Do I roll 1 or 2 extra dice?

Hi Paizo,

I've played about 5 scenarios so far of ROTRL, and think I might be playing the fundamental Weapon cards incorrectly.

Currently when I use a weapon, I add 2 EXTRA dice to my rolls: eg. "my strength die plus 1d10"

So I end up rolling my Strength die (as you always get that as a base), and then I roll another strength die (no +1/etc. modifiers on the 2nd roll), and then whatever extra die (or dice) the card indicates as well.

Am I doing this wrong? Do the cards mean I'm supposed to just roll my Strength die once, and then the extra die, rather than 2 total Strength die and the extra die?

I scoured your forums but couldn't find an answer.

Short answer, you don't get the original strength die.

A weapon (among other cards) DEFINES the combat check. It tells you exactly what to roll.

You only get your Strength or Melee by default if NOTHING ELSE defines the combat check.

So, If a weapon says "Strength or Melee + 1d10", you get the better of your Strength Skill or Melee Skill, and 1d10.

If you have no cards that define your combat checks, THEN you can just use the better of your Strength or Melee skills.

Since you're a little behind the curve (starting with the original RotR game), you should be aware that a lot of minor things have changed since then in the rules and their wording.

While original RotR cards (weapons and combat spells in particular) would say "For your Combat check, add your Strength or Melee DIE", nowadays these cards say "..add your Strength or Melee SKILL". The distinction being pretty important since your "skill" also includes all you static modifiers.
