Rise of the Runelords: Wizard Edition! [GMs only please]

Recruitment

Not 100% sure if a player recruiting for a GM is cool on this board, but someone else is doing it and getting good results so I figured I'd give it a go. Without further ado, behold my request.

Four Wizards of largely disparate upbringing, One man, two women and something not exactly either of the two have recently moved to Sandpoint as a group of friends. Three of the four have personal ties to the place, while the last is an outlander, having joined the group of friends during their time together in Minata as they all completed their Wizard training. Having gone their separate ways to establish themselves after completing the move, the group promised to reunite at the upcoming Swallowtail Festival.

What initially began as a thought experiment to prove the viability of a group of four wizards playing from level 1 in an adventure path has since blossomed in me as an adventure I'd deeply love to play out.

I've only read the Player's Guide [to the Anniversary Edition mind], my last GM mentioned this Swallowtail Festival in his initial- and only- post in the campaign - so I'm assuming it's where things start up. If I am mistaken we could always do whatever might be appropriate before that event as solo characters or pairs. [Or I can retcon their appointed meeting, whatever works for you.]

As far as GM-ship goes, I ask for three things.
1st: Reliability- obviously life can stick its nose into our scheduling and screw things up, but I'm doing my very best to post within 24 hours of a reply [and an additional 24 hours at the very latest] and would greatly appreciate similar commitment [though dependent on schedules the committed pace might be a bit slower.]

2nd: RAW to RAI- I'm asking that the GM change as little as possible in the campaign, for the sake of making it as accurate an experiment as possible. This means not adjusting the encounters for the sake of the party, neither powered up nor powered down. Note: one thing I do ask here is a bit of leniency/reasonability when it comes to feats/spells/magic items. Now and then there's a piece of published content which isn't worded in a manner so as to actually do what it's intended to do. The Undead Master feat and Spell-Storing Armor immediately come to mind as examples. In these cases and similar, I'd greatly appreciate a fair interpretation rather than hard RAW.

3rd: Story Focus- My nature as a roleplayer is one focused on the story, despite my tendency towards optimization. Please provide an environment where I can really get into these characters and bring them to life. This may sound strange given that there are four of them, but my background in roleplaying is from Forum Play By Post wherein it was common for a player to have many characters in the same game/world [though admittedly these characters nearly never interacted with one-another, keeping player-character-character knowledge and personality distinct were still critical skills.]

I know I'm asking a lot, but I believe I have a lot to bring to the table and can help forge an awesome story together with a GM, despite the pre-constructed nature of an Adventure Path.

As an aside, I am willing to run a campaign for my GM in this regard, though I must warn you my style of GMing is a bit off the wall, very instinctive and reactive and I expect a lot of creative spark and world-building out of my players. Also my schedule at this time is such that I'm probably better off not GMing and Participating in games at the same time, so it may be better to have me owe you an IOU than to ask me to run for you simultaneously. [A look at my posting history will show that I've been a regular on these boards for a long time, and while I may take a break from them for a period I always come back.]

Regardless of your decision, thank you very much for reading my request. I hope the rest of your day treats you well.

Who would the other three wizards be played by?

I will. It's a single-player campaign, which has its flaws but does allow for much faster story progression than attempting to coordinate four separate players.

Hey! I'd said this in the "Let's Make a Deal" thread as well, but I thought that I could make the offer here again: I am new to PbP GMing, and am looking to gain experience in this area. While I am not experienced in this type of roleplaying, you can be assured that I will be trying my absolute hardest to provide an engaging and consistent roleplay.

I have read through your three main concerns of this game and can understand them all completely. If we can work something out for this campaign, I will uphold your requests to the best of my ability.

If you wish to find a more experienced GM, I completely understand! This campaign is obviously important to you, and quality is important in all things held dear. Thanks for your time, Kryt!

I am VERY interested in this project. Sign me up. How shall I apply formally? What do you want from your applicants?

I'm not opposed to the offer Sunstone. As a new GM, do you have Rise of the Runelords? An entire adventure path is a pretty big commitment [though I doubt we'd move through a book more quickly than a month, so if you wanted to you could acquire them one at a time.]

Lets give it another day or so to see who else is interested [and if they might have some interesting feedback for whoever might end up taking the job.]

At the very least you may want to choose to follow a few PbP campaigns as they unfurl [rather than marathoning ones that have already been completed] to get a feel for it.

EDIT @ Mowque: Basically just agreeing to my three requests and being committed to completing it. We can either use this thread [or you can create a Campaign Discussion Thread] to sort out the exact details of the PCs prior to the beginning.

I own the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition, but never got to GM it due to issues involving face-to-face meetup times.

As for stalking following PbPs, I'm already on it.

On the subject of discussing characters, James Jacobs is on record stating that the Samsaran Mystic Past Life ability should count Alchemists as Arcane Casters. Are you cool with that Mowque?

This question also extends to any other interested parties.

Absolutely!

Granted, isn't this whole campaign about using wizards as the PCs? Where does the alchemist come into play?

Forgive me if I'm missing something here.

EDIT:

Oh, oops, I get it. You're wanting to know if the extracts can be used as spells? Sure, as long as it ties in with the character backstory. I would expect a character gaining extracts to only be gaining extracts as they were an alchemist in their past life.

One of my wizards is a Samsaran using Mystic Past Life to have a couple [literally two] Alchemist-exclusive Extracts as spells. And to access some condition removal spells that would otherwise have to come from Witch for an Arcane Casting Samsaran.

This is actually the one I mentioned that's neither man nor woman, she's... quite literally a man trapped in a woman's body. [Only had one past life thus far, a gruff Dwarven Alchemist with a passion for brewing beer and distilling liquor. This is her first life as a Samsaran.]

Right now it's looking likely that Mowque will be the GM [provided he agrees to the three requests.]

If you're planning to stalk this campaign anyway Sunstone, I'd be honored to have you as a reserve GM, in case circumstances force the primary GM to quit.

I'd love to be the reserve GM, but to a point. If something happens and you're only a book or two in, I can fill in wherever Mowque left off! With this said, however, I'd feel a bit bummed if you were on the fifth book or something of the sort and called me in, as I would only be telling the end of the story; not aiding in any of the climactic build up. Plus, though I plan to stalk this AP for quite a while, simply stalking the story with no participation may not hold my interest for the time it would take to get to a later book. Forgive me if this comes as a hinderence.

In short, I really hope this works out splendidly for you and Mowque, but if you find out early on that the arrangement won't work at all, I will be right there to step in!

Sounds good to me Sunstone, thank you very much for your interest.

Right, one other requirement I neglected to list [because I always take it for granted these days] is Retraining. It's part of the rules now and I really don't want to play without having it available.

Before I commit, I do have few questions...

1. How do you plan on RPing four interacting characters and staying interested in it? Just nto sure how that will work for you. typing a conversation between the PCs will be a tedious and ultimately pointless task for you? Sure you don't just want two or three? might easier RP-wise.

2. How much wiggle room do I have in following the AP. Do you want it exact or can I toss in a few extra NPCs and scenes?

1: I've done it before many times. I get very much into character, one character at a time and then I just flip a switch between them. Like I said I'm a very story-oriented player and this is no issue for me.

EDIT: as an example, my main character in a forum game I once ran [it was an open-form forum game, the type where the person running the game is mostly just administering the site not actually GMing] had three pets each with distinct personalities and objectives who occasionally disagreed with or... creatively reinterpreted their 'master' [more like friend]'s instructions.

EDIT 2: when I say pets in this example I mean intelligent companions according to the game rules, not animals or other nonsentient creatures.

2: In general I'd prefer you stick to it as close as possible for the sake of the thought experiment, but if you feel it will improve the story feel free to improvise a bit.

I would like to request any changes you make be focused around Story not Challenge though, if that makes sense. Don't worry about taming things down or ramping them up relevant to the party's strengths and weaknesses.

EDIT for clarity: obviously you want to set any changes you do make to a roughly appropriate CR. I meant please don't alter the adventures/encounters for the sake of challenge. [Hopefully I'm clearly communicating my meaning xD]

So Mowque, which would you want me to use? 20 point buy or 15?

15. I usually say 20 but your teamwork and party synergy is going to be off the charts, of course. I will make the game thread in a bit.

Bear with me for the first few combats till I get a feel for how you do. My past players always said that my combats were 'really great' so don't be surprised if I pump up the basic AP combats with a bit more flavor and punch, are you ok with that? I don't mean harder, I mean more interesting.

Four wizards should be very interesting. What sort of builds are you looking at?

More flavor is more awesome.

My basic builds:

'Alchy' [kind of stands for both Alchemist and Alcoholic :P] A Samsaran whose past life was a dwarven Alchemist with a passion for Brewing and Distilling alcohol, who serves as sort of a medic and general support. For now that includes alchemical items but at some point its likely to transition mostly into potions.

'Ninja' A Transmuter Scrollmaster slightly oriented towards stealth and physical combat [supplemented by alchemical gear at least in the early phases.

'Slacker' A Sin Conjurer Spirit Binder with a melee oriented familiar.

'Face' A Necromancer human child of two Dhampir who's learned to be pretty good at dealing with people.

I've never run though Runelords before and I am giving it a look. Definitely more 'primitive' then some of Pazio's later work. What attracts you to it?

Part of it was because that was the suggestion of the person I was preparing to take this challenge with before.

Now though? The setting [small town beset by various dangers, leading up to some sort of ancient mystery] really appeals to me.

EDIT: so are you looking through the original or the Anniversary Edition? It's the AE that I read the Player's Guide for and was anticipating, though I'm not opposed to the original.

If I had my choice I'd run another path, but you seem pretty committed to Runelords. Thanks for the suggestion of the AE, I am looking through it now. Give me a bit to finally decide if I want to run this or not. It wouldn't be fair to say yes then flake out after a week or three.

I don't mind the odd set up (I love solo GMing), I just want to see if I care about this AP.

Do you mind?

Not at all. I'm kind of excited and not looking forward to needing to wait for a response xD, but I totally understand the need to look it over.

Just get back to me when you make your decision.

EDIT: here's hoping you don't feel the need to read the whole thing cover to cover xD, I'd definitely prefer that decision some time this evening or tomorrow morning.

EDIT 2: oh well, it does give me time to finetune the characters.

Game!

Heh I jumped straight into that thread to throw out some stuff and forgot to let you know I was doing so.

Odihnă is going up first, not sure who is coming after her.

Apparently Mowque withdrew. You're up Sunstone! [PM incoming so you'll know for sure.]

Since I got this background for Odihnă written up for Mowque I'll go ahead and post it here. The first couple paragraphs are abreviated due to frustration after a computer crash wiped out some work.

*****

Odihnă [named after Peace and Rest in Romanian, it's both a pun on her dhampir parents and their sincere desire for a peaceful easy life for their child.]

Raised wandering around the inner sea region, the family finally found a place they could call home in Sandpoint as Odihnă turned Eight years old.

Just in time, she got to meet a pair of younglings named Natsu and Hakan also interested in magic, forming bonds that would last a lifetime in the short year they had left before the pair were dragged away on their own journeys.

The years passed and Odihnă did her best to fit in with her peers, ‘playing’ with them while dedicating the bulk of her focus towards exploring her own arcane interests, both more socially acceptable magic and… despite her parents warnings and without their knowledge… the necromantic arts. After all they were both half undead anyway, what was so bad about the undead?

It was a delicate balance, involving herself among normal people whilst committing herself to her studies and seeking out what mentorship was available in such a small town, but the girl managed alright. A full six years later Odihnă received a letter- the last of many- requesting she come join her old friends in a magic academy in Minata.

Thrilled by the opportunity to rejoin her old friends and seek out more advanced instruction, the girl wasted no time packing her bags and booking a ship. Another six years later she once again found herself back in Sandpoint, a full fledged Necromancer. What she would do with her developed skills and how her parents would react was anyone’s guess, but she was a full grown woman now and prepared to deal with whatever came her way.

While Hakan and Natsu went on to explore their Shoanti Heritage for another two years and their Samsaran friend Bryggeri- formed in Minata- got into the local tavern scene, Odihnă ingratiated herself with a few local nobles, building connections.

So what about you Sunstone? 20 point buy or 15?

Well damn, color me interested for sure lol. I guess I can throw my hat in if Sun backs out, but just the idea of you and only you playing... That actually makes me curious and interested in seeing how that would play out lol. Honestly, it kinda makes me want to do this, as this seems like it would be a hell of a challenge lol.

It's certainly been a challenge filling out all the roles exactly as I want them.

What's funny though is in my research I've determined that I could have put together a team twice as powerful while being restricted to just Wizards, Witches and Sorcerers, all full Arcane Casters. The archetypes introduce so much interesting stuff, but there's a limit to the diversity available within a single class.

That being said though, if this experiment goes well in the future I'd like to try my hands at an All Cleric team as well.

I just made mention in the Deal thread that this should be a thing lol. It could be an actual challenge amongst people. Who could create the best story, would could make the most balanced party, who could have fewer characters killed... You know what I mean?

I certainly do know what you mean. Barring a killer GM or some REALLY bad dice rolls I don't anticipate any character deaths past level 1-2 but who knows for sure.

You'd be surprised. I almost had a TPK towards the end of Book 1 because the party made a few bad decisions.

I very well may be surprised. These are all really smart characters though [at least three out of four are starting with 18 intelligence, with the possible exception of one of them, and that was the plan even on 15 point buy] so at least I'll be well justified in making the best damned decisions I can come up with xD.

Y'know KLS, I'm totally down to discuss my characters with you if you're interested. Helps me sort of cement them in my mind and it might entertain you since you seem so interested.

If you scroll up a little to my really big post [8 small to moderate paragraphs] you'll see the background for my necromancer.

I'm fine with that. Go ahead and shoot me a pm and we'll go from there. I just really find the concept of playing a full campaign in this fashion interesting. I've done stuff of creating basic builds to test out encounters before, but nothing to weave actual story.
