NVM. You're lucky I had him 5 ft. step back last turn instead of rocking his +17 Concentration to instapass that Casting Defensively check, which I probably should have done, actually. Ah well, no huge difference either way. You would have taken a bit of extra damage is all.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" the Splatterman cries as he's ripped apart by his now uncontrolled magical energies. After a brief time, he completely dissipates, leaving only a faint silver residue on the floor. The entire prison feels much less oppressive now, but still haunted.

You need to return the Warden's badge to Vesorianna. But first! Treasure. Oh, and don't forget that you have the key to that safe in the Warden's Office now.


Inside the Splatterman's Oubliette, Ezekiel spots several shiny objects.

Assuming he dives down to get them before dragging his comrades out:

When the Badge is returned to Vesorianna, she breathes a sigh of relief.

"You've succeeded. Thank you." she says simply. The badge begins spinning in the air between her fingers, and emits a blue glow, simultaneously eerie, and somehow calming. The light slowly fills the room, before more rapidly expanding to encompass the whole prison in a dome of soft blue light.

It fades a moment later, and both Vesorianna and the oppressive presence of the Haunts have vanished completely.

Everyone hits level 4.

So it's come to my attention that Steef actually miscalcualated his damage by quite a bit. The Splatterman should have had 2 HP left after the book ripping. Just for giggles, here's the damage from his next Magic Missile.

6d4 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 4, 4, 3) + 6 = 24

So Zeke's got 2 HP left, and the Splatterman retreats inside of a wall with his Move action, and pops out somewhere else next turn with his last Maximized Magic Missile, doing 20 damage and killing Zeke.

But I see no reason to retcon this after we've already moved on.

Don't waste the potions after combat is over, Azrin healed you and there's no more encounters. If that's to represent how you would have survived though, in a war of attrition, he wins. He's got more Magic Missiles that out damage your healing, plus Summons (which he never got a chance to use), and Corrupting Touch. You alone were pretty boned once the pages were gone.

The badge is a Lesser Ectoplasmic Spell metamagic rod.

3 times per day it lets your spell affect an incorporeal undead 100% of the time (instead of having a 50/50 shot of the spell failing).

I'll take that as a Kn. Local check. DC is less than 10 so even if you're not trained you make it. Duergar are usually evil, deep underground (Darklands/Underdark) Dwarves. Dwarves and Duergar have been at war since as long as either race can remember, and have a deep hatred of each other. It's rare to see one on the surface, however. As a note: while usually cruel and violent, Duergar are also well known for their honorable nature.
