It's a simple question. Can an Aether kinetecist use Spark of Life to create an Aether elemental? They exist and the wording of the ability makes it clear to me that they can. However since it mentions that it uses summon Monster to achieve this effect it brings into disrepute the ability to create an Aether elemental.
I can't find anything on the subject and it's infuriating. This is probably because it's obviously to most that this ability works one way or the other.
It's quite tricky, and you might have to ask the GM to let you summon aether elementals.
Wood and Void kineticists probably have it rough with this ability as well...
I'd say no, aether elementals are ridiculous. Always invisible flying critters, pass.
I would say that they definitively can; Summon Monster IV has Elemental, Medium on it's list, not individual Elementals. A Medium Aether Elemental falls under the category of Elemental, Medium, so you can summon it with Summon Monster without issue.

Still absolutley no resolution. Is this really going to come down to a RAI vs. RAW argument every time i try to use this ability just because the designers don't know how to be specific!?
I'd sooner just acoid the ability. It's very aggrivating to someone who is in love with this class that they suffer so much because of a simple thing like bad writing.
As it stands, I'd say you can. Although I could swear I saw a post disallowing Aether elementals in PFS. I'm just bitter there's no void elementals.

I am bitter there are no void, wood, life, time, etc. elementals.
I would say yes, since both the description of the ability and the spell it is based on would allow it.
This has been asked a number of times before. I imagine chaokineticists would summon negative energy elementals, otherwise known to orc-kind as MURDER ELEMENTALS!!!
