Aardvark's "At Least It's a Dry Heat" Dark Sun Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master Troy Malovich

An adventure set in the world of Athas. Kalak has just been slain by a group of escaped slaves. The rest of the City-states are under an air of panic and discontent, as the Sorcerer-kings try to control their citizens to avoid any uprisings.

I can post some of those later if it will save you some time!

Thanks for the offer, but I like to have all my house rules in my DM profile for ease of lookup. I will have the weekend, wife will be out, to update all my stuff before the final decision is made.

Just had a PbP campaign go bust, so came to check the recruitment threads and saw this one! Woot! Dark Sun has long been my favorite setting, so I'd love to get in on this one!

I'm thinking something like a dwarf cleric, along the lines of Caelum from the PP series. I'll peruse the options and post a strawman soon...

4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 2) = 11 > 10
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 2) = 14 > 12
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 5) = 18 > 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 3) = 20 > 17
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 2) = 15 > 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 2) = 14 > 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 2) = 11 > 10

Final Array: 17, 15, 14, 12, 12, 10 ... +9, so in the ballpark.

I have my sling ready!

Spoiler:

Sling large
Attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Damage 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

A Half-giant sling? The Halflings are lined up around the block waiting for their turn to ride.

Oh yeah!

I got into alot of trouble with costs of gear!

Armor and weapons are base cost times 2 for the size!
studded leather armor not 25 gold.......50 gold what a bargain!....

Sling --free------large sling still free!

shortbow not 30 gold.......60 gold!

So I guess it will be.....
Half-giant, halfling slinger

OK, I finally have a formal application framed.

Seeing the submissions were weak on Charisma-based concepts, I morphed my wasteland survivor into Sinorei, a human Wilder -- and Quib, her greedy, selfish psycrystal.

Details are in the profile page since I'll likely iterate on them a few times today.

Background Glimpse:

Scrambling over the loose dusty rocks, Sinorei climbed into a position where she could see the source of the wisping smoke. She smelled cooking meat and her stomach rumbled with desire.

She was starving to death.

*Thieves and murderers in that camp, your kind* - came the voice, silky and smooth in her mind.

Sinorei frowned at a rough leather pouch on her side, as she often did when communicating with the purplish crystal within.

I am not a murderer! she thought back at it, her emotions swelling insider her as her face flushed.

*Tell that to the merchant last week whom the crows now feast upon*

She couldn't respond, her anger choking not just her verbal voice, but her thoughts as well.

*It is good my dear, you may need those emotions shortly - you have been seen and a man approaches you.*

Swallowing her dry spit, she coughed. Quib was right, a man wearing a sash was looking up at her position and shouted at her.

-=**=-

Her stomach was full and she was rested. Seeing the bandit's leader undressing, fear soon overcame the sense of fulfillment of first real food she had eaten in over a week. The dirty man leered at her, he was missing an ear and viciously scarred.

She had played her part well, pledging to join the men, acting naive to surviving in the rough wastelands. Her loose fitting clothes baring enough skin to leave an insatiable look of hunger on the brigand's leader matching her own stares at the spit in their camp.

*Is this our new home, or will he join the merchant?* - came Quib's voice again, half taunting and half mocking her plight.

"I...", she spoke aloud, not realizing it. Tears welled in her eyes. Likely this thug deserved it, but that didn't make her feel any better about what she was about to do.

"... I'm sorry." she blurted, standing, her eyes glowing a deep amethyst, her hands radiating light. The light discharged and hurled at the bandit, impacting his chest and knocking him backwards into his crude bedroll.

He didn't move.

Scrambling, Sinorei picked up her meager possessions, and grabbed a spear from the tent before running outside. The men of the camp were drunk in their dreams, and didn't notice as she escaped into the dark.

I should also offer, since I submitted the last character - if Sinorei tips the scale and Aardvark ends up in having to deny a single submission, I'd step aside so that nobody was excluded, as I've had good fortune to play in several PbPs already.

Actually my character is almost completed!

Click on my profile!

I am liking the look of the party fighting wise.

I imagine people like look a half-giant, his calves are huge....wait it is a couple of muls...with wings....wait....no with Thrikreen.

They won't see a human or elf for certain.....

@Mrdark
Have you finished your character?

I will be an archer ranger with a sling till I can get a mighty, composite, large, longbow. It seems rapid shot at second level applies to a sling, so I am still in business! ;)

Manyshot though is only for a bow ;(

@anyone else
excited about characters or have finished them?

This bonus stacks with the Endurance feat. This bonus may also be applied to saving throws against spells and magical effects that cause weakness, fatigue, exhaustion or enfeeblement.
Nonlethal damage reduction: When a mul takes nonlethal damage from any source, that damage is reduced by 2.
Dwarven Blood: For all special abilities and effects, a mul is considered a dwarf. Muls, for example, can use dwarven weapons and magic items with racially specific dwarven powers as if they were dwarves.

I have my character sheet saved in a doc so I can just copy and paste it when I need to. I have not done weapons or armor yet because I am waiting on picking a weapon until I see more native weapons. I also re-fluffed the bully and reactionary traits to fit Averel's background better.
The idea I had for the character was to be a two handed fighter than would force enemies to attack him while he is making sure that the enemy can not get away easily. He is like this because of his bodyguard background and training.

Here's my submission for the dwarf cleric. Years in the desert, seeking his enslaved family, have left Morthak a bit sunburned in the mind. He still worships the sun's power, but erratic devotions have changed his abilities over time, hence Fire and Madness domains (using the Insanity sub-domain). If that's too goofy, I'll change it.

Regarding his proximity to Urik, its easy that the slavers' trail has led to the city-state.

A couple questions remain regarding the dwarf traits, like Hatred (all the goblins and orcs are dead) and Dwarven Focus. Do you want me to use the Dark Sun 3 rules, or are you house ruling them yourself?

Same for the weapon materials - bone, obsidian, etc...

Let me know if I missed anything! :p

I might change out some stuff later, my goal was to make him fully functioning and ready to rumble right away!

From my research the Dm can let me know how many weeks I can roll craft checks for to work on my eventual composite longbow!

I expect to be making "weekly" craft rolls on it throughout the game, no way it can be finished pre-game start......

Might make it a right of passage for tribe members in training....

That seems like a neat idea. A lot of tribes did things like that.

Focus upon the survival of the tribe, focus on what-ever challenged that survival in a given day, The tribe living in the wilderness requires a guide, his father is now the guide and once Grimm returns from questing to learn of challenges he may face in the future, so that one day he can guide the tribe.....

Utilizes skill to make what he needs for survival. Many demanding tasks await this one as he works to demonstrate his worth to lead the tribe. His current task is to craft a masterwork, composite (+5) large longbow. Once finished he must return to the tribe and be given his next task.

So now I have given the DM an opening to give crazy tasks later on!

My character has to find out information from the underworld of Athas to find out who killed his master and why. If that does not scream sub plot I have no idea what does.

Are you saying as a bodyguard your charge was killed?

I didn't see the background in the spoiler above, must be in the thread somewhere......

It is in the thread I did not put it in the sheet to make it easier to add stuff. My character's charges are his master's son and daughter he saved them.

Back Story:

Averel was born as many Muls are born to slaves. His master Ezio was different from many others because he treated his slaves well so that he could have loyalty from them. Averel was born to be a bodyguard to his master. Many people knew the combat prowess of the Mul. Knowing what the Mul could do Ezio made it a point of pride to have only Muls keep his family safe. Averel was trained in the way of war since a young age. Once he was 15 he was deemed worthy to be a bodyguard. Since he was young and not yet ready to travel with the Ezio it was decided that he would watch over the Ezio's two children. Averel was two years older than the Ezio's son Aleron and four years older than the Ezio's daughter Alida. The children took to their new protector very well even though Averel tried his best to tell them that he was just a bodyguard.

Averel protecting Aleron and Alida lasted for another four years. Averel stopped kidnappers and killers no less than six times during these years. With defending Aleron and Alida with his life the two started to see Averel more as a friend than just a bodyguard. All this changed half way though the sixth year of Averel duty. Ezio's compound was attacked by an unknown troop of soldiers with a bloody claw on their armor. They came in the middle of the night without a sound. They killed everyone in their way without mercy while laughing and smiling. The bodyguards and gladiators tried their best to stop the enemy but they all fell like the others. Who ever these soldiers were they were unbelievable warriors. Averel hearing the yells and sound of battle wakes up than runs to Aleron room. He finds Aleron hiding after giving him a sword the duo sets off to find Alida. As they near Alida's room they hear voices and crying. Preparing for the worst they got ready to check the room. Seeing nothing wrong in the room they go into the room finding Alida hiding under her bed. After they got Alida they fled to the escape tunnels.

Once out of the tunnels they ran to Aleron's and Alida's Aunt Akilina's compound. They reached the compound four day later. Tired they met with Akilina to tell her what had happened. Akilina sent out some men to find out what happened at her brother's compound. When the men returned they came back with Ezio's body. They came back to tell how they found everyone in the compound was dead. Hearing this Aleron's face turn hard as stone and Alida starts to cry. A few days later Aleron and Alida came to Averel they asked him if he could help them found the people who did this. Averel knowing how hard both of them were hit nodded swearing to find these men. Aleron swore that he would find information on these soldiers. After a few months Aleron found a lead to who these soldiers were. The lead was to Urik who was famed for having unstoppable army. The soldiers who attacked were better than the bodyguards and gladiators they had to be very good soldiers. Aleron found out that they are a group of mercenaries that were hired by people in Urik often. With this information Averel set out to Urik to see if he could find any more information on these mercenaries.

Here is the back story so you can read it.

Ahh so he did succeed in protecting his charges, others failed in protecting his employer.....

I have some serious work to do on my backstory!

Is the back story good? The hardest part for me is writing up a good back story. I can come up with a theme for the character and write up a character sheet in about 20 or 40 minutes a back story takes me like three or four hours.

Better than mine!

My whole "plot" is trying to become leader "First Guide" of my tribe the Desert Runners.....

The first task is creating your own gear from materials in the evironment (or your own hair)

second task surviving alone in the wilds for a full year

third task surviving the cities and traveling the world, and creating a signature weapon.........

next task unknown, how many tasks also unknown!

Maybe you can do 12 tasks so you can be like Hercules? Half-Giants fit with what I think of how Hercules would looked like.

I like it....I will let our DM decide if he wants me to make those or if he wants to OR both.

Plus I am "goliath" who uses a sling, ironic right?

If you have a giant club we just have to find a large cat like animal to skin that you can wear as a cape than you can be the Hercules of Athas. Yeah is kind of ironic but hey if you ever meet a npc enemy named David than yeah lol.

Dark Archive

I love Dark Sun from the old days! Seeing that the party suffers from a shortage of arcanists, I thought I would throw up a crossblooded sorcerer.

Alright you do have a giant club Grimm. I did not know if you went with the bug crushing weapon or the club.

Here is drayen's submission.

Background:

Q'arlyl was born in the semi-secret breeding pits of the king of Urik. Humanu's constant drive to keep others from encroaching upon his power and territory means defeating other sorcerers and wizards. Ruthless in victory, he swiftly kills all those who oppose him. Unbeknownst to most, instead of killing all opponents, he often stops short with females of all humanoid races. Enslaving these females, he keeps them in seclusion from outsiders. There he breeds them with himself and his offspring to create powerful casters that he molds into the perfect followers and bodyguards. Most of them are bent to divine magics where they worship Humanu, thus ensuring their sire, or grandsire, more power while enforcing his edicts and wielding his will across all of Urik.

Q'arlyl was one such product. He was born to an elf female who was captured when Humanu destroyed her tribe as they drew too close to the territories of Urik. Originally mistaking her for a druid, Humanu quickly realized that she was, in fact, a wizard. Her spellbook was cunningly hidden as tattoos scrawling across her body. Taking her to the depths of his palace he indoctrinated her into his breeding program.

Many months later, she bore a son. When she tried to keep the baby away from the midwives, they severely beat her, leaving her for dead. The next morning when they came to see if she lived, they found her room empty. As there were no windows and only the one door, still barred from the outside, it was assumed that one of the thri-kreen guards were responsible. All who had access in that time were summarily executed.

Q'arlyl was immediately taken from his mother and raised by wetnurses completely loyal to his father. His education began as soon as he was old enough to be taught. He was kept active and athletically trained to hone his body in addition to his mind. It was in the physical arts that he excelled. Tireless, he never seemed to be affected by the conditions. No matter how hot it got, he always seemed entirely comfortable. Academically he suffered; always falling behind his siblings, nephews and nieces in the classroom. He showed no aptitude for wizardly pursuits and was only marginally average in intelligence. He also displayed little wisdom, taking unnecessary risks heedless of the consequences.

After formally testing Q'arlyl, he was found to be devoid of magical aptitude. As one of the rare disappointments, he was relegated to the duties of a soldier, although as an officer befitting his birth and station. It was on one of the desert patrols where he found himself and his company are attacked by a giant silt serpent. The company manages to inflict grevious damage to the creature but are wiped out doing so. Q'arlyl, weapon broken, begins swinging with his fists to go down fighting when suddenly claws erupt from his fingers. As the massive snake sinks it fangs into the young commander's side, he literally rends the snake, killing it.

Shocked at what has happened, he decides to keep the knowledge to himself. Nearly dead from the venom, Q'arlyl crawls back to Urik where he is berated for losing an entire company and is summarily cast out. In the streets, he has a hard time of surviving, never having needed to fight for a meal before. Seen as weak competition, he is attacked one night by other beggars. As they come at him, a long fiberous tendril sprouts from his palm, snaking out grab the legs of the de facto leader of the muggers. Tripping the man, the vine slithers back into his hand. The others are terrified by this sight and flee. Q'arlyl grabbed the prone leader only to quickly release him as he screamed in pain. His touch had severely injured the man, leaving him unconscious and dying. Running, he lost himself in the back alleys of Urik.

Q'arlyl now makes his living as a messenger; running missives back and forth between of means. What little reputation remains from his heritage earns him the trust that he keeps whatever is said to himself only to be spoken to the recipient of the message and none other.

DAardvaRK SUN DM:

(He is a crossblooded Draconic and Verdant sorcerer. Unknown to Q'arlyl or anyone else living, his mother was not a wizard but a sorcerer. The tattoos were only a list of the spells she knew and not a spellbook from which she prepared her spells. The beating did nearly kill her and it was the catalyst that enabled her to reach inside and discover a new ability, the power to translocate herself.

I left Q'arlyl's spells somewhat vague so as to align them with the correct color of his paternal draconic heritage. As I do not know what color/metal Hamanu is, I didn't know which one to choose. I plan to keep the spell selections evenly split between nature type spells and energy spells. He is an unconscious caster meaning that he does not knowingly cast spells instead unconsciously causing their effects when he makes the appropriate phrases and/or gestures; i.e., "It's getting warm." while he fans himself with his hand to cast enduring elements.

I just went with gear that I had the costs and stats for....I might change out later, I suspect cost will be a large factor in what I start with.....

Oh that makes sense. Oh yeah do we start out with gp or cp? Since we have no metal weapons really gp seems well a bit much.

Use ceramic, but just in label. It doesn't change the prices of all the stuff in the books or the amount of money you start with. Just remember, you can't buy anything metal from the books, unless you spend 100x the cost.

I am complete.

Right, so, here's we go: one human (crusading) druid. I went dragon shaman for two reasons -- one I thought that the lizard affinity was thematic of a largely desert barren wasteland, but also because it gave him one more reason to be a devout, crusading hater of all things arcane -- considering the sorcerer kings and their powers to be perversions of his totem).

The profile link should have a full character sheet and short backstory -- I believe the official ruling was made that Druids could take subdomains, so I took the Catastrophe subdomain of Destruction (available to Dragon Shamen) -- if that's not possible, I can revert to the regular domain (really, it doesn't matter mechanically for a few levels anyway).

I'm certainly willing to take comments, if you have any.

Edit: Backstory now done.

hey can we have flint & steel or does it cost....100 gold?

Also small steel mirror, same question.

Otherwise I will add a bow drill and shiny mineral flake to my sheet as a substitute.........

Suddenly, Tindertwigs seem like a very good deal. ;)

What we really need is "Cast Spark WITH YOUR MIND!"

Sadly, I don't get a fourth orison 'til 2nd... and I thought being able to make water in the desert might be more immediately useful than making fire... Plus, I would think that I could start a fire with my +9 to survival.

Shadow Lodge

Everybody goes for the Disintegrate Psionic power, nobody goes for Build Campfire

Thought that might perk things up for a second!

;)

We are the party who will die of hypothermia over-nights!

Thankfully kank poo is highly flammable.

And easy to find!

I hope everyone has finished a character!

I am just waiting on the weapons Athasan weapons than my character should be done.

I like making lists, so...

Cool backstory, but being nit-picky... dragons never existed on Athas before the sorcerer kings. They weren't wiped out or hunted down or anything - the kings ARE the dragons on Athas.

Another tidbit is that the vast majority don't know the kings are evolving dragons either. The Dragon (aka Borys), is the one dragon people refer to and rightly fear.

Really? I had thought they were hunted down as part of the whole purity thing back in the day. Wow, that changes things somewhat. That's what I get for not going back to Athas since 2ed... apparently, you forget stuff.

I mean, I knew that the whole evolution thing wasn't known, but I thought that his totem would have given him that insight -- but without there ever having been dragons, it would more or less completely invalidate the character.

I don't know about "completely invalidate", but yeah, not so much on the dragons. Elemental drakes are, in a lot of ways, iconic beasts filling a similar niche, just not on the intelligence side. Perhaps his tie is more towards that end - "drake shaman", as it were.

Dragon-kin shaman, then. That must be what I was remembering - the existence of drakes, I mean. Well, assuming the DM allows a drake shaman to be mechanically equivalent, all I'd need to do is strike that one bit of knowledge from the backstory. [Edit in progress...]

Q'arlyl wrote:

** spoiler omitted **...

In the backstory, the Sorcerer-King Nibenay is actually the one with secret shadow brides. Also, the dragons are not tied to any metal or color. As mentioned by Morthak, The Dragon is the only known one, and all the Sorcerer-Kings are not known to be dragons.

Mrdarknlight, I will try to have the weapons in my profile tonight. Most of them are really just other versions of things. A Carrikal is a Battle-axe, a Trikal is a Halberd, a Tortoise-Blade is a spiked shiled that is slashing instead of piercing. The tough ones are the Alhulaks, Cahulaks, and Chatchka.

Thank you DAardvaRK SUN DM for the weapon list. I figured it might be like that but I thought since it a vastly different world might go with more native weapon just to get more flavor in the character. If any of those are like a two handed sword might go with that or the Carrikal.
