Dungeon AP for 4th ed

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Maybe its already old for you, but I saw that WotC announces an Adventure Path for levels 1 through 30 in Dungeon (with 18 adventures). At least they are starting to do something right, from a business point of view (as early adventures will still be free, but later ones not any more), if they now started to do good adventures...
Although they should put a "To the Honor of Paizo Publishing" in the front of each module, as the AP, in the end, is an invention by them ;-)

Well, actually, WotC was the first company to use the phrase Adventure Path with "Forge of Fury" (and the others).

Also, the first time Dungeon ever did a string of adventures together was under the helm of Chris Perkins -- the Mere of Dead Men series, Dungeon 69-73. Chris Perkins is, unfortunately, consumed by The Dark Side of WotC.

Also, the first Dungeon Adventure Path began under the helm of Chris Youngs -- the SCAP. It gets dynamic here because Youngs has succumbed, to my utter despair, to The Dark Side, yet Dungeon 97-116 were under Paizo. So this one's kinda half-N-half but still, WotC has the bigger half.

However, one could say that anytime WotC puts out any good gaming material, they should pay tribute to Paizo since for a long, long (extra long) time now the only good product WotC has produced has been done by Paizo: the mags, EtCG, & FCI (WotC's FCII and FRCS are the only exceptions).

I really like all of the Eberron stuff that came out during 3.5.

Well, no one's perfect.

;)

Thanks for the info Molech! I am a little bit more in favor of WoTC, I also liked Lost Empires of Faerun, Heroes of Darkness, and others and WotC was really excellent in putting out high optical quality for nearly all their products (just forget about things like sword and fist, et al).

Although 1st Ed. AD&D retrofitted T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil, A1-4 Scourge of the Slave Lords, and GDQ1-7 Queen of the Spiders into a loose narrative with three story arcs, it wasn't initially designed as a coherent sequence. In fairness, the 3.0 "Adventure Path" (The Sunless Citadel, The Forge of Fury, The Speaker in Dreams, The Standing Stone, Heart of Nightfang Spire, Deep Horizon, Lord of the Iron Fortress, and Bastion of Broken Souls) was designed as a coherent sequence, but it was also designed as a set of loosely connected modules instead of a series of adventures following a central plot. However, even that was a step forward from the completely independent single modules and short arcs that were the norm.

Shackled City was the first mass publication "Adventure Path" specifically designed to take a party from 1st to 20th level in a series of linked adventures while following a single overarching plot.

In the interest of full disclosure, of course, Chris Youngs DID come up with the idea of doing a serialized Adventure Path style series in Dungeon... but he had moved on to work on Dragon by the time the 3rd adventure in Shackled City was done.

And thus we see the difference between "idea" and "execution".

There have been some mixed reviews of the first part of Scales of War. I agree with most of the detractors. The adventure was poorly executed and really fell flat in excitement and innovation as soon as the party leaves town and heads for the dungeon.

However, I have not had the opportunity to more than just skim the second part. What are people's impressions of it?

I really like the second installment. The only problem I have now is trying to figure out where to place it now that the FRCG has come out? Anyone have any ideas?

I remember a post on wizards.com about Red Hand pf Doom in Forgotten Realms and they said Elsir Vale fit perfectly over a portion of the map but I can't for he life of me remember where it was. I want to say it was near the Dalelands but I'm not sure.

I don't know if the expanded map for the second installment of Scales of War still fits over this area but it's worth poking around on the big map and seeing.

I'd arguethat the Dragon Lance series from DL1 through DL15 was in fact the first true adventure path - though the term was probably not used.

The original Red Hand of Doom was set in the Channath Vale in Faerun (see the Shining South). Here's a modified map for RHoD.
