I look eagerly at Lark awaiting any more input. When she starts to talk to Night instead I shift my attention. Adjusting my glasses I speak to the two. "You know, behavioral patterns are mostly cultural and not necessarily inherit of a species. It is just a mannerism. I don't consider myself skilled or a know-it-all, I am just well read. Though I din't see anyone here fitting common stereotypes. Well I haven't really had chance to experience much beyond books....and of course unicorns. At anyrate it is nice to be working with other ponies. A chance to make friends."

"That wasn't the point, the point is if you look hard enough, you can find a reason to call anypony stubborn or foolish or whatever else. It's what you look for in others."

Male Halfling Cloths Designer

Higgs comes flying past in a long loop she calls out,

"O yes make friends by all means, swop cooking tips, talk about them good old days and then watch them die because you where spending to much time a jawing, than you should have been keeping an eye on the bushes, if you had not seen, we are coming to the end of the safe farm lands. Time to keep your wits about you"

She swoops back over Doc and into the lead once more, keeping a look out ahead.

GM Bennies ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

In the last few miles the open farm land has given way to lightly wooded copses, which stand close to the path. As you trudge along the well-used trail you have the feeling that you are being watched.
Without warning, a fierce cry fills the air and a group of small little pig skinned creatures with bestial boar faces burst from the vegetation on the side of the road. With a savage snarl and spears in cloven hoof, they fall upon the party.

Danger Sense! Lark, Gearbox, and Shepard make notice roles rolls at a -2. DC is 4. Due to Doc Gearbox's Porc Detector, I am allowing him a danger sense check as well due to the circumstances! Sucess mean you start the 1st round of combat on hold. If you are on hold, make an agility check to see who goes 1st. All the porcs have surprise so they are on hold too, so your gonna want to interrupt their actions right?

If any of you three gain a raise on this check, I will allow to use your insight of the attack to give everyone a warning to totally negate surprise!

Surprise! Everyone who did not succeed/have a danger sense roll make a notice roll, DC 4. Failure means that you are caught off gaurd and you do not get to act this round.

Once surprise is sorted out, I will Explain the layout and we will go into initiative! IF I can manage the time I will try to have a map in play, but no promises...

DM Rolls:

Err GM just wanted to point out I did say I was air born and scouting upfront, Doc said that me and Lark do this for the last part of the path, I do not know if LArk is, She will have to say so, but I have been from the start, do I get a notice roll for doing this?"

Notice: 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
another -1... heh, looks like my actions remain unchanged... this will be interesting for a first combat :P good luck everypony

If I understand this right, I roll my Notice skill and the wild die, and if I get a max on either, I roll that die again?
Notice: 1d6 + 1d8 - 2 ⇒ (2) + (5) - 2 = 5
Also, Higgs, fairly certain you only get a normal roll, like the rest--especially given you'd just left your scouting to reprimand us. ;P

About to make a retort to Higgs, Lark suddenly freezes. "Why's the ground--"

Agility: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Do I add a Wild Die to this Attribute roll? If so, 1d6 ⇒ 5

GM Bennies ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you roll the action die and the skill die separately. So in Lark's case you roll a d8-2 and a d6-2 for the action dice and you take the higher of the two rolls. So with the above rolls, Lark is looking at a 3 total which fails. You still get the notice roll for surprise though. Also for note you usually add action die to attribute rolls and skill rolls.

Higgs, the Porcs were hidden in the foliage and although you said you were up in the front, you never really left the group to scout ahead. If they were out in the open I would have let you know due to your high vantage point.

Shep and Lark, since you failed the danger sense rolls, you not need to roll for surprise. Also, everyone has three bennies to use as you feel fit to reroll.

Female Pegasus Pony: Wounds 0 | Dts 0 | Ftg 0 | Cha +2 | Pce 6 (+d6) | Prry 5 | Tough 5 | Bs 4

Ahhh, okay. I think I'll reroll, since it's the first encounter and Lark's danger sense is kind of a big deal with her.
1d8 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
1d6 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0
Hehehe. Alright, that's one Benny down.
Notice roll for surprise: 1d8 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + (6) = 12
Okay, so I take the Wild Die roll, and reroll that, right?...1d6 ⇒ 5
For a total of 11?

I ponder what Night and Higgs said. Adjusting my glasses I respond, "I left my comfort zone a long time ago. I was hoping to make new friends. Why in Equestria would I simply stand by and watch them die? Do you not want my friendship?" Pausing for a moment to look in the direction of Shepard and Lark. I adjust my glasses "What's going on over there you two?"

GM Bennies ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

OK, alot of confusion... Lets get that straitened out first

Higgs, I thought you were asking for a "bonus" or an "extra" notice roll because you were flying. You would have gotten a notice roll like everyone else, but not a special one like Lark, Gear and Shep did. I hope that clears everything up. So you would have gotten a notice roll. Your not in a forest, the Porcs were hiding in some light foilage, esentially bushes, so you would still be in sight of the party and within hearing distance. I'll try to be a bit more descriptive with my text.

Due to Sheps's raise on his danger sense roll, he was able to warn everyone of the impending danger, so no one is surprised, so Initiative will go as the normal rules.

Lark, you used a Bennie to reroll danger sense, so it is used up. Nightflight, since surprise was negated by shep, you don't need to make a notice roll vs surprise, so you don't need to spend the Bennie.

Lark and Nightflight, I don't mind using the rolls in the same tabe, but instead of using the "+" and making them add together, seperate them with a ";" and they will roll seperatly under one tag, Like so: 1d1 ⇒ 11d1 ⇒ 1

I will be using Real Cards for the Initiative.

Higgs, I assumed that you were still really close to the group, but if you feel that you are a great deal ahead, then that is fine. Although I think you would be closer, I would say that you are at max, your full flanking space away. You should be able to make one flying or flanking move be within reach of the party.

Female Pegasus Pony: Wounds 0 | Dts 0 | Ftg 0 | Cha +2 | Pce 6 (+d6) | Prry 5 | Tough 5 | Bs 4

Oh, using Danger Sense spends a Bennie? I must've missed that. So I spent a total of 2 Bennies.

K♠ ???
J♠ Lark Lighthead
10♣ Elemental Al
9♦ Higgledy Piggledy
7♠ Nightflight Mintleaf
7♥ Shepard Jeremiah Pie
5♠ Doctor Gearbox
2♣ Porcs

HOW INITIATIVE WORKS
Cards are drawn for each character and the count goes down from highest card 1st. In case of a tie, the cards go in reverse alphabetical order, so Spades then Hearts then Diamonds then Clubs. Jokers are special and I will explain them when one gets drawn. Initiative is redrawn each round. If you know what you want to do, feel free to post out of turn. I will do an end of round summery with everything that happens.

When Shepard mentions the Porcs, you all turn towards the bushes, the only place of hiding in the open area, as the Porcs jump out, their advantage of surprise ruined. It's hard to tell their disappointment, as they oink and grunt in a small little frenzy as they come at the group with their little pointy spears!

Shep and Doc are in the front, only 3 paces away (6 yards) from the porcs. Element and Nightflight are right behind them 4 paces away (8 yards). If Lark is flying, I assume she is just above the group. Higgs would be somewhere between 1 to 10 paces infront/above the Doc and Shep, somewhere between 2 and 20 yards away. Higgs go ahead and stat yourself at whatever distance you want withing that area. It is partly cloudy in the sky.

I will post more info on combat in discussion, there is enough ooc text in the gameboard!

Lark is up first!

GM Bennies ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

Forgot an important thing...

There a three porcs. They look nearly identical wither their beady little eyes and their Boar-like faces. They barely reach a pony's eye level. However, one is chubby and you can see a piece of carrot dangling from his little tusk. One is very short, even for a Porc, a head smaller than the other two. The last one is really skinny and lanky. [ooc]Let me know if your effecting the 'Fat', 'Short', or 'Skinny' Porc. They are grouped right next to each other, nearly having climbed over each other as they jumped out of the bushes.

Okay, so I'm not trying to be the annoying stubborn guy, and maybe I'm just used to PbPs going firmly in order when it comes to Init, but in a combat that may well end up being based on talking, I think it's best if the conversation actually go linearly. That's why I'm complaining here. Not whining, complaining. ^___^

Stallion Unicorn ( Ws 0 | Ds 0 | Fa 0 | Cha 0 | Spd 6 (+d6) | Pry 2 | Tgh 4 | Bs 3)

Sometimes game goes faster when posted this way. Not everyone has time to post in order so as not to slow things down, people gotta post when they can. Me personally I have time to put something in whenever so I'm waiting my turn, but that my not be the case for others. Just trust the DM will resolve everyone's actions in initiative order. Usually DM's request two actions from a player in the event their first choice is no longer possible when their turn comes up and then they resolve everyone's turn at once. Depends on how our DM wants to run things. So relax, just let people post and their business will be resolved in initiative order. I'd rather them post when they can so as not to slow things down.

Female Pegasus Pony: Wounds 0 | Dts 0 | Ftg 0 | Cha +2 | Pce 6 (+d6) | Prry 5 | Tough 5 | Bs 4

I am relaxed. Stop telling me to relax, godd*mmit!
The problem is that if one of these posts contradicts what Lark is saying, it will confuse things. I realize my getting-my-action-first isn't in jeopardy. I'm more concerned about things getting muddled for no good reason. This isn't actually about me, it's about Lark, for instance, trying to Intimidate while the others are trying Diplomacy. That isn't the plan, but things like that look awkward. It makes more sense to me to just handle things in order in such cases. Roleplaying is normally first-come, first-serve, so to speak. When Roleplaying is policed by Initiative, though, things can get more complicated.
This has nothing to do with my wanting to go first and everything to do with the fact that I am going to go first. There's a reason many PbPs enforce a "post in order" policy. Tactics suffer in timey-wimey games.

Male Halfling Cloths Designer

Lark in the time you have been tell us how you like PbP to go,
(remember GM is always good on this matter) you could have posted what you PC,s dos!. I say this becouse I AM waiting to see what you and the others do before me, so stop ya winneying and start a trotting, or Higgs will show up a Dicing and slicing :)

Anyway, I could've done a spoiler "if blank happens", but I chose not to. Just didn't seem necessary, and I prefer to avoid using those unless there's no alternative. I have almost never seen a case where it didn't distort the flow.

Angry. Sorry if my comment on the grammar got your goat, but it's impossible to tell dyslexics from "grammar commies" on the internet, and I am literally unable to read some sentences, so it was an actual request.

I'm not going to post my action because, as stated, my action will depend on what read Lark gets. Lark got a pretty good roll, after all. Not that I'm expecting it, but it's possible Lark will get something specific, like, "the porcs look hungry" or "the porcs look like they're running from something and you're in their way".
If Lark can only tell that the porcs aren't open to talk, her action is simple: inform the others and take to the air.

Lark Lighthead wrote:

Making an intuition roll to size them up and get a feel for them does take up an action. However, you can do more actions at once by taking a -2 to all rolls. Your Intuition roll is so good that the penalty will not effect any info you get. So if you want to do something else on your turn, you can if you wish with the penalty. You can also move your pace and speak as a free action without taking a penalty.

Lark's Intuition:
The Porcs are savage and wild, but they also seem gullible and stupid. It looks like they have just eaten, most likely stolen produce from the farms, and their success has made them full of themselves. Persuading them to not attack would probably be easy. Using grace, taunting, or even using force on them could work too. Intimidating them would be the hardest choice. It is obvious that they are going to attack, talking in a diplomatic manor is not going to happen, but if you focus on them individually with clash of wills actions, you might be able to take away their will to fight, one at a time.
Feel free to share this info to give the party an edge, and if you want you can make your own action on this turn at a -2.

Female Pegasus Pony: Wounds 0 | Dts 0 | Ftg 0 | Cha +2 | Pce 6 (+d6) | Prry 5 | Tough 5 | Bs 4

Higgs, What you are trying to do is a clash of wills intimidate check here, using your bluff to intimidate them. You don't have the intimidate skill and along with the use of stealth on this turn, your rolling the following:

Higg's Intimidate! 1d4 - 4 ⇒ (2) - 4 = -21d6 - 4 ⇒ (3) - 4 = -1
Porc's Strength 1d8 ⇒ 3
The short porc glances towards Higgs hiding spot, but doesn't seem to notice where Higgs is, and seemingly ignores her bluff.

7♠ Nightflight Mintleaf
"We have nothing you want and plenty you don't want, so if you please excuse us, we are busy looking for some bad guys to clap in chains." Nightflight says as she stares down on the short porc authoritatively.

smarts! 1d4 ⇒ 1
The short porc is surprised by what Nightflight has said, and reflexively bows and offers a hoof out to shake... He then realizes what he is doing and runs away in embarrassment, crying! You toasted this one Nightflight!

5♠ Doctor Gearbox
Doc positions himeself between the remaining porc and the unicorns behind him. Looking at the "skinny porc", Doc says, "Good day my fine fellow. You seem to be a well fed friend. You certainly would not want to eat any of us. We would taste terrible, and be far too tough. Might I suggest some fine apples. I believe I saw some in an orchard that we passed along the way."

smarts!1d4 ⇒ 4
The skinny porc seems to seriously consider this for a moment... The Porc is SHAKEN!

2♣ Porcs, 7♥ (Held) Shepard Jeremiah Pie, K♠ (held) ???
Using a Game Master Bennie to remove shaken from the last Porc!

The skinny porc shakes himself out of his thoughts and tries to spear the good Doctor!

Shep's Interrupt action! Agility!1d6 ⇒ 6
???'s Interrupt action! Agility!1d8 ⇒ 2
Porc's Agility! 1d6 ⇒ 1

Shep and the porc seem to move as one! But it is Shep who is Quicker. Trotting between the doc and the porc, Shep pre-counters the porc's attack with a firm buck!

Sheps's Fighting! 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 31d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

And totally whiffs it! Seeing the new threat, the Porc turns the spear towards Shep, but not before...

"Take this you dirty thieves!" Yells a grey pegasus mare with a blond mane as she erupts from a cloudy hiding spot in the sky! She lobs a glass jar filled with a blue substance at the porc, and it hits... Shep right in the face! shattering and covering him in blueberry jelly! Oh No! No damage, no penalty, but it is very sticky and messy...

"...Opps, My Bad!" Apologies the wall eyed mare.

"Squee-he-he" The Porc chortles as it trys to stick Shep!

porc's fighting!1d6 ⇒ 3 Damage 1d8 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (5) = 8

And the last Porc can't seem to focus on fighting, it's laughing so hard!
