Kardas Rasalas |

Kardas breathes out a sigh over the flat of his blade. Apparently, there is magic to the man's breath as the blade is immediately covered by a thin layer of ice. He rushes in and hacks at the closest steam mephit, enraged by the fact that his spell didn't take them all out.

Ishta Khosiv |

Yeah, sorry. Wanted to edit my post to add the following action, but sleep caught me. Let's say Ishta used Touch of Rage (+2 to hit and damage) on 1-Kardas, 2-Zane, 3-See Armithia, 4-Azarra: 1d4 ⇒ 2.

DM Fang Dragon |

Earlier in round 1
Ishta follows suit with Delenn, sending another volley of missiles which blasts it to pieces.
Kardas summons a fraction of his power to enshroud his blade with utter cold! Armed with a weapon inimical to the mephit's nature he rushes in and hacks at the closest steam mephit, ending it!
Looking grimly determined, Delenn repeats her spell, sending a volley of missiles to slam into the mephit at the back.

Azarra is up. OK so your ability is subject to DR (sonic & magic so often bypasses that) but not SR. Got it.

Azarra |

Azarra starts singing, walking into the room so that the people who are actively fighting can see her.
+2 to saving throws against charm and fear effects and +2 on attack and weapon damage rolls

DM Fang Dragon |

Azarra starts belting out and an old battle song, a real rabble rouser that eggs you on!
Mace in hand, Zane waits for one of the Mephits to approach, he was sure he'd make them sorry if they tried!
Bolstered by Azarra's song, Ser Armithia steps in ans swings hard at the closest Mephit, his sword cleaving through it's body and darn near ending it.
The two remaining mephits seem to write and boil before erupting like geysers which splatters almost everyone with boiling rain. As one the Watchers of Dawn are soaked and horribly burned! Looks like they get everyone but Delenn got burned.

Zane Levallis is up.

Zane Levallis |

The priest gritted his teeth against the fiery explosion of two of the creatures, managing to avoid the worst from the one creature just to turn into the full blast of the other. At least that was the end of them. Seeing Kardas rush to confront the thing across the room, Zane stepped up beside the paladin and attempted to finish off the nearest creature.

DM Fang Dragon |

Zane's mace smashes through the wounded Mephit, ending it.
I think I'll call the combat here since the last one is hardly any threat.
Many of the the works in this room are quite valuable, detailing the phenomenon of planar rifts, complex explanations of some of the most common teleportation
errors, and catalogs of the types of creatures one could encounter in nearly any plane beyond the Material Plane. Very useful if you ever need to research anything to do with the planes. The library if kept together counts as a +5 circumstance bonus towards answering any Kn:Planes check after 4 hours of study.
adaptation, and a scroll of teleport.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia takes up guarding the entrance, as the more perceptive ones look around.

Zane Levallis |

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 It was good while it lasted. LOL
Zane looked about the room after the planar beings were sent back to wherever they hailed from, noting that the texts were likely beyond his ken. Quickly overwhelmed by the subject matter, he blankly read over titles but saw little of consequence.

Azarra |

Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Azarra finds a spellbook, and hands it off to Ishta. (See the first spoiler above.)
Is it one perception roll that has two different levels of reveal, or two rolls?

Ishta Khosiv |

Having a quick look at the book, Ishta discovers is the spellbook of an ancient magician, containing some useful spells. "That is quite a treasure. Kardas, you might want to have a look at that too when we have some spare time to study."
Not able to reach Perception 29, so no roll. Kardas, we should decide on the spells together.

Kardas Rasalas |

Perception Kardas: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Perception Familiar: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Kardas and his fox familiar have a moment together when the animal puts his nose up into the air and frantically starts sniffing about. "Hey friend, what's that smell? Ancient Nar-tainted scrolls? Really? Where? show me!" Together, the duo uncovers a hidden folio and from within, Kardas manages to produce a set of seemingly valuable scrolls. "Ishta, you're in luck."
The Magus doesn't get third level spells until level 7 and even then, I can copy what I need and don't have out of your book. For level 1 and 2 spells: (1) Ear-Piercing Scream, (1) Unseen Servant, (1) Keep Watch x2, (1) Ant Haul | (2) Arcane Lock, (2) Resist Energy x2, (2) See Invisibility, (2) Defending Bone.

Delenn Moonbean |

Delenn casts an expert eye over the findings, "Very nice... No dispel scroll though. Perhaps try one of the other sub-libraries? We need to enter them, anyway to manipulate the statues. The chamber of Whispered Secrets and the Chamber of Calling and Binding are unexplored."

Azarra |

Azarra is pleased that the fox found some additional treasure.
Your buddy is quite talented, Kardas.
Which way do you suggest, Delenn?

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia activates the statue at Delenn's instructions.

Zane Levallis |

A glutton for punishment, Zane manipulated the head in the room, pleased to find that it actually worked without lubricant and didn't cause an explosion or anything of the like. The priest is excited for the magical finds, though feels a bit deflated about the lack of the 'dispel' scroll. Hopefully one of the other chambers the elven woman mentioned would contain what they were looking for. Hefting his mace, he prepared to move out once the group got a lead from Delenn.

Ishta Khosiv |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

"Calling and Binding sounds like Outsiders" Ishta thinks out loud. "Shall we try the other one?"

Kardas Rasalas |

The fox darts in between Azarra's feet in reply to her words. Its fur, white as snow, brushes against her ankle, and he barks at the bard - although calling it a bark might be an overstatement. It is barely a yip, if that. All of it makes Kardas grin and he eyes Azarra with obvious amusement in his eyes. "Oh, he likes to be complimented. The problem is, compliments tend to come with tasty treats, which, so I've found out, can create a vicious circle. There's only so much beef jerky I can carry with me."
""
Technically, you can still fill in the four level 3 scrolls, Ishta. How about: (3) Dispel Magic, (3) Magic Circle Against Evil, (3) Resist Energy Communal, (3) Displacement ... ?

Delenn Moonbean |

Delenn shrugs, "I'm sure you're right Ishta although we have to go in there eventually. Still lets try this Chamber of Whispered Secrets. Not sure I like the sound of that by the way, it feels ominous".
She steps across the hallway and tried the door. Sounding surprised she remarked, "Oh it's unlocked..." Inside the shelves in this hold thousands of handwritten journals and bound books large and small. Delenn explains, "I've never been in here before but this collections contains countless hours of automatic writing as well as transcripts of trances and drug-induced ecstasies. The writings cover thousands of subjects, and while some passages and pages are supposed to make sense, most of it is useless garbage. Many of the librarians believed this collection was worthless, but they still got requests from those who wished to decipher the stream-of-consciousness writing contained within, claiming that secrets to the universe hide within these pages, so the librarians kept the materials around."
A single chest sits on the floor between two of the shelves. It is locked and bears the image of a strange stylized eye. In one corner is another angelic statue.
Map updated.

Zane Levallis |

Zane's eyes widened slightly in alarm as the elven woman boldly strode to the indicated door and opened it, then relaxed as nothing terrible seemed to happen. Filing into the room with any of the others who enter, he eyed the chest curiously, the strange writings in the room holding little of his attention.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
As Azarra and the others were more sharp-eyed than he had been lately, the priest instead went to the angel and again pressed his luck in attempting to adjust it without aid. The young man sighed in relief as the piece slid into place without an issue, offering none of the protests of the floor above.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia stands in the door, scanning the room.

Azarra |

Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
Azarra says
That eye is super creepy.
She checks the chest for traps:
Perception (traps): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
If there are no traps, she starts using her longsword to try to gouge out/deface the eye on the chest.

Kardas Rasalas |

Perception Kardas: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Perception Familiar: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
Kardas instinctively reaches out with a hand to warn Azarra, but, as usual, she's already one step ahead of him. "Be careful with that chest. There's something to it that isn't right, according to my friend's nose. He says he smells thunder, whatever that means."

DM Fang Dragon |

The disable device check is DC 25. Are you going to try and open it?

Azarra |

Um, yeah, I guess... after I get rid of the eye that was creeping me out. :) Sorry. I thought there was some other story thing first, since you said it made me uncomfortable.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

DM Fang Dragon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Oh! You actually opened it. Insert evil GM laughter!
The chest had a cunningly hidden rune near the keyway. This was designed to discharge a very powerful stroke of captured lightning should the lock be tampered with in any way. Azarra rather deftly manages to erase the edge of the rune with a sharp tool before using a thin glass rod to tap it. Her first action managed to modify the traps just enough so that it's energy was released much slower than in tended, and her second action set it off intentionally. For a good thirty heart beats or so powerful electrical arcs radiate out from the chest filling the air with the smell of ozone.
After it stops and had a chance to cool down it was a simple matter to pick the lock and open the chest to reveal various strange things: A scrap of vellum with the phrase: "Glory to the All-Seeing Eye!"; a pair of scrolls stored within a leather and-scrimshaw bodkin case (one of suffocation, the other dispel magic); a jade, gold and obsidian corkscrew in the form of a hand (appraise DC 18: this is worth 300 gp); and what appears to be some sort of bizarre desiccated eye the size of your fist on a chitinous stalk.

Ishta Khosiv |

"Disgusting" Ishta comments at the sight of the eye. "At least we got what we needed."

Kardas Rasalas |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Kardas' eyes grow big at the sight of the eye and you could swear you can hear how his mouth starts to water. "Oh my, I hope you don't mind if I take the eye? If it is what I think it is, my tribe will be ever so jealous when they hear I ate it!"
Evil eye-scream is delish!

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia stands watch in the doorway. The Paladin is looking out into the hall.

Zane Levallis |

The cleric watched, nerves taut, as Azarra ever-so-carefully discharged the trap, smelling the air. Kardas' cunning friend had been right to smell thunder, it seemed. A decent pace away, the priest couldn't see the contents of the chest until the half-elf started to take them out, his eyes lighting up as someone mentioned the scroll of dispelling was one of the found items.
His brow furrowed as the Rashemi man covetously mentioned eating the eye, the confused Zane stepped forward, his mouth curling in disgust at the huge, wretched orb inside. Still, he didn't want to upset the man...he had been a most worthy companion. "Maybe we should lock it back inside?" It was more a question than a statement, his eyebrows lifting up as he glanced at the three ladies and Kardas as Ser Armithia was a steadfast sentinel in the doorway.

Azarra |

I was surprised too, believe me. :)
Listening to Zane, Azarra says,
Um, locking it back up is too kind. I am more in favor of burning it or chopping it into little tiny bits. I can't even tell you how much it creeps me out.
...Um, after that Kardas can eat it if he wants to...
Azarra is serious about destroying it, so if no one stops her or does it for her, she will pull out her longsword and start hacking at it. Let me know if you need rolls or if this is just a story thing.

DM Fang Dragon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Just a story thing, apart from that will save I need. I kid, I kid...

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Did it radiate Evil?

Zane Levallis |

Zane listened to Azarra's reasoning, the lovely half-elf making a lot of sense. Perhaps it was just some wretched, forgotten token that was no threat...but best to not take chances. As for Kardas consuming it...ye gods...the priest thought about warning the Rashemi man of the dangers of eating something that had likely been sitting here for fifty years or longer, but judging by the look in the man's eyes, it might just make it more enticing. So instead, the priest hefted his mace as Azarra took her sword to the obscene eye, ready to defend his allies should it...do something.

Ishta Khosiv |

Ishta is not hundred percent sure destroying the eye is the best course of action, but neither leaving it be is anyway, so she decides not to intervene. Kardas might want to do something she would never do, but who's she to judge? After all, most of her Thayan traditions would be frown at by her current friends.
"Mmmh... Whatever you do, be very careful."

Kardas Rasalas |

Kardas frowns for a second but then gives in to the plight of his companions. "Alright, alright. I thought it might be an eyestalk from one of those fabled beholders, but maybe it isn't, and maybe it is much worse. We can put it back and study it later, if you so desire."

Azarra |

We aren't putting it back. We are...
She swings at the thing again
...chopping it into tiny little pieces.
And she continues to chop until it is unrecognizable mush.

Kardas Rasalas |

Kardas gasps and looks at Azarra as if she just drowned a puppy right in front of him. His lips smack together and he wildly gesticulates, but nothing that can be called a word comes out of the man's mouth. Nothing but disappointment.

DM Fang Dragon |

The eyestalk crumbles easily under Azarra's boot.

Azarra |

After chopping the eye to bits and grinding it under her boot, Azarra sees Kardas staring at her in disappointment.
Listen Kardas, the thing was creeping me out, and I think it even winked at me. It was evil and needed to die, okay? Scrape it up and slurp it down if you're hungry. I can clean the dirt off with a spell if you seriously want to.

Zane Levallis |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Zane looked on uncomfortably as Azarra hacked and stomped at the eyestalk with vigor, wondering what had caused her to want to destroy it with such immediacy. As she spoke to Kardas, the priest grew even more concerned about the implications of the eye possibly winking at her, though he had to stop himself from retching as she then mentioned eating the remains off the floor.
The group had collected the scroll of dispelling magic, it seemed, so perhaps they could continue on to try to finish the assignment here. In truth, after the previous victories the companions had collected in their weeks in Phlan, the cleric was pleased that when the going had gotten tougher the group had gotten tougher along with it. "Where to now, folks?"

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Knowledge (religion) (Int): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Ser Armithia places a reassuring gauntlet on Kardas' shoulder.
If it makes you feel any better, it was evil.

Kardas Rasalas |

Kardas' lips thin into something that might be described as a cold smile when Armithia tries to comfort him. "My stomach has overcome greater evils, but I thank you nonetheless for your concern. Alas, Eye see no reason to continue this discussion for what's done is done. Let's move on so we can return to the surface? I yearn to see the blue sky."
