As the party travels through the tunnels, Asht'el and his small companion become visible once again. "I know I don't look like I did," he explains to the boy, "and my name is not really Belkah, it is Asht'el. But I'd never pass as a drow with a Katapeshi name, so I called myself Belkah. But I promise I'm the same person you met, I just look different." He briefly relates the conversation they had when they first met, to prove his identity and reassure the boy.

As they arrive at the large, dimly glowing cavern, Asht'el is a bit too preoccupied with the boy and the squirming bundle he's carrying in a pillowcase to notice much around him.

Xiddik's eyes narrow as she sees Ruxi and hears the drow. Her teeth bare, but she says nothing.

When the signs of activity are discovered, the kobold scowls. She crouches low and begins sniffing the area, running her scaly fingers over the stone.

G$&@!@mit.

EDIT: Misread and thought Njord was making an aid check. Fixed the total in light of not getting Aid bonuses.

Xiddik estimates that 3 humanoids (likely drow) and two large clawed quadrupeds came this way. Beyond that can't cannot deduce much.

Shall I assume the party continues onward cautiously?

Totally. Xiddik can lead us.

Moving forward the fungal forest thins until it comes to large clearing. At its center is a huge engraved stone archway similar to the one that party passed through to reach the Darklands - an Elfgate. It appears to already be active and, within its glowing heart, brilliant lights flash as arcs of stray magical energy roll off of its edges.

Three dark elves stand guard over the portal. Two are equipped like most Vonnarc guards, with rapier and hand crossbows at their hips. In their hands they hold lengths of heavy chain attached to the hulking reptilian beasts snarling before them. The third is familiar though he's wearing a bit more than the last time the party saw him - the Second Son Tiryin Vonnarc.

Xiddik and anyone else up front needs to roll a stealth check.

Dungeoneering but you'd need to be stealthing as well.

Randall recognizes these brutes as ghonhatine, flesh-warped troglodytes.

You can learn 2 bits of info.

Rogue 14 [ HP 36/87 (0 NL) | AC 26 Tch 19 FF 20 | Fort +9* Ref +18* Will +10* | CMD 27, 29 vs steal | Init +9 | Perc +21, vs traps +32, trap spotter | Effects: Haste]

What sort of information: Special attacks, Special defenses, Vulnerabilities, that kind of stuff?

Yeah.

Rogue 14 [ HP 36/87 (0 NL) | AC 26 Tch 19 FF 20 | Fort +9* Ref +18* Will +10* | CMD 27, 29 vs steal | Init +9 | Perc +21, vs traps +32, trap spotter | Effects: Haste]

Let's go with special defenses and vulnerabilities, then.

Ghonhatine are known to have incredibly thick hides and are naturally resistant to acid, disease, and poison but otherwise have no special defenses. They have no specific weaknesses.

Rogue 14 [ HP 36/87 (0 NL) | AC 26 Tch 19 FF 20 | Fort +9* Ref +18* Will +10* | CMD 27, 29 vs steal | Init +9 | Perc +21, vs traps +32, trap spotter | Effects: Haste]

Randall signals a retreat back from the gate to discuss. Whispering in each ally's ear, one at a time, he says, "Fleshwarped troglodytes. Very thick hide, resistant to acid and poison." To the spellcasters, "Do you have enough magic left to soften them up? Or should we retreat and wait until you have time to rest?"

Male Elf--Drow (Jamleus) Wizard 14| HP 80/80 | AC 15 | T 15 | FF 11 | CMD 22 | Fort +7 | Ref +10 | Will +11 | Init +4 | Perc +20 | Sense Motive +18 |Effects: Mage Armor +4 AC

Jametor whispers, "I have a special fireball left, plus a few from my staff, plus a couple more of those wind siroccos. So enough for a fight, might be best to toss out the big heavy hitters, then let you folks close to mop up. Make this go quick. To be honest, I don't know that we have time to wait for us to get new spells."

Rogue 14 [ HP 36/87 (0 NL) | AC 26 Tch 19 FF 20 | Fort +9* Ref +18* Will +10* | CMD 27, 29 vs steal | Init +9 | Perc +21, vs traps +32, trap spotter | Effects: Haste]

Nodding, "Very well." Whispering to Xiddik and Firiel, "Try to sneak around them for a devastating first salvo? Or try to draw some of them away from the gate?"

Female Halfling Rog 3 / Sorc 4 / AT 7 [ HP 94/94 (0 NL) | AC 21 Tch 17 FF 16 | Fort +9* Ref +16* Will +14* | CMD 21 | Init +5 | Perc +16 | Effects: none ]

"Sneak around," replies Fíriel equally quietly. "Let the invisible ones get as close as they can safely, too, so that we can all attack at once."

I don't think anyone's invisible anymore.

Rogue 14 [ HP 36/87 (0 NL) | AC 26 Tch 19 FF 20 | Fort +9* Ref +18* Will +10* | CMD 27, 29 vs steal | Init +9 | Perc +21, vs traps +32, trap spotter | Effects: Haste]

Nope. Randall's spell has long expired and the others didn't get it cast on them. We are probably too close to cast anything pre-combat now.

Sneak around and everyone shoot the same target to try and get the numbers down. Pick on Second Son? Take out one of the pets?

Sneaking folks need to give me another stealth check.

I think those are one and the same, with my Stealth roll.

Xiddik and Randall move forward like shadows but the crunch of loose gravel underfoot and an ill-timed belch from Prickles reveals Firiel's location before the trio can fully get into position.

"They're here!" the Second Son shouts while leveling his long curved knife Firiel's direction. "I knew it!"

Randall, Xiddik, and Jametor get a surprise action first.

Hoping Xiddik gives me some SR loving...that's not my best SR roll.

Jametor chants the familiar arcane phrase and flings the fiery bead from his hand. Casting my intensified fireball, even though it's not going to gain anything from my stupid negative level...Aim for the center of the group, trying to miss the gate, but just barely.

Intensified Fireball, DC 20 Reflex: 10d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 1, 5, 4, 5, 5, 1, 2) + 5 = 38

Female Kobold Skirmisher Ranger 5/Bard 8 — HP 87/87 (74/74) | AC 21 (FF 16/T 15) | CMD 24 | Fort +7, Ref +13, Will +7 | Perc +4| Init +7 (+9 underground) | Sense Motive +20

Sorry, you gotta be within 30 feet to be affected.

Xiddik whips out her bow, snarling. "Bah! Your spinebeast ate too many hard fruits, I think. Suppose..."

She trails off, looking between her bow and her ocarina. She can't use both, and a few crucial seconds are wasted as the somewhat average-minded kobold tries to choose.

Finally, tail twitching with irritation, she lowers the bow. "Oh, to hell with it all."

Xiddik begins to sing.

It's not exactly what one would expect. Sometimes the song sounds like a lullaby, other times like an orc ballad. Though its words are in Draconic, the song occasionally uses phrases from Undercommon, Aklo, and even a bit of Elven for some reason.

The story itself is difficult to follow. It is fast-paced and eclectic, ranging from clear and sad to shrill and furious to off-kilter and disorienting. It's a song devoid of genre or purpose. Only Xiddik's flawless voice gives it all some semblance of order, and her allies find themselves filled with new strength.

Inspire Courage, yadda yadda yadda.

Oh, and:

Draconic Portions:
These are the prevailing portions. They tell of a young spider who is flung into a world of bright lights and swooping birds. The spider seeks to build a great web stretching across the sky (its reason for this is poorly explained—it's either to block out the sun or just for art's sake). The song is riddled with basic misunderstandings of the surface world.

Elven Portions:
During a small portion of the song, the main character—a spider—finds a small hollow to hide from the sun. It goes within, but quickly makes a mess of the place with its webbing and has to leave.

Aklo and Undercommon Portions:
During a very small portion of the song, the main character—a very young spider—finds a bird's nest and pushes each of the eggs out. It then attempts to battle the parents and is promptly eaten.

Tiryin avoids it entirely and one of the ghonhatines rolls away from the bulk of the blast but the others are hit by the full force of Jametor's spell. Randall's fiery crossbow bolt further injures the nearer of the two reptilian brutes.

Cocking his head towards the source of the song, the arrogant bare-chested drow warrior smirks.

"An interesting tale and I'm curious how you all went unnoticed for so long. The fact that you knew about this gate suggests you had help from someone within my own house. Perhaps when this is over I'll bring whatever's left of you to a priestess and have the answers extracted.."

He turns a predatory glare towards Jametor.

He has boni to stuff vs Jametor.
