Maka’s lips peeled back in a snarl, smoke curling from her nostrils as the temperature in the room surged. "I don't trust this!" she growled, her voice rough and deep, turning draconic. "Quasit, let me burn her!" Flames roared to life across her arms and shoulders, casting wild, flickering shadows.

The piping voice of the halfling witch cuts through the dark, cavernous interior of the nave. She steps to the front of the group and drops to both knees before 'Baba Yaga'.

"Forgive them Grandmother, they are addled by weeks of deception and hardship. Of course we shall obey you and take you to the Hut."

"If I may ask, what do you intend to do with Rasputin's daughter, Anastasia? Is she also fated to die? Or will you put her on the vacant throne of this forsaken land? Whatever your will, I seek only to serve you, as is my duty."

"You think I have a teleport prepared on the day I'm fighting Rasputin? Bah!" Baba Yaga snarls at Quasit. Her expression softens just slightly as she looks at Selena. "That all depends on how well she listens to me, child. I do need a descendant who won't betray me on the throne of Irrisen, she might be suitable for that."

She seems to be ignoring Maka.

She looks over toward Maka and shares a significant look. Then she takes a step forward, draws out her swords and then rests them casually on her shoulders.

"I want to see Rasputin's body or we're not leaving this place." she says, no longer asking.

Sakitu stays well back while Quasit and Maka remove the crucified corpse from the door. When that grisly task is done and the door is opened, she follows the others into the interior.

The others immediately start talking with the hag who calls herself Baba Yaga, plying her with questions, but Sakitu holds back. There's nothing she can add.

While they talk, she looks around the room. The weeping statues make her stomach turn so she avoids looking at them too much. It seems odd that there isn't any other door to this room.

She scoots up next to Fin while he remains on high alert and speaks to him in a low voice. "No doors out. That can't be right. Do you really think that's Baga Yaga?"

I'm going to assume Quasit is not close enough to Baba Yaga to get in a full attack. I'll include Sneak Damage since she should be flat-footed, disregard it if that isn't the case.

Maybe she was truly Baba Yaga. Maybe not. Probably not. --Maybe not.

Maybe Rasputin was truly already dead. Probably not. But Elvanna wasn't dead.

At any rate, it didn't matter any more. Time to lay down the cards.

I've arranged you roughly how I thought you were on the map based on discussion up to this point

As Quasit's blades strike home, the old crone is swiftly replaced with an inhuman creature--still humanoid in shape, but with horns, a third, red eye in her forehead, blue skin, and a hissing serpent for a tail. She takes a step back, her snake-tail's hiss crescendoing.

Everyone within a 30' cone in front of her--which I think is everyone but Selena and Chest Thumper--make a DC 22 Will save or be affected by her quickened crushing despair, which gives a -2 on basically all rolls.

She then beckons to Fin. Fin has to make a Will save DC 20 or be compelled to run up to her and kiss her. This happens before his shot, but note the -2 to saves if he fails against the despair.

”Why you lying…! Queen of Witches my ass!” snarls Quasit, genuinely angry at this deceptive gambit by the latest demonic lackey of Rasputin.

For a moment the rogue locks gazes with the insidious third eye of the creature, and she finds herself doubly re-assailed by all the doubts and fatigues of recent days. It was never going to end, was it? Even if they got past this thing, even if they got past Rasputin, even if they defeated Elvanna — it was never going to end. The whole quest was a perpetual voyage of the damned. The bitterness of the realization nearly overwhelms her. She tries to compensate with some empty bluster.

”Nice snake-tail. If you sit down wrong, does it get mad and bite you, Queen of Witches?” she sneers.

Kalchine is able to fight off the thoughts of despair that try to overwhelm him at the whim of the strange 3 eyed woman. Though he is troubled by how easily his companions seem to succumb, knowing it is a sign of the mental exhaustion they must be feeling after the incessant onslaught of foes, troubles and setbacks they've faced.

"Stand fast! This is just one more obstacle and as easily overcome as any of the others in our path!" he calls out.

With Chest Thumper on the field of battle, and his best weapon, Kalchine places a spell on the Frost Ape to protect him, the two of them now literally sharing life force.

Casting Shield Companion so Kalchine and Chest Thumper each take half the damage done to Chest Thumper.

Chest Thumper, having spent far more time as a tiny plaything in Kalchine's pocket is more than happy to get out and do some damage. He rushes into the room, largely filling it with his bulk and tries to take a bite out of the strange woman.

In some way Sakitu had been hoping that they really had found Baba Yaga. It would have meant that her adventure was almost over. As Quasit attacks it, the old hag morphs into a hideous, three eyed monster.

Sakitu gasps. That third eye -- red, piercing, malevolent -- captures her gaze. She can't look away as it bores into her soul. She sobs aloud as it floods her with a crushing sense of despair.

"No. Why us? Why me? No. Just go away." She can barely get the words out through her tightening chest. But some inner part of her demands to fight back. She raises a trembling arm and makes shaky gestures in the air. Aligned with the gestures she chants a magical phrase that comes unbidden to her mind.

There's a slight buzz in the air and the demon monster creature reacts at an attack on its mind.

Feeblemind cast at the creature. DC 24 Will to negate. SR applies so I'll roll penetration.

Spell penetration, spell penetration feat: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 14 + 2 = 25


Selena frowns, less at the imposter and more at not being in the position she had hoped before combat starts.

On the other hand, the odd looking eye and everyone’s reaction to it, especially Saki’s, Selena figures it is time to try out a spell, conversing with Winter in a quick excited murmur, she quickly swaps spells. She is preparing Medusa’s Bane in place of Black Tentacles. Next round she’ll cast it, move close enough, and draw attention to herself, if the thing is still alive.

Maka burns the daemon, though she can tell it resisted a bit of her fire. Fin's pierces his target without any difficulty. Chest Thumper is less effective but he does cause some damage. Bulvi's blade, however, is very effective.

The daemon resists Sakitu's spell. Badly wounded she retreats around Maka Who gets an AoO into the next room.

As you enter the next room:
The air feels... thick, somehow, almost burning as you push through it.

It's a neutral evil forbiddance effect. If you're not evil or you're not neutral on law/chaos, take 6d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 2, 2, 4) = 25 damage. If you're not evil *and* you're not neutral on law/chaos, take 12d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 5, 3, 3, 6, 3, 3) = 50 damage. DC 24 Will save for half damage.

Maka lashed out as the daemon fled. "You're not getting away that easy!" she snarled.

Without hesitation, she surged after her foe, a jet of fire propelling her through the doorway. The moment she crossed the threshold, agony tore across her body. Some foul, invisible magic tried to tear her apart from the inside out. Maka’s teeth clenched, her iron will refusing to yield, even as blood seeped from her mouth. She answered the unseen assault the only way she knew: with more fire.

She blasted forward, flames roaring from her hands, continuing her assault on the wounded daemon. "The room will hurt you!" She called a warning to the others.

As the lying snake-woman flees, Quasit is right behind her, and runs face-first into the burning evil aura of the next room before Maka can shout her warning...

A part of Quasit wanted it to end here. But she grits her teeth and pushes ahead as small burning cuts open all over her body. It was like running through water--or in a dream. In frustration she shouts her determination and keeps her legs moving and her eyes fixed on their target.

She catches up to the daemon, blades now coated with her own blood as well as that of her enemy. She smiles wickedly.

"Oh no, you don't get away that easy. You can't teleport out, can you? What a shame."

She brings her blades up into a posture of readiness to fend off attacks and deliver a killing strike.

Kalchine runs up to what he believes is the threshold between the two rooms, which is close enough for him to see the daemon, but takes him too long to do anything else.

Maka's flame blast finishes off the daemon, but before you can relax, the pile of benches that made up the room's eastern 'wall' suddenly explodes outward!

Chest Thumper, Quasit, and Maka take 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8 damage, DC 15 Reflex for half (so yes, probably only Chest Thumper will take any damage). The terrain marked on the map is subsuquently difficult terrain.

Beyond you see a large space, mostly clear save for some scattered debris. A trio of men in black priestly robes stands spread out through the room, as well as a very familiar nightmarish horse and headless rider. Beyond them, the back of the temple is dominated by a contraption of wire and copper cylinders--the World Engine. And in the back of the machinery, surrounded by arcs of violet lightning, stands Rasputin.

Maka merges with her flames, flying towards Rasputin... only to suddenly stop 10' from him. Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 41 Her flames continue on to strike him even as she slides down an invisible dome... and Rasputin looks unharmed.

"Predictable" he sniffs.

Maka now discovers she's in the midst of a wall of wind. While it doesn't do more to her than make her clothing and hair whip about, it has a much more critical effect on Fin's arrows, which deflect sharply upwards as they fly through the wind wall, missing their target.

Rasputin has been watching you carefully and planning countermeasures... Sakitu still can go before the first of your enemies.

How long does the Crushing Despair last? The spell says 1 minute per level. Is that accurate for this situation? Do I have any sense that the fire trap is active or inactive?[ooc]

Still with an impossible sense of dread and dispair, Sakitu steps up to the doorway. She can see all the way through the broken remains of the building to where Maka is trying to burn a figure. She recognizes the malevolent creature -- Rasputin. They are all doomed. What can they possible do against such a powerful evil?

She reaches out with her magic. She threads a tenuous stream of ethereal energy across the space, weaving through the space till it reaches Rasputin. With her mind and soul she twists the stream of energy around him and wills it to constrict.

Kalchine doesn't particularly expect it to stop any of those he traps within but at least he can start whittling away at their health and make them make a decision when he creates a wall of fire surrounding the horseman and two of the vampires. He orients it so that the heat is directed within, turning it into a furnace.

The unholy magic slammed into Maka, wrenching a guttural scream from her throat as blood streamed from her ears, eyes, and mouth. But vicious as the spell was, it didn’t stop her.

"Is that all you’ve got!?" she snarled, smoke coiling from her lips. And then, she vanished.

A heartbeat later, a pillar of fire erupted beneath Rasputin’s feet
