest of Hei Feng. That way, we can collectively take care of divine casting about as well as a full cleric, and get in some fighting ability and skills to boot.

TG1 | GW | FF | RH

Yes, teamwork feats are difficult to capitalize on in early levels unfortunately. I'll need to scrub the teamwork feat list to see if anything stands out that is particularly special. I am planning on going ranged, but not being able to drop the feat into the shot categories is going to slow me down. I suppose this is why people usually give up on teamwork feats. Last time I went that route I used a human so that I could at least get started early with them.

I think if RichD allows it, fluff wise a warpriest of Hei Feng would go very nicely with the inquisitor. Lots of fluff tie-ins to be shared there!

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

I would allow a warpriest and inquisitor.

I received another PM from the person that wants to join, this is what he said.

Hey,

Thanks for getting back to me. So I have been a consistent, at least 1 post per day, poster, if not more for the last few years. My regular gaming group has gone through 2 sets of level 1-8 characters in PFS, Books 1-3 in RoW, and I joined a Carrion Crown AP and a bunch of other stuff. In addition to playing I have run 2 psionics games, and a year + homebrew on the Paizo Site. Most of that ended in April when my mom's health really started to decline.

Now we split time between PbP and GoogleHangouts. On Mythweavers (where my regular gaming group now games) we just finished with the Kingmaker Prologue - my GM is incredible and that game is going strong.

Any of the players can cyber-stalk my Paizo profile, and feel free to share all this information with them. I have over 6K posts. Most notably I have gamed with PainLord and BoldStrider - Blodstrider then recruited me for his Carrion Crown game (that has since been abandoned) if you know them.

Here are some notable (References):

Here is my GM 'GMs Guide to Recruitment'. I am specifically referenced in Point 6 as I was the first timer he recruited oh so long ago.

Here are a few posts:

My first PbP game on Paizo I wrote an Epilogue to our first adventure because I was so worried I'd get cut from the group. Over three years later we are still great friends and still gaming together.

Hope that helps,

Look it over and discuss it. I usually preder to have 5 PCs, and since this is be my second time through, and a one off, I think I might want to up the challenge factor a tad.

The more the merrier I say! He looks pretty seasoned and I don't have any reservations about welcoming him in with both claws.

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

That's quite the resume. Okay, I'm convinced. :P

@Phoenix: I've been going through teamwork feats, and these two stood out to me: Coordinated Shot and Enfilading Fire. The lack of feats is still a problem, though. Should we just... be humans? I know I'm the one who brought up tengus to begin with, but I'm not that married to the idea. We could just be connected through fluff, but would be nice to have a mechanical connection as well.

The other idea I had was to be of the Bonuwat ethnicity, maybe worshipping Besmara or Shimye-Magalla. That way, we could still do the inquisitor/warpriest combo. What do you think?

m Human Ftr 9 HP:110/110 AC*:33,23,30 Saves:10/8*/9* CMB: +19 CMD: 38 Init: +3 Perc: +14 Link to the spreadsheet

5 is great. Looking forward to it.

Male Human Techno-geek-dad/40ish

If you wanted to stick with Tengu for the flavor with a different class that isn't so feat intensive we can still do that, but I'm perfectly fine switching to a Bonuwat human as well. I think it's the only viable way we can still get our teamwork feats and not feel completely useless.

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

I think I'm more interested in playing a warpriest than a tengu. There's a dearth of good tengu avatars, anyway. :P

Let's go Bonuwat, then. Do you have any opinions on the deity? I think that informs a lot about the characters, both fluff- and crunchwise.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I hope this is the beginning of a great game and I hope I contribute positively to everyone's enjoyment.

On to character creation. So I did a bit of cyberstalking myself and found this:

DM RichD wrote:

For book 1 of SS you are shipwrecked on a deserted [heh heh] island. The book will take you from level 1 - 3, so you will have to map out your characters accordingly.

Here is my standard Character creation:

Character Creation Guidelines

- 20 point character buy. All scores 10 or greater after racial adjustments.
- Pathfinder Core Rule Book & Advanced Player’s Guide only.
- Two traits.*
- Maximum gold for 1st level, maximum hit points all levels.
- Alignment. LG, NG preferred. CG, LN, TN acceptable. NO CN or evil.

*I can't remember if SS has its own traits and I am at work so I don't have access to the Player's Guide, but if it does one trait must be from that.

Now having played with you all for two years, if you want to play a character outside of the above, let me know.

So now that I have the outline, I will wait until you four have decided upon characters before I submit mine to fill in any niche or compliment your characters. I do have three already built, but I will have to tweak them to fit the Core & APG only restriction. I would also be happy to write a backstory with anyone.

Male Human Techno-geek-dad/40ish

Welcome TheBobJones to our humble little group of miscreants, er, heroes!

@RichD - How strict is this Core & APG guideline? I'm not trying to go off the rails, but are you flexible with other Paizo core rulebooks? Unchained, Advanced Class, Ultimate Combat, etc? I'm willing to get you whatever references from the books you need.

@Neirikr - Coordinated Shot will work for level one. Enfilading Fire can't be had at level one because it requirs PBS, Precise Shot and another teamwork feat. It could be a selection later however.

Shimye-Magalla could be fun, I've never tried that one before!

Male Half-Human Roleplayer 4 / Linguist 2 / Translator 4

@TheBobJones: Welcome aboard!

@Phoenix: Coordinated Shot it is, then. All of the melee/ranged assist feats kind of suck for the frontliner, though, since I would have to take ranged feats and then.... not use them? Looks like they are meant to be used exclusively by cavaliers/inquisitors, which is kind of an odd design choice. I suppose I could go for more of a switch hitter, but I can't afford Weapon Finesse to better utilise my Dexterity...

Okay, assuming that it is okay with RichD, I think I'll begin with a level of Daring Champion, and then multiclass into Warpriest from level two onwards. That way, I'll get the feat tax out of the way ASAP.

For a divine caster, I think worshipping Shimye-Magalla would mean that we both pick either Desna or Gozreh for the mechanical stuff. I think I'm leaning towards Desna to play on a redemption angle. An ex-pirate who regrets his earlier life of crime, turning to religion. The belated divine spells would work for that pretty well too, with him coming into the faith at an older age. Do you think you could play into that somehow?

Just checking in. So I find myself with some unusual free time this weekend. Am I correct that these are the potential roles so far?

  • Neirikr - Cavalier/Warpriest
  • Rising Phoenix - Inquisitor (Archery?)
  • DM Variel - Witch
  • Rysky - ?

I have this thing about not playing a race and a class twice (except human just because Golarion ... oh and I did make an elf brother for my primary elf magus ... but that was strictly RP) and I find myself with only a few Standard Races left. Would you consider allowing me to play a Catfolk or other such race?

As for potential classes, I see we are light on Arcane. I was working on an Unchained Summoner (Naturalist) and an Unchained Rogue (Knifemaster) because who doesn't love knives, for some potential characters. Let me know if that seems ok at first blush. I know that based upon the character creation guidelines you are not looking for uber Min/Max, and I promise not to create an OP character, I just really, really love character creation.

Well, it can't be more weird than two tengus. :P

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

As long as the catfolk doesn't try to eat the tengus, I'm fine with it. :D

@Neirkr:Daring Champion is fine.

@The Rising Phoenix: That is my standard guideline, but since I have played with you all I'm flexible. If you have a concept you want to try out, run it by me. The only thing I am not flexible is the alignment. Don't want the evil character killing everyone off for food supplies! :P

DM RichD wrote:

Ha! I was thinking the same thing. I'll post both builds later today for feedback with an abstract background. Once we lock characters in I will flesh it out the chosen character's background more.

UnSummoner:

BACKSTORY
M. Mistoffelees, summoner extraordinaire. Son of the infamous duo Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer. Mistoffelees spent the better part of his youth traveling Golarion with his parents, yet the happiest times he could remember were the times he wandered on his own. For some reason during the solitude of these excursions he always seemed drawn to the trees. Tall trees, short trees, fruit trees, pine trees, it made no difference. He would walk up to any tree, encircle his arms about them, use his claws to climb them, and take a short nap in them. He made friends with the elves in the Mierani Forest, the werewolves of the Ashwood, the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah of the Churlwood, and even the gnomes of the Sanos Forest.

Reaching maturity, his parents encouraged him to strike out on his own and find his way in the world. Blessed with innate magics, he shunned the more popular Acadamae for the The Twilight Academy. There Mistoffelees mastered the art of conjuration, eventually forming a bond with his Eidolon, Skimbleshanks, or Skimble as Mistoffelees liked to call it. Believed that he was blessed by Densa with this traveling companion, Mistoffelees can also be seen offering homage to Erastil. Mistoffelees believes it is because of this that he seems to only be able to conjure natural beasts.

By a series of unfortunate consequences, Mistoffelees found himself on the Shackles. Looking for any means necessary to get out of the pirate isles, he couldn't be happier to be on the Jenivere bound for Sargava. Once there Mistoffelees for sure will head south towards the Laughing Jungle. Maybe stay on the coast and check out the Kaava Lands. Probably the Laughing Jungle. He thinks.

UnRogue:

BACKSTORY
Munkustrap of the River. The Yondabakari River. The largest and most heavily traveled in all of Varisia, Munkustrap grew up in the swamp of the Mushfens watching rafts float on by. From a young age Munkustrap loved the weighted feel of a knife hilt in his hand, tossing blade over hilt, snatching it in midair, spinning it across his knuckles, and sheathing it up his sleeve. Working for a time on the docks, he quickly grew bored of the hard work and monotony of loading and unloading.

Leaving the on the first boat he could, he sailed the remaining length of the Yondabakari to the Varisian Gulf. Once out to sea, bound for the Shackles, Munkustrap realized the vast difference between a river voyage, and an open sea voyage. The voyage caused new heights of boredom to drive Munkustrap crazy. He longed for the old, carefree days of his youth. Eventually reaching the Shackles, a man who was good with a knife would never go unwanted. Roaming with various toughs and gangs, a series of unfortunate events make a quick egress aboard the Jenivere almost a necessity. He looks eagerly towards new adventures in the relatively untamed expanse that is Sargava. Why, he was practically destined to join the The Rivermen's Guild based in Port Freedom. Absolutely. I'm on the same page with you as when I last looked at this I was planning on the Desna side for Shimye-Magalla as well. I found a post on the forum from James Jacobs where he outlined which domains we should use for this situation.

As a strange sort of combination of Desna and Gozreh, Shimye-Magalla is not actually one entity. It is, in fact, Desna and Gozreh. Worshipers of Shimye-Magalla can thus choose from the domains granted by Desna OR those granted by Gozreh.
However, if that messes with the admittedly pleasing to the OCD minded setup of every deity offering 5 domains, I would say that Shimye-Magalla would grant the following since they represent the strongest crossover between the two deities:

Air, Water, Luck, Travel, Weather

I've been on travel for work for a week and I have one more week left. If I get some time this week I'll try to flush out my character before I get home.

Male Human Techno-geek-dad/40ish

I'm working on my crunch now. With regards to healing, we looking for me to cover the bulk of healing at level one until our witch gets healing hex, yes?

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

@TheBobJones: Both of those characters look good. (and yes, I did catch the Cats reference.)

@Everyone: I have returned from vacation! For the COT players, I will work on starting the Boss fight which will end the book. After that we will kick this game into gear.

Keep working on those characters!

Feel free to shoot me any questions.

Male Human (Bonuwat) Daring Champion 1

Here is the profile I plan on using for my character. Not much in there yet, but I'll keep adding things as I have the time.

Good find! Luck and Weather would seem fitting for my character. Fluffwise, I imagine the syncretistic elements would focus on sea travel specifically, seeing as the Bonuwat are a people of sailors.

I think the two of us can cover healing together, at least when I get my spells. That way, our witch can use her full caster-y goodness on other things. Having healing hex wouldn't hurt, of course.

Welcome back. Good luck to you all in your Boss Fight. Very excited to start this game.

So is there a character you all feel compliments your group better between M. Mistoffelees, or Munkustrap? I have no problem scrapping them and making new characters if needed. Just let me know.

I know not of what you speak good sir. ;)

I don't think we have disable device covered yet, so I'd lean towards the rogue. But honestly, we'll make whatever you pick work so I'd say pick the one you want to play the most!

I am planning on going Luck myself. I have her crunch done, I just need to write up the backstory and create the profile now.

Alias created with my current crunch.

@RichD - Can you initialize the gameplay tab so this will start showing up in my campaigns list?

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

I believe I have created it. Let me know if you all see it.

Male Human (Bonuwat) Daring Champion 1

I can see it. Dotted and deleted.

Hope your BBEG fight is going well. Any ETA on a start date? No rush, just wondering.

Rysky any idea what you are going to play?

Looking forward to gaming with you all soon.

Silver Crusade

She/They/He

No, sorry, still haven't been able to come up with anything.

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

Once Rysky comes up with a character, we can start.

@Rysky: Are there any character concepts you want to run by me?

@All:I have posted in the gameplay thread some background information to help you continue to think about your characters.

Silver Crusade

She/They/He

I honestly don’t know what to make or suggest.

NARRATOR GS Map / SS MAP/

So far it looks like:

Kimye Enani: Human Inquisitor (AKA Mera)
Ekije Ihejirka: Human Daring Champion (AKA Naberius)
Neltji: Human Witch (AKA Tal)

M. Mistoffelees: Catfolk Summoner
OR
Munkustrap of the River: Catfolk Rogue (AKA TheBobJones)
