Players Want to Confront the Government [SPOILERS]

Hell's Rebels

Right, so, may players are/were convinced that the entire AP is about going up against the government and fighting them every step of the way. After talking to them and letting them know that it's more about getting the support of the Kintargan citizens and helping people in bad situations most of them seem to pretty much understand that.
But one player is convinced that they're going to run around being a terrorist the entire time and somehow thinks that the Player's Guide says that that's what they should be doing. (He seems to not be getting it even when I tell him flat out what the AP is about and that his impression is wrong.)
We haven't started yet but will be very soon.

If they're still trying to go and kill everyone when the game starts any suggestions on how to gently let them know that it won't work and that if they draw too much attention to themselves Barzillai can send some of his stupidly high leveled henchmen after them?
Because, really, I don't want Barzillai to send a bunch of high level clerics and hellknights after them in the second book...

I had Thrune call down a flame strike during the opening set piece. Also, Nox regenerating a critical hit from a dagger like it is nothing is written into that scene. That got my players' attention.

Also, they have some common sense--they're first level. And I had Morgar be totally a Bro in favor of, like, sticking it to the Man, dude. Always good to have an NPC endorse the bad idea in a way that indicates it's a bad idea.

But, remember, you do want some direct action. If you go too far, they'll never do anything.

Good points! Thanks, RR.

I forgot about Nox and the dagger... hopefully that will make them aware, as well as the dottari not using lethal force will make them second guess trying to kill everything.
Good call on having Thrune use a power if he needs to and I appreciate the advice on Morgar and to not go too far.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It helped in our campaign to replace the Dottari with Hellknight armigers as opponents in some combat situations, and to add some scenes were the Dottari were shown to be not all bad, but mostly just trying to make the best of a tough situation.

I had a mixed force of Hellknight armigers (on horseback) and dottari at the Aria park protest (along with the Chelish Citizens' Group as the PC's opponents as per the book), and made it clear that the dottari were trying to use non-lethal force or just pushed people away. When the PCs had decided to flee I had the Hellknight armigers charge their horses over people (not the PCs) indiscriminately, and while the PCs fled they could hear them running people down in the streets. That made the Hellknights - who came with Barzillai - the main focus for my PCs' ire, and portrayed the local dottari in a better light.

I like the idea of the dottari as 'just doing their jobs' and the armigers as the more brutal troops!

I've been debating with myself as to if the dottari were mostly replaced with Barzillai's hand-picked people or not. Now I'm figuring I'll have most of them the way you describe with the new commander being more brutal.

If I remember right, Barzillai replaced the leaders of the dottari with his people, but the rank and file are the same as before.

I gave the PCs a side mini mission where they found some of the disaffected dottari (both leaders that had been kicked out and those still in it who were uncomfortable with how things were going) and got their cooperation with the rebellion.

Th Duxutas being appointed by Barzillai is heavily implied but not actually stated. But it makes sense that he appointed her as well as replaced some of the higher ranking dottari. I'm going to attempt to show that they're enforcing the law and that others are abusing their power.

I like the idea of a side mission to get some of the more moral dottari get on the side of the Ravens.
Thanks!
