Traits:

Rostlander - You were raised in the south of Brevoy, a land of dense forests and rolling plains, of crystalline rivers and endless sapphire skies. You come from hearty stock and were raised with simple sensibilities of hard work winning well-deserved gains, the importance of charity and compassion, and the value of personal and familial honor. Yours is the country of the Aldori swordlords and the heroes who refused to bend before the armies of a violent conqueror. You care little for matters of politics and nobles or of deception and schemes. As you are thoroughly Brevic, the call for champions willing to expand your land’s influence into the Stolen Lands has inflamed your sense of patriotism and honor, and so you have joined an expedition to quest southward. Your hardy nature grants you a +1 trait bonus on all Fortitude saves.
Poverty-Stricken - Your childhood was tough, and your parents always had to make every copper piece count. Hunger was your constant companion, and you often had to live off the land or sleep in the wild. You gain a +1 bonus on Survival checks, and Survival is always a class skill for you.

Backstory:

Rendyl started his life on a small homestead in Southern Brevoy, the only son of a young man and woman named Markil and Daphne. His parents were very kind, but young and inexperienced. Their home was drafty, letting the freezing cold leach into the walls in the winter. Sometimes game was scarce, or the harvest in their large garden was poor. Hunger was a constant companion to young Rendyl, but he inherited his parents' stoicism, rarely complaining of his plight.

As he grew older, Rendyl was taught by Markil how to hunt, trap, and fish. The young boy's sharp mind quickly developed clever variations of the traps for small game, and his deft hands were very adept at wielding his father's bow, bringing down the larger animals. As Rendyl grew into his teens, life became easier for his family. Rendyl was an excellent hunter, and his help enabled Markil to patch up their humble home and make other improvements. His father even started teaching Rendyl how to play the battered guitar that he had kept in a closet for years, now having a bit of leisure time for such things.

Then disaster struck! As Rendyl returned home from a successful foray, a brace of rabbits in his hand, he saw a thick ribbon of black smoke in the distance from where his parents' house lay. He ran the rest of the way, but he was far too late. Rendyl's father lay away from the house, a black-fletched arrow protruding from his leg, multiple stab wounds in his chest. Rendyl found his mother's bones in the wreckage of the home after the fire had died down.

He also found another body, one of his father's arrows in its chest. The kobolds hadn't even bothered to bring their dead companion with them. In addition there was a larger set of humanoid footprints, possibly even an ogre. In shock, the young man dug his parents' graves and buried them, spending several days in despondent grief before hunger drove him to action. Fifteen years old, Rendyl decided to do his part to keep this scourge of civilization from harming others.

For several years Rendyl wandered about Golarion, learning what he could of kobolds, his anger at the wretched beasts brought down to a simmer as he patiently built up his experience. He talked with mercenaries, broke bread with fellow hunters, even spent several evenings with an old, retired ranger named Galvanus. In the evenings he would quietly strum his father's instrument, the feel of the strings and soft sounds bringing back pleasant memories.

It was during this time that he was introduced to the pantheon of Golarion's deities, specifically Erastil. Rendyl had grown up with a simple life, where bountiful harvests and good hunting were all a man needed. The young man could visit a larger town or city if need be, but he felt most comfortable in the wilderness or small settlements. Old Deadeye had in his portfolio most of what Rendyl cared about, so his faith made much sense.

After several years away, Rendyl finally decided to return home to Southern Brevoy, his emotional wounds having scabbed over and his capabilities to the point where he could revenge himself on kobolds if the opportunity arose. As he walked into Restov, with the intent of restocking on supplies before venturing out into the wilderness, he bumped into a young woman walking down the street, his eyes on his guitar as he plucked a simple medley.

Rendyl helped the young woman gather her things, shyly asking after her health. The woman, a well-dressed bolder sort, introduced herself as Ilana. The ranger walked her home, and soon came to call on her at regular intervals, wandering around the wilderness in the region for a few days before returning to meet her again. Their relationship quickly grew from friendship to lovers, with nearly all thought of revenge on the kobolds who had killed his family swept away by their passion.

Determined to settle down and provide a life for his future family, the young man found a local stable, where his skillset quickly found him work in the field of animal husbandry. With Rendyl's attentions, the work went much faster and cleaner with the now-well-behaved animals, and life was going good for him finally.

Until he received the letter. The letter from Ilana's father, a minor scion of the Surtova family. Stating how his daughter had run away to rebel against him and she had finished living her wild life. How she had returned to her family, and that she would never be with a low-born orphan. Rendyl was despondent for several days, asking around and having several people confirm for him that a carriage had indeed arrived for Ilana and that she had gotten into it, though with a petulant, angry air about her.

The ranger might possible have given up on life after that event, but as he walked dejectedly down the street, he noticed the flyers from the Swordlords, calling for reclamation of the Stolen Lands. Rendyl thought it a great opportunity for him to make good on his promise to himself those years ago, to make life better for his fellow man. An opportunity to immerse himself in hard work and forget his lost love. He would volunteer to help clear that wild area south of Brevoy of the vermin that infested it, and hopefully entice would-be settlers to come reside in the region. Rendyl looked forward to the small farmsteads that would inevitably spring up after safety was secured. He would do his part to make sure no children were orphaned in the Stolen Lands as he was.

Appearance/Description:
Rendyl stands a few inches taller than 6', his lanky frame containing more power than it would seem. His hair is cut shaggy, with jagged edges, indicative of his self-barbering. He shaves every so often, but it is not uncommon for him to accumulate several days of scruff. His hair is jet black, his eyes dark in his tanned face.

Rendyl speaks in a deep, gruff voice, his manner typically mild unless provoked. Rendyl is a kind man, but he saves his extra efforts for those down on their luck or left abandoned. He has a hatred of kobolds, abhorring their senseless violence.
