That horse getting away was unfortunate...
Btw, could someone put Hylaen just above Vik? I'm on phone. Not that it matters now, I think the fight is pretty much done, but makes more sense with my post.

DM Aku |

@Tegan
Happy birth day!
All best wishes and happiness.
@Djbelle
I usually tend to consider that for small, not important NPCs, zero hit points equals death, it’s a pain to keep tracking negative hit points for NPCs that doesn’t even have names.
Also, Viklop horse, backpack and most likely his chart as well. :O
Damn, that was mean.

DM Aku |

Also, I’ve added a ‘dramatis personae’ kinda of silly excel sheet on top of the page, which I’ll keep track of the named npcs you encounter during the game. It’s a habit I took on when DM’ing Way of the Wicked. Everyone can edit that file, if you want to add any more information about any contact you acquire inside the game.
@Loot
How will the party deal with loot? I can set up an excel sheet to keep track of it, but I would like that one of the players took care of this task.

DM Aku |

@Damiel
The damage on that turn was enough to kill both bandits. I ended up not taking into account your command, because the guy would have died anyway. In a hindsight, that was a mistake on my part, I could have altered the order of things, would make a better narrative.
In my defense, I'd just woken up and everything was still a bit blurry.
Edit:
I'll give some time for Djbelle and Tegan to answer and discuss the first battle events. If I post Oleg's response, the history will move and that's a really good RP opportunity wasted.

Damiel Morgethain |

@DM Aku
Yea, that is what I figured (damage enough to kill both bandits), and Damiel seeing both go down would have not issued the command. Not a mistake, and no need to re-order initiative, I would have like to have seen a mention that they went down before his "turn" in the initiative order though.
Heh, understand just waking up. I'm retired and get up late almost every morning, and take at least one nap during the day....
-- Damiel (aka david)

Djebelle Torr |

Heh, grateful for the opportunity to post. Hope it's worth the wait.
Also, happy birthday Tegan! :-)
On a metagaming point, Djebelle won't think of this right now but we have a bandit on horseback who escaped. Tracking him so that his friends don't have time to come for us is something of a priority. He might even lead us straight to their lair.

Djebelle Torr |

Love it.
Wait, his fellow men? What is Rendyl – a former bandit?
...or someone who believes that all people are basically just people? :P

DM Aku |

For those wondering WTF is that horse about, ask Djbelle (in game).
Also, I'm off for the night. Tomorrow I have to go back to work, I'm not sure how my posting schedule should be. But I might update it earlier in the morning then the afternoon/evening.
For battle posts, it should be only on evenings, because I can’t really open the books at work to consult the stuff I need, but I should be able to answer RP posts during the day.

DM Aku |

Don't mind me, I'm just testing my Autohotkey script to automatize some of the commands and formats.

Apologies for the delay in posting: our amazing, evil DM has bowled me something of a googly and I'm having trouble deciding how to play it.
EDIT: and the answer is, of course, "with the straightest of bats."

This is great - I've amended the bit on Happs to add that he mentioned a "Stag Lord" and as a reminder to find out more about this from the bandit we captured.

@All
Guys let’s take this opportunity to make any last minute changes to your character before we truly begin the game.
Of course, you shouldn’t do anything drastic such as changing race/class, but feel free to reselect feats, reallocate ability points, change your sphere/magical talents, or pick different skills.

Rendyl Millary |

I think I would like to swap out Weapon Focus (Bows) for Rapid Shot, if that's ok. I'll get Precise Shot at level 2 and then Weapon Focus at 3.

Rendyl Millary |

I would like to.
I guess the discussion about loot never really took place.
I'm more of a proponent of 'If you can make the most utility of it, then you should have it' theory. So Rendyl would get the best bow-related items, Vik would get the best light armor, Djebelle the divine items, etc. And then liquidate the remainder of the items and split the cash evenly.
However, we can use the 'bid' system, as well, where if Rendyl wanted the composite bow it would come out of his 'total' share of the loot in gp.
I'm handling the loot sheet, so if no one has an opinion, I'll just assume you all are ok with the 'if you want it, take it' theory. And if two folks ever want the same thing, we can amicably sort it out or look to see who's gotten the most loot recently.

Viklop "Vik" Kolavar |

I actually agree with you Rendyl. Whoever is best suited to the item should get it. I am not a treasure hoarder and will not get upset if others get things and I do not. I am sure the DM will make sure we all get something of use to our characters...realistically how many possible magical Aldori Dueling Swords will we find in this adventure?? Probably none, but I am sure the DM can make a regular magical sword into whatever he wants...or add one to the treasure. I have faith that the treasure will divide up evenly in the end, so whoever can use it, should get it!
just my 2cp :-)

Djebelle Torr |

Confession: I hate loot tracking. Whatever simplifies it is good with me
EDIT: Urgh, posted too soon. Was going to add, would definitely be up for using the Automatic Bonus Progression to eliminate the amount of magic items we need to accumulate/buy/keep track of.

OK, thanks for the offer. I'm thinking of changing Djebelle to a cleric of Asmodeus, charged with bringing the iron discipline of Hell to the wild and lawless Stolen Lands swapping out my Extra Spell Points feat for something else.
On a related note, has anyone taken any Divination sphere talents?

Rendyl Millary |

Ok, I'll go ahead and have Rendyl take the composite longbow and 4 arrows, then. He'll throw his 'regular' longbow into the loot pile.
If you all would do me a favor and post in discussion whenever you are taking things out of loot (or in OOC in your game thread post), I would appreciate it.

Djebelle Torr |

OK, made some changes.
Skills: gave myself the Ride skill instead of Perception (we've got pretty good Perception as a group, I'm not adding anything there) and the Perform (sing) background skill instead of Appraise.
Feats: changed Extra Spell Points to Extra Sphere Talent and have taken the Divination base sphere talent.
I now have 5 spell points a day instead of 7. I've updated my stat-line accordingly.
Good to go!

I totally need to fix the errors on Tegan's character sheet, lol. I'll send you a pm later tonight.

Damiel Morgethain |

I am going to keep Damiel as is. For a few moments I thought about switching out Command (charm) for Greater Serendipity, but decided against it.
Will claim one of the horses, including saddle, bit, bridle, blanket, as well as a longbow. Forgot he is only good with simple weapons so no short sword for him.
@GM - How are you going to handle rations, water, etc. Is this something we need to keep track of?

DM Aku |

@GM - How are you going to handle rations, water, etc. Is this something we need to keep track of?
I'm still not sure yet how to deal with the whole 'sandbox' thingy from kingmaker yet.
From my other games, whenever there was sandbox stuff to the players decide on, the game would slow to a crawl, and I don’t want the game to slow down that much. I’ll consider this on the next days and decide how to approach this problem.If anyone has any suggestion, please mention it.
--
@All - Some modification on this game:
We’ll use automatic progression from unchained as you guys can see here.
@Magic Items:
Magic items will be extremely rare and hard to find, for that we’ll use progression bonus with 1 level higher, based on the table presented.

Damiel Morgethain |

@GM
I am running a Wrath of the Righteous PbP campaign, and in book 3 it is a sandbox. My guys and I decided that I would "lead" them from significant encounter to encounter rather than have them stumble around, and have the game come to a crawl. Also, since it is a PbP, we did away with all the random encounters when entering / staying within a hex. I also dropped a couple of the non-essential encounter areas that were little more then XP sinks.
Just a thought.

Re: Automatic Bonus Progression
By 1 level higher, do you mean that as 1st level characters we would use the 2nd level line in the table?

Rendyl Millary |

DM Aku, you could use a system where after a couple PC's agree on a course of action during hex exploration/dungeon crawling you go ahead and push the action forward. Alternayively we could elect a party leader or just take turns making those 'we go here' kinda of decisions.
Never use the Automatic Progression, but sounds neat.
As for rations, I went ahead and marked the four days off after our initial trip. Expending resources and having to resupply seem like part of the game, imo, but it is also bothersome record keeping.

Rendyl Millary |

Also, can we sell this loot at Oleg's? I'm not sure if you wanted us to RP that out or not...
All, I've added an 'Available Quests' tab on the Loot sheet. Please feel free to update/add to, etc.

Viklop "Vik" Kolavar |

I think Vik is good...updated to use the auto progression...which is awesome!!
As to the exploring...when I ran this game I would do a quick roll to see if anything was in the hex, then describe the terrain and move on. In those areas with set encounters, I would run them as an encounter...but I strayed so far from the actual game that I had the players doing all sorts of fun stuff..lol

Djebelle Torr |

I think the important thing is to keep the game moving (and have fun, of course!). If that means modifying the AP or hand-waving some stuff then so be it. When I have DM'd PbP games in the past, I've tended to use fewer of the as-written encounters, but made them more significant.
Having a blast, btw. Thanks for running this, DM Aku! And thanks for being awesome roleplayers, you guys! :-)
EDIT: I see we're going with ABP at level +1, which means we count as level 2 for that purpose, right? So there's no actual modification to be made yet, but at level 2 we will get the level 3 ABP bonus (resistance +1) - have I understood that correctly?

DM Aku |

@Sphere Casters
While we are at it, you can also take 'Boons' from the sphere of Power book as a feat.
Here's the list of avaliable boons:
Deathful Magic: The closer you are to death, the more powerful your magic. When you are at half hit points or less, you gain a +1 temporary bonus to your caster level. When you are at 1/4th your total hit points or less, this temporary bonus increases to +2.
Easy Focus: When maintaining a sphere ability through concentration, you only need to spend a move action to maintain concentration instead of a standard action. This does not decrease the sphere ability’s casting time, only the action used to maintain concentration.
Empowered Abilities: Your magic grows in strength the more you use it. If your current number of spell points is half your total spell
points or less, you gain a temporary +1 bonus to your caster level. If your current number of spell points is 0, the temporary bonus to your caster level becomes +2.
Fortified Casting: You may use your Constitution as your casting ability modifier if it is higher than your usual casting ability modifier. You must possess the Draining Casting drawback to select this boon.
Metamagic Expert: Whenever you augment a sphere ability with a metamagic feat, that sphere ability manifests at +1 caster level.
Overcharge: You may overcharge your magic, giving yourself great power at the cost of your own strength. Whenever you use a sphere ability, you may give yourself a +2 bonus to your caster level for that ability, but you become fatigued afterward. If you are already fatigued, you become exhausted. If you are exhausted, you collapse to the ground unconscious for 1d4 rounds.

Yes, you are both correct.
Remember that by using ABP, you won’t find ‘magic’ items to purchase anymore, only mundane and masterwork items.
Also, can we sell this loot at Oleg's? I'm not sure if you wanted us to RP that out or not...
All, I've added an 'Available Quests' tab on the Loot sheet. Please feel free to update/add to, etc.
Oleg will gladly purchase the items from you; however, his ‘money’ reserve is not that huge. Each two weeks, Oleg can purchase up to 1000gp in loot from you.
Thanks for adding the active quests info.

Rendyl Millary |

Alrighty, that's fair enough. Anybody else claiming horses or other equipment before I liquidate it? Do we want to keep the silver amulet, for now?
Also, DM Aku, should we just assume that any mounts we find (take) are decked out with saddle, bit, bridle, etc?

DM Aku |

Also, DM Aku, should we just assume that any mounts we find (take) are decked out with saddle, bit, bridle, etc?
Six of them are decked out with saddle, bit, bridle and all other things for mounting.
One of the horses was being used to pull the wagon.Night (Djebelle horse) has no equipment at all.

Hylaen |

I know it's late to add my mind to the discussion, but I agree that loot should go to whoever needs it. If something is useful for everyone, we keep it as party loot and share it. Things are less complicated this way, and keeps the comraderie alive ^^
Talking about loot, Hylaen will take a longbow and throw his shortbow to the loot pile. I would also love to keep those bottles of Alchemist Fire, if no one objects giving the icendiary elf even more firepower.
Just so everybody knows, I'll travel abroad next week, on the 11th, so I won't be as active here in the forum. I'll still have my phone and occasional wifi signal, also I intend to keep up with the story, but do expect less elaborate text coming from me for a while. Thanks to the preparations, I'm also swamped in things to do... I'll try to update on Hylaen's actions soon :)
