Magic Item: Favored Form Ring

Homebrew and House Rules

Favored Form Ring
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th
Slot ring; Price 11700 gp; Weight -
Description
An ornately sculpted thick brass ring recalling the carved icons seen in temples and shrines. Common examples are; trailing hummingbirds, playful kittens, grasping monkeys, cavorting raccoons, dancing rabbits, queued skunks, entwined songbirds, braided snakes. The ring leaves a slight mark of verdigris where it is worn. A ring is usually given to a favored worshiper but they show up in magic shops now and then.
The ring confers to one wearer within the day it's magical abilities; a +1 deflection bonus to armor class which may be upgraded to +5, the ability to talk with animals matching the attuned animal type, and the marvelous power by giving the ring a twist to assume the form of the attuned animal up to twice per day. This allows the gifted devout follower to accomplish the little tasks the temple needs done without undue notice.
The attuned animal is a tiny animal and set when the ring is created. The form can be changed via repairing magic items. An unworn ring has an AC of 11 (size fine), hardness 14, 21 hit points, Break DC 26 or classically Hard:10, HP:1, Break DC 22.
beast shape II 4@10 (see polymorph subschool) retain type, tiny size animal(one form only) with ability for verbal components, Dur:10min(D).
Construction Requirements Forge Ring, beast shape II, shield of faith, speak with animals, CL 10; Cost 5850 gp

Here, it's more like this:

Favored Form Ring
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th
Slot ring; Price (see below); Weight --
Description
This thick brass ring is ornately carved with a specific tiny animal in motion and religious iconography, and regardless of the polish and care to the ring, leaves a green mark on the wearer where the ring rests. A favored form ring bestows the following abilities to the wearer:

  • +1 deflection bonus to armor class
  • speak with animals, only with the species depicted on the ring
  • twice per day, the wearer can assume the form of the species depicted on the ring for up to ten minutes (per beast shape II)

Construction Requirements Forge Ring, beast shape II, shield of faith, speak with animals; Cost (see below)

Figuring the cost of the ring, you have the following:
+1 deflection bonus to AC (2,000 gp)
beast shape II, CL 10, 2x day (12,000gp)
speak with animals, continuous, one species only (4,000gp, arbitrary to 2,000gp)

So 12,000gp + (2,000gp*1.5) + (2,000gp*1.5), or a base cost of 18,000 gp. Given that the ring lets you assume a tiny animal twice per day and speak with that animal continuously, this might be a very fair price.

That means the +2 AC version would be 27,000gp by raw math, then +3/39,000gp, +4/53,000gp, and +5/71,000gp.

this is the homebrew messageboard...

in the write up I tried not to make a powers list, so just a choice there. Otherwise the write up would be as KitsuneSoup suggested.

Physical data was added as that is useful information that would take too long to generate during play. I understand it's not normally stated. Classical hardness and that using cost on the weapons cost was used (eh, homebrew).

Lastly, adding the vocalizations for spell casting seemed to clarify that position for this divine style item and fit with the discount.

A single form was taken as a 0.25 multiplier as it's a considerable restriction from _any_ animal form which is normally what the spell(s) would allow. This is applied to both beast shape and speak with animals.

(4*10*1800{cmd}*2/5 +1*1*2000{continuous}*2{as dur is CL min}*1.5{addt'l powers})*.25 +2000*1.5 =
(28800 +6000)*.25 +3000 =11700

It's not as limiting as you think, because you are specifically creating an item that functions exactly as desired. The fact that I can "only" assume a form that can fly, gets a bonus to DEX and AC is not limiting enough for a discount. It's very like saying that another ring "only" lets you turn into a panther, not a bear, or "only" a red dragon, not a blue dragon. It shouldn't be discounted for unique magic item creation.

Only being allowed to speak with one specific type of animal is a severe limitation on the spell. But if you created a unique spell that let you turn into a bat when cast, it would probably be the same level as the minimal level of the appropriate beast shape spell.

thanks, so editing I come up with something that might convey the idea in a standard format including the flavor text <g>...

Favored Form Ring
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 10th
Slot ring; Price 11,700 gp; Weight -
Description
A thick brass ring ornately carved with a tiny animal species in active poses and religious iconography of the associated deity. Common animal effigies are; trailing hummingbirds, playful kittens, grasping monkeys, cavorting raccoons, dancing rabbits, queued skunks, entwined songbirds, braided snakes. The ring leaves a slight mark of verdigris where it is worn. A favored form ring bestows the following abilities on one wearer per day:

  • +1 deflection bonus to armor class
  • beast shape II, CL 10 (depicted species only, 2/day)
  • speak with animals (with depicted species only)
This ring is usually given to devout follower to complete the little tasks that the faith needs accomplished without undue notice. The animal form speaks in a high pitched mimicry of the wearers voice even if the animal would not normally be able to do so.
Construction Requirements Forge Ring, beast shape II, shield of faith, speak with animals; Cost 5850 gp

I was also wondering what it would cost to make a similar item, a slotted item that let you polymorph into a Giant Octopus per beast shape II with a command. I don't agree that it should be cost the same as just beast shape 2 on command, as you lose out on a lot of versatility because you can't turn into something small, stealthy and flying.

There's a big difference between "only a panther, and not a bear" and "only a panther, not a bat or shark."

There has to be some sort of discount, otherwise you might as well have it just be Beast Shape II twice per day.

The item needs to specify what level of the beast shape spell it is emulating. I know you have it in the construction requisistes, but it needs to be spelled out in the effects as well. in the language "as per the Beast Shape 2 spell."

okay... as you can see in the math section for the power on Beast Shape II (I really dislike the roman numeral system) I gave a 75% discount.
WHOA you may say! lol...
I've played Champions for years and you deal with discounts on almost every character design. DnD is a bit rougher and I've played it for many years more. So...
For going from 25(practical)-100 forms down to 1 form, it should be about 10-12.5% of the original cost.
For what I did with flight and speech for 25% of original cost is about right for the DnD system.
You do have to be careful with this as some players will try to minimize the cost down to 10GP and that's just not gonna work in DnD.

Commands can be verbal, gestures, or doing something special that's NOT in the usage of the power (as that's use activated). Originally I had the user twist the ring. I dumped that in the description as it wasn't essential and I didn't need to press the point.

The assumption is magic item powers are done at minimal level. So you don't have to state the level if that's the case. Certainly that's true for continuous powers as you want to keep the cost reasonable. It DOES make a difference when you are dispelling an effect (I've run in high level games). I stated the caster level(CL) on Beast Shape II as it's not the minimum and that drives up the CL on the top of the description. You need only state the highest level required.

Sometimes the duration is too short to be practical or a bit oddball, so in this case I went from 7 min to 10 min and paid the price to do that. Every GM can track 10min a lot easier than 7min...
Next, when doing a task you have to get in, do your thing, and then get out, so that's 2 uses per day. Otherwise you are creating trouble for the user who is gonna get stuck.

I'm a nice guy and making a good item that's pretty much a spell in a can, so I don't mind posting it. I'm really just working on format and what people think is acceptable text.
This item also mimics another not so well priced item in print, so it provides GMs with an option.

Liberty's Edge

Posting your item on the Blazing 9 thread in RPGSuperstar forum might give you even more of the feedback you are looking for ;-)

you may see some entries this year <g>

Shadow Lodge

There should be some discount, but 75% is too much.

You're thinking about all the possible forms you could take with Beast Shape II, but really there are only two main functions of that spell: combat and scouting. The ring allows scouting, so that's half the function of the spell.

And yes, there is some loss of function in not being able to change the extra movement modes, senses, or cosmetic details of the form selected. But the person making or buying the ring will probably choose a generally useful form (such as a songbird for flight, or a bat for flight and blindsense) and ability to speak while in animal form will for most users be a bigger advantage than the disadvantage of not being able to turn into a fish.

So at most I'd give a 50% discount to the shapeshifting part of this item.

The discount on Speak With Animals could reasonably be more significant because the limitation is more limiting. While in most situations it will be equally useful to turn into a cat or fox, in most situations it will not be equally useful to talk to cats or foxes.
