"There you go, DAY-LIX-EE-AH, that should do it. Now, as to how to get through the portcullis, maybe you and Kisasi can lift it? Or smash through it? You seem to be one that favors violence over creative thought. I'm surprised you haven't already tried hitting it with something."
Seeing the angry glint in the inquisitor's eyes, Thistle shrank back. "Not with me, though, certainly!"
"It seems that barring a blacksmith or engineer in our company, that we are at an impasse. Still, with the Splatterman's ghost gone, our work here is likely done. Shall we return to Lily's place and tell her what we have done?"
I've lost track of what we have done and were trying to do. Did we complete the quests here?
Big Joe |
You still have one significant prisoner to face. That prisoner waits in the lone unexplored cellblock. Once the five most significant prisoners have been dealt with you need to return to the ghost of the Warden's wife and present her with a symbol of her husband's office (You have his badge of office) as requested.
Seeing that the winch controls are inoperable and would require some time to repair you decide to turn your attention to the North and explore the the remaining underground cell block, “The Oubliette.”
You advance up the hallway you find the portcullis leading into this cell block is raised which would allow you easy entry. However you also take note of light moving within the guard room.
What do you want to do?

Thistle Winton |
Thistle moves up behind the others, ready to either leap into action of offer much-needed advice at the drop of a hat. Or a feather. Or anything. A dust mote? Surely someone needs his advice about something. The very act of maintaining stealth was bringing to his mind a treatise he read by Robelege about the ability of the Jardenian Throgwabbit to sneak up on its natural prey completely out in the open, using nothing but their pheremones and some light interpretive dance to sway their meal into a drowsy state before they pounce. Of course, the Jardenian Throgwabbit's natural prey was a specific type of semi-aware gourd, but the principle was still sound, wasn't it? He moves his hands slightly in a tentative swaying motion.
Smaranda Zografu |
Smaranda advances cautiously, trying to discern what lies ahead. The gnarf's handwaving is distracting and she frowns at him.

The door to this guard room hangs slightly ajar. Within stands a table surrounded by a few rickety chairs, along with a pair of moldy but serviceable cots.
Inside this guard room a terrible sight to behold awaits you all. This skeleton stands in a battle-ready pose, a handaxe held high, as the skeleton bursts into red-orange flame. It hunts the living, burning with an unending fire. It turns almost as if it senses someone entering the room as Kisasi slips inside but it does not advance on him.

Whirling the sling over his head, he let fly...and was as surprised as anyone else that the stone flew true!

Barely avoiding the fire damage Delixia breathes out a sigh of relief. "Nice work Mihaela!"
Smaranda Zografu |
I just noticed that Smaranda's attacks had Power Attack applied twice by accident, so please take out that +4 bonus from damage for every attack that hit (and her to hit is +11, not +9, although I expect all those attacks will land anyway). I had saved the HeroLab profile by accident with Power Attack enabled.
Big Joe |
Smarand lands her blows with power behind each strike and hears multiple snaps as bones break with each strike. Her nerve endings shierk their messages of pain in her mind as the skeletons flames singe and burn her flesh.
Smaranda Damage (fire): 2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6
As the burning headless skeleton begins to topple the flames grow and leap out at everyone nearby. Suddenly the entire area immediately surrounding the skeleton is very briefly engulfed in flames.
Fiery Death: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 (Smaranda, Delixia, and Mihaela make a DC 13 Reflex Save for half damage.)
Unfortunately for you all the skeleton exploding seems to have drawn forth something much more formidable and fearsome. The Lopper is swift to react to your approach, rising up from his oubliette with a soul-chilling shriek. Although incorporeal, the Lopper appears similar to the way he did in life, save that his arms are unusually elongated. (See slide 5 for a picture of the Lopper.)

Mihaela Vaduva |
Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Mihaela turns her body just in time as the flames engulf them! She opens her eyes and sees the Lopper bearing down on Kisasi! Mentally shrugging the sight of it off, she looks to Smaranda and asks a question then turns her head towards Kisasi.
"Special magic? Is it undead? Kisasi! Look out! he seems to be favoring his left side and the chain may be impeding his movement! Delixia, you may be able to take advantage of his slow swings!"
Combat Advice: Delixia & Kisasi -> Lopper (+2 competence bonus to next attack roll)
Kisasi |
Kisasi recovers quickly from the sight of the new foe, recognizing the man from the literature he studied, but not very clear on the nature of his undeath. Still, undead is undead, and so Kisasi casts a spell to disrupt it. Despite the help from Mihaela, though, he just is not having a good day.

Thistle's head was pained as the creature's presence screamed into his mind. Still, he knew that he must act and quickly. There was only one thing to do. He channeled Desna's life energy into the room, deliberately shrouding Kisasi and Smaranda, and praying that the Lady Most Fair would slap down the apparition.

Smaranda Zografu |
Smaranda has no way at the moment of affecting an incorporeal creature, so she's holding, unless Delixia has another Touch of the Spirit World available.
Smaranda Zografu |

Slightly confused by Kisasi's remark, but feeling empowered by Delixia's magic, Smaranda leaps at the spectral figure, battering it with her fists and feet.

Delixia used the last of her allotment of Spirit Touch on Smaranda and needs to find another way to strike this creature. She calls upon Pharasma to bathe her mornginstar in flames by holding it aloft and shouting out a brief call in the God's name. Using Flames of the Faithful.
Pointing her flaming morningstar towards the Lopper, she issues a judgment of justice against it and moves into flanking position with Smaranda.
Ok I just looked at the picture of the Lopper ... He looks WAY to happy to be here.
The spell functions only for weapons that you wield. If the weapon leaves your hand for any reason, the spell effect ends. The effects of this spell do not stack with any existing flaming or flaming burst weapon property that the target weapon may already possess.
Flaming: Upon command, a flaming weapon is sheathed in fire that deals an extra 1d6 points of fire damage on a successful hit. The fire does not harm the wielder. The effect remains until another command is given.
Mihaela Vaduva |

COMBAT OVER!
Searching the cellblock you find The Lopper’s remains lie in a heap at the bottom of the oubliette, along with about 30 feet of old rope. In addition, a fair amount of gear and other treasures looted from murdered guards or stolen from guard rooms lies among the Lopper’s bones and Gurtis Vortch’s (the former captain of the guard) decapitated skull. These objects consist of 120 gp, a broken masterwork heavy crossbow, a masterwork longsword, a +1 heavy mace, a stone of alarm, and a ring of keys. These once belonged to Gurtis Vortch, and can be used to unlock any of the doors or cells in the dungeon.
All found items have been added to the Loot Tracker at the top of the page. The coinage has been divided evenly among you all.
Reminder: Once you all have defeated all five of the strongest prisoners you are to bring Vesorianna a symbol of her husband's office. His badge of office would work best. She will be able to banish the haunts from Harrowstone entirely. Doing so will release her from this world as well, and will effectively end the haunting of Harrowstone for good.
What do you wish to do now?
Also as a second reminder, you are obligated to remain in Ravengo for a total of 1 month to help see to the professor's daughter Kendra.

is the rope usable?
Smaranda Zografu |
Smaranda thinks for a while, trying to remember the layout of the prison. It felt that they had been here for weeks instead of merely days, and she struggles to recall things clearly. Still...
"Door at the top of the ladder. Upstairs." She motions with a finger pointed upwards, twice, to indicate the top floor.
There was also the locked portcullis, but I don't know if keys would help there. Anyone else remember any locked doors we didn't manage to open?
In response to Mihaela's second question, Smaranda produces the slightly rusty badge of office she had found in the Warden's tortured body.
I only counted 4 bosses killed, and I lost track of which parts we did not explore yet.
Kisasi |
Using the other rope, Kisasi climbs down and starts retrieving the items, as they seem quite useful. He is even thinking about getting the broken crossbow repaired, although he is clearly carrying more than anyone should.
I will hold onto the +1 bolt and +1 mace if no one else is planning to make use of them for now.
"I think we have what we need to return to Vesorianna. Why don't we do that first, in case she can help take any other residual haunts with her? Then we can try that ladder door again."
Assuming no objection, Kisasi leads the way back to her and presents the badge.
Delixia Valane |
I'm sure that ladder is important.
I'm fine with that Kisasi.
Delixia grimaces at the thought of returning to the ladder. "Yes, I agree. We will return to finish what we've started."
She joins the group as they all return once more.
Kisasi |
As they approach the spirit, Kisasi holds out the badge. "We have destroyed the worst of the worst, in this place, but I fear we are unable to completely cleanse the place ourselves."
Big Joe |
Vesorianna Hawkran appears before you all. She looks at you expectantly and you see her smile as she is told that the worst of the prisoner's within Harrowstone have been defeated.
"Thank you one and all. Your bravery and conviction have brought what was once out of control back from the brink of breaking free into the world at large." She gently lifts the slightly deformed golden badge from you outstretched hand. As she does so you can see tears stream down her face. The physical badge falls gently from her hands leaving behind an ethereal version which she pins on left breast of her dress.
Vesorianna uses her newfound symbolic authority to actually cleanse the ruin entirely, stripping it of both haunts and the five key spirits. As she does so, she sighs in thanks as she fades away as well, the warden’s badge settling softly to the ground as she vanishes. The badge continues to glow softly from then on.
The golden badge of former Harrowstone Warden, Lyran Hawkran. It glows with a soft, golden light when used.

Thistle sighed in pleasure as he watched the spirit of Vesorianna Hawkran disappear. It was a blessing to get to see a trapped spirit move on to the freedom of the afterlife to which they are called.
