If I take Animal Ally feat at level 5, which has a small list of animals that I can choose from, then I Multiclass to something like Hunter, may I switch to an animal that's not on the Animal Ally list while still getting its benefits?

The feat answers your question

Sorry, I see your dilemma. I would say if you get another animal companion from another source later that is an animal on the list, then they stack. If you get one that is not on the list, you have two separate animal companions that don't stack.

That said, the feat present an inconsistency. You can't take the feat if you already have an animal companion, but it allows you to get an animal companion after you take the feat?

Most people I have talked to, and rules discussions I have seen tend towards the interpretation that if the animals are not on both lists, they don't stack. So if you took levels in Hunter, and kept your animal companion as a Badger, the levels stack. But if you took a large cat as your animal companion, only the Hunter levels would count. There is a Faq or 2 floating around that lean toward this as well.

Either it's on both lists and levels stack, or you get a companion not on the animal ally list at your hunter level only.
Many people won't allow you to double count your companion class levels, only allowing your non-companion class levels count for animal ally.
