Swordstaff Magus Possibilites

Rules Questions

So I re-watched the Dragon Age 2 destiny trailer (Found Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlACgYHtWCI ) and I wanted to figure out how to make a character who fights like that. My initial thought was making a staff magus and either flavoring a normal quarterstaff to have one end with slashing damage or making an exotic double weapon with one end slashing and one end bludgeoning and saying any effects related to quarterstaff apply to this weapon. This makes sense in reality but it requires some house ruling.

The other option I thought of was making a normal magus but get the eldritch heritage: arcane feat at third level and making the arcane bond a guisarme or something. This would be mostly rules appropriate but requires a number of factors, It requires that an arcane bond can be used with spell combat (can't find rules saying yes or no specifically, it says light or one-handed only but the arcane bond could fudge that a bit, its interesting). It also requires that a magus can spell strike with a two handed weapon(again can't find the info) this might require less house ruling but it also feels more trolly and rules bendy.

What do you think? I think the first option would be the most balanced but it does require house ruling.

Liberty's Edge

My opinion is that it don't work with the magus abilities, but for a home game you can use Bladed brush, maybe with a Kensai:

Bladed Brush Combat

Note: This is associated with Shelyn

You know how to balance a polearm perfectly, striking with artful, yet deadly precision.

Prerequisite(s): Weapon Focus (glaive), must be a worshiper of the associated deity.

Benefit(s): You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a glaive sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon. When wielding a glaive, you can treat it as a one-handed piercing or slashing melee weapon and as if you were not making attacks with your off-hand for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a duelist’s or swashbuckler’s precise strike).

As a move action, you can shorten your grip on the glaive, treating it as though it lacked the reach weapon property. You can adjust your grip to grant the weapon the reach property as a move action.

Naginata + Spear Dancing Spiral + Quarterstaff Mastery.

The naginata is a sword on a staff, Spear Dancing Spiral lets you switch between reach and non-reach, TWF with the naginata, and apply quarterstaff feats. Quarterstaff Mastery allows you to use the naginata one-handed and treat the naginata as a one-handed weapon.

On the rounds you are one-handing the naginata, you can use spell combat.

Easiest path is probably Staff Magus archetype, using a quarterstaff until everything else comes online.

You'll want a Nimble Mithral breastplate, which counts as light armor and has no penalty for non-proficiency (0 ACP). This also aligns with the armor depicted in the trailer.

Prerequisite(s): Dex 15, Spear Dancing Style, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus with the chosen weapon.

Benefit(s): While using Spear Dancing Style, you gain the benefit of Weapon Finesse with the chosen weapon if it is appropriately sized for a creature of your size category. In addition, you can use any feat or ability that functions with a quarterstaff with your chosen weapon.

Benefit: By employing a number of different stances and techniques, you can wield a quarterstaff as a one-handed weapon. At the start of your turn, you decide whether or not you are going to wield the quarterstaff as a one-handed or two-handed weapon. When you wield it as a one-handed weapon, your other hand is free, and you cannot use the staff as a double weapon.

With Spear Dancing Spiral, all of the Staff Magus class abilities work with the naginata.
