Basically, I've made a sorcerer with the options taken in title, and I was wondering about a corner case I encountered with the level 2 spell "frost fall".
Freezing spells:
Freezing Spells (Su): Whenever a creature fails a saving throw and takes cold damage from one of your spells, it is slowed (as the slow spell) for 1 round. Spells that do not allow a save do not slow creatures. At 11th level, the duration increases to 1d4 rounds.Frost fall:
The area of this spell is covered in chilling frost, dealing 2d6 points of cold damage to all creatures within it. Creatures that the spell initially damages must succeed at a Fortitude save or become staggered for 1 round. The area remains chilled for the spell’s duration. Any creature that starts your turn within the spell’s area takes 1d6 points of cold damage (Fortitude saving throw for half) but does not become staggered even on a failed saving throw.
Now, the thing is, the conditions state that:
the creature must fail a saving throwthe creature must take cold damage
now, are these two requirements part of the same "event", per se?
For example, the frost fall spell does deal cold damage, but the cold damage itself has no saving throw. The spell does have a saving throw, but it's for a condition that is separate from the cold damage. For this part, does it trigger freezing spells? I am inclined to think so, since freezing spells only requires that both those things happen within the spell.
Similarly, within the same example, do delayed effects also trigger freezing spells? Within the very same spell, frost fall has additional rounds of throw-halved damage. Would this trigger the slow effect? I am also inclined to believe so since it's a spell I cast dealing cold damage and involving a saving throw.
However, both of these seem to have room for argument, so I wanted to post this and ask what you guys think.
Both events meet the requirements to the letter.
Also, consider the Elemental Spell Metamagic for use with Freezing Spells. All the ability cares about is that you inflict cold damage, so any spell that deals damage and involves a save will work.
