Random Encounter Chart

This is a rather simple encounter chart I made some time ago. Since the message board doesn't convey charts very well, it can be found here via this finely crafted link

Not every monster is appearing on it and nor was it my intention; extensive encounter charts are a chore to roll on when you do it periodically and tend to produce incoherent results (if the chart is generic AND extensive) or the charts tend to be spread over many sources (when they are specialized around a specific locale).

I also use the d66 because I like the range of results it produces (more than a d20, not as much as a d100). It restricts the number of categories and the number of elements in each category and makes it nice, coherent and concise. I also find that 1 out of 6, or 16.666%, is a good number to work with. 10% is somewhat too low to predict, while 25% is too predictable; 1 chance out of 6 is just perfect!

When I designed the chart, I made sure that the encounter would be usable for a wide range of levels. That’s why the chart often offers two entries and doesn’t specify the number of individuals. Some encounters are not meant to be defeated (like the Legendary Dragon) while other are not meant to be fought (like Friendly Encounter). This chart assumes that sometimes, PC screw-up (such as Spoiled Supplies), are required to use a skill (Lost in the Wilderness) or that s~!~ simply happens (Bad Weather). Finally, when one crosses troll country, one should expect to meet trolls. Therefore, whenever a 6 is rolled for the ‘units’, whatever critter the locale is known to produce shows-up for dinner.

The chart was created for a sand-box campaign where random encounters took a significant role in the game. Traveling was a dangerous affair, especially if one leaves the road and takes shortcuts through the wilderness...

I used the chart for about three years, yet I'm sure it could be polished-up and updated for Pathfinder. As usual, all comments and suggestions are welcome.

I like this. I don't know if I'll use it, but it looks well laid out. If I'm stuck somewhere without an encounter chart of my own design I'll probably use yours.

I believe a d66 would be rolling two six-sided dice of different colors, reading one as the tens and one as the ones.

This provides 36 different possible results with the minimum value of 11 and maximum of 66, but not all numbers in between are possible.
