When you are ready, you can make your first round of three social checks for day 1.
On this first day, Taldor celebrates the naming of its next grand prince and approaching coronation with festivals and military parades, filling the streets with colorful dancers and peddlers. The hustle and bustle on the streets makes it possible to roam the streets relatively unnoticed, eliminating the normal additional agent loss that accompanies the PCs’ physical presence in Oppara. The free-flowing wine helps loosen lips, granting a +2 circumstance bonus on discovery checks.

Because of the rules for this specific segment, you automatically start taking Charisma damage as soon as you have no agents left. Since I have no agents, I automatically start taking Charisma damage, which can only be mitigated by fleeing, which in turn causes you to lose all accumulated successes. Thus I am incapable of assisting in this phase.

Brainiac listed them under campaign info - it depends on the group you're investigating.
I think the system is a nice idea but it relies on too much min-maxing. Mel has made use of it because she had crazy bluff from the beginning and could get regular level ups. My other WotC has fluffed his first 2 checks already and I don't know if he'll ever recover from it... And the later books assume that you have a lot to work with...
I like it for the flavor and the options it adds, but some of its just too hard.

Having flubbed the entire first sequence with this character whom I built to have social strengths, I feel you there.
If the system is supposed to be critical for engaging parts of the story, then there needs to be a mechanism by which characters who are supposed to excel at it can do so. And it raises the question of what would happen with a group that didn't have a bunch of social powerhouses - if your team had only one social-strong character, or none at all, do you just lose the war because you can't engage the subsystem?

Having read the AP you don't lose exactly but this bit of the so would be hard. I think the Gm would just have to skip it entirely and go straight into "infiltrate the palace" mode.
That said thus was called out at the start as a 'social skills' AP so you'd like to think people would be ready for that...

There is an option for this section without agents: “If you aren’t using the optional Agents of Change subsystem, each PC instead begins with a pool of Loyalty points equal to 40 + her Charisma score. Lost agents instead reduce the PC’s Loyalty Points, with the same consequences when the pool is reduced to 0.”
Let’s use that instead.

Tactis: with the public and the palace servants we've got the two most important groups I think. We should keep working on the Arcanist so that they [hopefully] tell us about the palace defneses etc and the Royal Guard. I think we spend anpther day or so on them (which should be abput 5 days out of 8).
Then we can tackle the ulfen guard and the other I vestogators if we really want/need to, but if we get the physical guards and the magical ones then I think we can deal with the ulfen. I'm not worried about the other informers at this poi t, the loyalty damage is negligible now so they aren't a threat.
