Kip Rapier, Aid Simon: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

Ema fires an acid splash that sails past the skum as the rest of you ready your weapons. As the creature clears the doorway, Victrix drives her spear into its gut. Kip distracts the creature enough that Simon can score a good hit as well, leaving it critically injured. Still standing, the monster stabs its trident at Victrix, wounding the aasimar as its tines sink deep into her chest.

Victrix takes the hit and strikes back. "IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?"

Power Stab: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Damage?: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

Apparently, that is all the skum's got. Victrix stabs the monster through the neck, the point of her spear exploding out the other side. It falls lifelessly to the floor.

When you get a chance to search the room, you don't find much of value. However, among the quartz shards on the bench, you find a dull gray stone that glows with a continual flame.

This is an ioun torch. These skum have mundane tridents.

After a moment of observation, Simon realizes that the flame around the stone isn't burning anything.

Picking it up, he tosses it into the air and it starts spinning around his head.

"Neat! I think this was meant for you, Ema."

He grabs the stone out of the air and tosses it to Ema.

One more door to check out. Kip should heal up Victrix before we do so.

The dark chamber beyond the door is featureless except for a large ring of an unusual-looking metal embedded in the floor. Studying it for a short time, Ema determines that anything within the circle will be subjected to a detect magic effect, but the results of this effect are visible in the form of colored auras of differing intensities.

If a creature focuses its attention on a subject for multiple rounds, the information received becomes clearer, as if the observer had studied the creature or object with detect magic for multiple rounds. No concentration is required to maintain this effect, and the observer is able to cast other spells while continuing to observe. Not every creature is able to understand the information it’s seeing through this effect. Creatures unable to cast detect magic require 3 ranks in Spellcraft to properly interpret the auras they're seeing.

Simon will take out the magical soap that we found and place it in the circle.

OK, looks like everyone is content to go downstairs.

"Let's hope we find more evidence of the previous settlers downstairs."

Simon will lead the way to the stairs going into the tower, check for traps (T10 for 24), and proceed down.

It's a ramp, actually, and it goes up, not down. :)

Simon does not find any traps on the ramp. The ramp winds up to the next floor. Much of this level is a room that wraps around the tower. Another ramp on the south wall ascends to the floor above. Against a wall to the southwest is a table suitable for quiet study. The western side of this area sports half a dozen bookshelves covered in the dust of deteriorating paper and leather. Opposite the shelves is a small stone plinth holding a clockwork bust of a nondescript woman. A large table surrounded by a few stools occupies the eastern side of the room.

A single skum stands among the shelves, examining some of the surviving tomes. When it sees you, though, it hefts its glaive and moves in on you menacingly!

I'll mark down the pearl in my inventory. Ema, can arcanists use it? I can't remember since you do prepare spells, but then you have spells/day. Anyways, shamans can use it, but only for my normally prepared spells. My spirit magic spells are spontaneous, so they can't use the pearls.

The skum steps back to avoid Simon's whip, then retaliates by biting and clawing the investigator, leaving him critically wounded! Only the half-orc's ferocity keeps him on his feet. Ema quickly focused and reopened the portal below her elemental. The air one might behave itself, the earth one she could reason with, but fire was too volatile and she wasn't about to let it hang around until she could communicate with it to try and reign it's impulses in.

Victrix stabs the skum one more time, her spear coated with the creature's blood. It coughs and staggers, struggling to stay on its feet.

The fire elemental lashes out again, the skum's slimy skin cracking and burning at its touch. At last, the fishy creature falls, bleeding and smoldering. Ema quickly banishes the elemental back to its home as Kip and Simon tend to the half-orc's wounds.

The skum has a potion of cure moderate wounds, a magic glaive, and a ring of five keys.

Once you have a chance to look around more, you can see a brass plaque next to the door in this room. In Azlanti, it reads "Lower Level Tank and Observation Deck." An elaborate lock is set in the door, but the key is in the lock and turned to disable the mechanism.

Examination of the library stacks may be disappointing for seekers of ancient secrets and lore, as nearly all of the books have disintegrated with time. However, two books made of engraved metal plates survive, as well as three others that appear to be standard paper and ink. These "normal" books radiate a faint necromancy aura. A sixth surviving book appears to be a spellbook.

The only item on the desk that has survived the passage of time is a blue gemstone--another recording gem. The plinth holds a strange clockwork bust of a woman. A small slot is built into the forehead of the bust the same size and shape of the gemstone. This appears to be another device for playing back the gems.

He sets the books aside for now. "These can wait till we are sure the structure is empty"

He pockets the keys and sets the glaive a bit nearer to Ema, to see if it is a stronger enchantment than Victrix's current spear.

Then, while Kip starts healing the party, he puts the recording gem into the head, wondering why this one has a different playback device than the gem upstairs.

A voice begins to speak in the Azlanti tongue. The bust's mechanical mouth moves along with the words. "This recording gem and the information it contains is for the organization's internal use only and not for dissemination to the public, under penalty of law.

"What follows is sensitive information about the Spindle Solution. As far as the public knows, we are dedicated to improving humanity's quality of life through the use of ioun stone technology. We create and specialize in the spindle series of stones, while also performing humanitarian research here at Spindlelock Tower and other stations throughout Azlant.

"This is just our public face, though. In truth, we are a division of the Ioun Imperative that serves as the empire's intelligence organization. Behind the facade, we perform classified military and intelligence research and development.

"Recently, our group captured a spy. Originally suspected to be an elf from Celwynvian disguised as a human, the spy proved to be tenacious, resourceful, and dangerous. Once captured, the spy was placed in temporal stasis, and since the organization's leadership was unwilling to house the prisoner at our headquarters, the Compass, this facility was renovated in secret to contain the individual. Most of the other researchers here are unaware of this development.

"The Spindle Solution leadership has recently determined that the Empire of Azlant has been manipulated by a hitherto unknown aquatic race. Some speculate that the spy might be related to these creatures, so a second series of renovations were performed on Spindlelock Tower to accommodate the spy's release from stasis and eventual interrogation. At this time, the general public is unaware of this aquatic threat. We intend to keep it that way. We do not want to cause a panic. We will record another gem once the interrogation is complete."

The bust's mouth stops moving as the recording ends.

Simon translates as fast as he can, then stops to really listen to the words as he replays them in his mind.

"An elf spy... held in stasis... possibly an agent of an aquatic race.

Ladies and gentlemen, we just stepped out of a history book and into the pages of a novel. Does anyone truly believe that the Pathfinders found no clue of this in their previous explorations?"

Simon hurriedly writes down some notes and pockets the recording gem.

It was relief that Ema was able to dismiss the elemental and even greater relief when she saw Simon was going to be alright. She went to search the skum's body and cast her normal spell so she could check the items on it for magic. She looked up at the group and said, "This is a potion of cure moderate wounds, I've seen enough of them to recognize it. This glaive is magical as well."

When they found the Library Ema was overwhelmed with excitement. It was a shame so many of the books were ruined with time and she looked at the remaining ones with interest. She stopped her perusal when the recording played and unlike previous times didn't do into a trance. the mention of an "aquatic threat" however caught her attention. It seemed that the mention should mean...something to her but what it was she couldn't understand.

She turned her gaze back to the books and said, "That was an interesting recording. I wonder if the so called elf it mentions is still in here somewhere?" She studied each of the books radiating necromancy carefully under magically augmented vision and then turned her focus to the spell book to see what it might contain.

Spellcraft Necro Book 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

The glaive is a +1 seaborne glaive. The books are treated with unguent of timelessness to preserve them, which is why they radiate necromantic auras--they are not inherently magical. The books primarily contain research into constructing new ioun stones and different ways to incorporate them into items, though it will take some time to look through them all. I'll determine what spells are in the spellbook and post them in the discussion thread.

"He could still be alive, I guess.

The voice said he was in stasis. If they never got a chance to perform the interrogation, he might still be waiting.

These Skum could be the aquatic race they were referring to, though they don't seem to like working with anyone or have the needed subtlety to resort to spying or hidden influence.

Let's check out the observation room to see if he is still there."

You open the double doors on this level. This enclosed area is an octagonal walkway illuminated by a soft, pervasive light. The overwhelmingly dominant feature is another chamber inside this area, which has transparent walls and appears to be filled with gently bubbling water. This cistern or tank appears to extend up into the next floor, although there is a stone ceiling 15 feet above this external walkway. On the east side of the tank is a transparent door, complete with an opaque handle.

The tank's walls and door radiate auras of moderate abjuration when examined with detect magic. You can see a vaguely humanoid shape seemingly composed of water floating near the bottom of the tank. It appears to be a water elemental.

Ema shook her head and said, "No, they meant, I think, an aboleth. I didn't know they were connected to the fall of Azlant, or at least I don't think I knew. I don't know much about them but I do recall they are an ancient aquatic race of fishlike creatures and are very evil." She looked into the tank in curiosity, "This looks like a water elemental of some kind but I don't recall one ever being human shaped..." She looked uneasy as she continued, "Maybe we can find something in here that will give us more information, or we could just open it and see."

The berserker waves off the healing potion Simon tries to give her. "You need it more than I do. I can take the hits."

Victrix looks over the glaive the party took. "Huh... you're telling me this thing cuts through water as well as people?"

She looks between the glaive and her spear. "So... does anyone want my spear? Can anyone else use it?"

I was going to make some kind of glib remark about fairy tales, but that roll...

Simon looks into Ema's eyes and sees that she is quite serious. "Aboleth? They would fit the description, certainly, and would have the subtlety and power to control an entire civilization without anyone suspecting.

I have read extensively of some of the excursions to Voshgurvaghol, and the picture that has been reported depicts a truly terrifying picture."

Simon considers the issue for a moment. "What makes you suspect the Aboleth?"

-----------------------

In response to Victrix's offer of the spear, Simon responds, "I can use one, but I prefer the sword. Maybe you should keep it as a ranged weapon. If we get to an underwater environment where I need a piercing weapon, I'll take it then."

I'll wait a bit to see if Kip is able to post today before continuing into the observation room

For healing, I think 2 zaps for me gets me close and 2 zaps for Victrix will take her to full. Sound good?

Ema's expression shifted and she seemed confused as she said, "I...I don't know. These skum just don't seem like they could be that big of a threat, at least not on their own, and certainly not against an empire like Azlant seems to have been." She looked up at Simon, "But aboleth are another matter, and from what you said about them I think they could have been the kind of threat would threaten the Aslanti people. Short of maybe the elves of the time, or the dwarves, I don't know who else could be."

OK, let's take the 4 CLW zaps and Victrix and Simon each get 11 HP We'll just need to make sure Kip deducts the charges.

"This tank is extremely odd. Perhaps that shape is the elf and the elemental is keeping him in stasis? Will opening the door release the elemental back to the plane of water or free it to attack us?

One thing is for sure. If that is the elf in there, he is going to be quite disoriented after being in stasis for 4,000 years. Be prepared for anything, but let's try not to attack him.

It's hard to know what he will think of us...."

Simon will head over to the door and examine it for traps. If there are no traps, he will try the handle. If it is locked, he will try the keys in his pocket first, then grab the key out of the observation room door second, before resorting to an attempted lockpick.

Disable Rolls:
Disable 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Disable 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Disable 3: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Simon does not find any traps. The door is not locked. When the door is pulled open, the water doesn't pour out but instead remains within the doorframe as a wall of water held back by a permeable barrier. It would be a simple matter to simply step in and out of the water.

The water is surprisingly tepid and clear. Several pipes and hoses are at the bottom of the tank, their purpose unclear. The elemental turns to look at Simon, but takes no other actions.

I wonder if it can hear through the water?

In Aquan: "What is your purpose here?"

The elemental does not respond to Simon's question. It continues to stare at him impassively.
