Yes, that explains its saves, STR and DEX, HD, etc. But here's the thing... Victor has the "preferred blueprint" innovation. So all automatons made from his preferred blueprint gain +1 HD. Does that increase its BAB as well?
How do I calculate its AC? Is it a flat 10 across the board, since it doesn't have a DEX mod? Because that seems a little low.
It says it has "construct traits", but it also says automatons are completely mindless and gain no skill points or feats. Does that mean it doesn't get the 2+INT skill points constructs get per hit dice?
What on earth are its other ability scores? Constructs don't have a CON score, but does it also not have any mental ability scores at all?
I'm all confused (and the fact that it's been a screwed-up week hasn't helped).

From my reading of the Tinker's Directives class ability, the automaton is pretty much a robot, and as such has no mind or willpower so no Int, Wis, Skills, Feats, AoOs or combat maneuver capabilities.
I'd say yes, the +1 HD increases its BAB if constructs use the +1 HD for +1 BAB progression. [EDIT - they do]
Unfortunately I have no idea on the AC thing. Sure seems feeble.

Alright. Thanks for clearing those bits up for me.
AC 10 is a bit... bleh. There's an invention to give it a whopping +1 natural armor bonus, but I don't get it until level 4, and I can't find anything regarding whether it stacks or not. Even if it does, by the time we're 4th level, what can't hit an AC of 14?
If Victor is within 30 feet of hs automaton, it gains his BAB as a bonus to attack rolls, AC and CMD. I guess that will become more useful once it's no longer +0.
Ah well. I guess for now, it makes a single slam attack at +1 for 1d4 damage, and has an AC of 10.

You can read more about the Tinker HERE in the Product Discussion. Folks ask for clarifications and the creator answers them.
Plus there is this from Endzeitgeist's Product review:
...- from the 1st level on, the automatons get the tinker's BAB as an insight bonus to atk, AC and CMD and may use the tinker's BAB to calculate their CMB and additionally may add their creator's saving throws as insight bonuses to their ridiculously low own - but only when within 30 ft. of the Tinker, 60 ft. at 9th level.

I dropped eight bucks for the Authoritative Tinker bundle. I don't buy 3rd-party products very often; I'm mostly trying to fill out my Paizo collection and subs first. Yes I know I have a problem. But after reading about it on the PFSRD, and then getting into this game, I figured I had to buy it. I'd feel bad using the class and not supporting the people who created it.
There's a lot more 3rd-party stuff that's caught my eye, but I need employment first. Stupid things, costing money.
Farash |
@Victor - WHere do you want to be El?
@ Also, why is the Automaton between Farash and Arden? Farash charged right up to Arden - though to tell the truth I completely failed to move him on the map myself... :)
@ Overlord/Jon - any chance we can get the current map put in your Avatar info, or in the header for the campaign?

So, I'm curious - what do you guys think of the new classes from the Advanced Class Guide? I quite like the Arcanist, and the a lot of the stuff in the Brawler should be applied to the Monk anyway (otherwise the monk is going to be utterly outshone). Not too sure on the others, yet.

I've only looked at a few of them. The Bloodrager looks really cool. For being based on the Witch, it seems like the Shaman has literally nothing in common with it. The Shaman's hexes could just as easily have been named something else. And the Investigator seems absurdly powerful.
Azeban |
They all seem really complicated to me. Thus Advanced Class Guide, I guess.
Pathfinder's approach to classes has always been to make 1-20 really excellent so that you're not ever forced to multiclass like you were with 3.5. So many classes had dead levels or were completely front-loaded.
But there are people like me who still love the idea of mixing classes together, so this works to help streamline that process by giving some classes that are specifically built for it (I think many of these are supposed to eventually have Archetypes, too?).
I think it helps to think of them like the Magus, rather than any of their actual base classes. It's a fusion of at least two different things. So, yeah, it's definitely complicated, but it's also intended to be.

I like a few of them - I've only read half the playtest document so far. The hunter is underwhelming, sadly. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the shaman. The investigator is AWESOME, and I'm itching to play one. The bloodrager is neat, and I think we needed the brawler.
More thoughts incoming as I continue reading.

Agreed on the Hunter. I'm going to try to convince a GM to let me try the Bloodrager soon.
The problem I'm seeing with the Shaman is that it's like, 96% Oracle, 2% Cleric, and 2% something that isn't the Witch, but let's call it the Witch. It doesn't look bad, I just haven't quite figured out how it's a fusion. The Swashbuckler looks pretty neat. It's basically "Want to play a Melee Gunslinger because your campaign doesn't have guns?" Which I like.
I still haven't looked at like half of them.

This is a Public Service Announcement:
I'm diving head first into last prep for my national certification test on the 20th. Therefore, my posting will probably slow a bit until then. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
JonGarrett |
My apologies. I didn't count on an unfortunate chain of events. Follow this if you will;
Jon gets ill with a stomach bug.
Jon gets better. Jon posts a message saying he'll be back in a day or so. Jon is a frickin idiot.
Jon's youngest son turns 2! Yay! Toddler party wears Jon out. Also, toddler starts puking. Boo!
Older children start puking. Boo!
Wife starts puking. Super boo!
People start recovering. Jon gets chest infection.
Jon throws up again.
Jon's stomach behaves and he returns to work...and to you!
Yay Jon, you slow sod.
Nice to see you're doing cool sign launguage stuff. We're not exactly moving at the speed of light right now (mostly my fault) so you'll probably be able to catch up.
Igor. |
That may be the best description of a series of unfortunate events outside the books of that name.
I'm having not much trouble keeping up here. Just wanted that PSA out there in case this thread blows up.
Azeban |
Ugh, hope everyone is feeling better Jon.
Along the lines of Igors PSA (and good luck on your certification, that's an awesome thing to be learning!) here's my own - I will be in England from Dec 16th until the 30th. I should still be able to get on and post, but probably not more than once every two days or so. If it ends up that I'm slowing things down, obviously feel free to DMPC me.
Azeban |
In England? You're coming to visit me? Hehehehe...new toys.
If you're in the Bath/Bristol area it's entirely possible that you could kidnap me.
Guys, if I don't come back there's an 80% chance that Jon's responsible.
Victor Caligori |
Wow, Igor. That's really cool! Hope that all goes well for you =)
Well, as for me, I'm unemployed and have nothing to look forward to in life, so I'll probably only be slow posting over the three days surrounding Christmas. I do kind of have four different families that will want to see me, after all.
Jon, sorry to hear about your series of unfortunate (and messy) events. Glad you're doing better now. And please try not to kidnap Azeban. :P
And Azeban... damn, I'm jealous. I'd love to go to England. My dad's a Yorkshireman, and I have family all over the place there!
Igor. |
Thanks El. :)
This is quite the game as far as our reactions. No hardened warriors here! I'm loving it. By the time it's all over, Jon's going to have some seriously scarred (but, hopefully, seriously awesome) characters. :)

This is my second time going, but I haven't really been many other places. I'm at the age where everyone I know has either a) seen 7+ countries, b) owns a house, c) is married/has kids, or sometimes all of the above. It all depends in where your priorities lie, I guess. I'm considering moving out to England within a couple of years, so, there's that.

Yeah, I figured we're all still kinda, you know, kids. I've never played a character before who went from never having killed someone to shooting a gnome point blank in the face in 15 seconds. I plan on traumatising the hell out of Azeban for it.
Farash |
+1 to the "green"/fresh-faced warriors. Farash has read (slowly, with a finger on each word) a lot of pulp stuff and wants to be a hero, but he doesn't really understand exactly what that means, in the visceral, blood-spattered and sh7t-scared reality of combat, battle, war, adrenaline and maiming…
Sienna Six |
Sienna's brevity is part of her character. She sees no reason to use more words than necessary to get her point across. That, and her lack of empathy means that she comes off as a cold and aloof person.
There's also the fact she's technically only half a year old, and has knowledge but lacks understanding. She's like a child who can read the dictionary but has no context to ascribe to anything but the simplest words.
JonGarrett |
Since interest is lagging in both threads and I have some family matters to deal with, I'm gonna close both games. I may run an adventure path at some point in the next few weeks, as it'll mean less work for me, so keep an eye out if you enjoyed my GMing style.
