Tiefling and Assimar Variants

3.5/d20/OGL

I see all the variants, but what do they mean?

Like I know a Demon Spawn, would mean what, the parent is a Demon and the other parent is a Devil? Or one is a human, while the other is a Demon. And is a Tiefling born instantly from a Devil parent and a human parent, or is it years of breeding? I need to know what each of them are. Like, I looked up Div, and it says Genie, but that is all it says. I don't know what some of these creatures are without looking them up, and even then it is confusing. When I pick a tiefling/assimar heritage, what does it mean about the race, and how they breed, other than the mechanical stuff which is a given. Also, what exactly is a Tiefling/Assimar. Direct breeding, or years of breeding, etc? I ask this stuff for roleplay reasons. Like it would be silly to pick a div-spawn Tiefling and then pick abyssal bloodline if I pick sorcerer. If I pick div-spawn, I'd pick div bloodline, or one of the 4 elemental genies, like Shaitan, djin, or something else my ancestors may have breed with. Or elemental bloodline could suggest any outsider.

And what bloodlines would be appropriate for each variant of Tiefling/Assimar? Including the original.

1) It's "Aasimar". A race name that gets mangled enough as it is, but still...

2) Teiflings and Aasimars come about however you need them to, and it can be any combination of what you listed above. Do you want your parents to have been a human and a devil? Then that's what they were. What about two humans with not a devilish trait in them, your fiendish ancestry having entered your bloodline seven times seven generations ago? That's good, too. Or a human and an Aasimar? Still good.

For that matter, Tieflings and Aasimars are the outsider-blended mortal races spawned from any of the other races in the game. Your parents were a halfling and an Idylkin Aasimar? You're an Aasimar that just has the Medium trait traded in for Small Size, -2 Str +2 Dex. Besides the size category (which of course only applies if you're not Medium), your Tiefling-or-Aasimar traits override what you got from your mortal heritage (an Elf-Tiefling might have pointed ears, but his hearing's just as bad as every other Tiefling, excepting Tiefling variants that have superior hearing).

3) If you want to have multiple bloodlines in your ancestry, there's no real reason why you can't. Five generations ago, a Demon showed up in your family line. Your parents are a human and a Devil-Tiefling. What are you? Whatever you want to be.

A Devil-Tiefling Infernal Sorcerer is an option.

A Demon-Tiefling Abyssal Sorcerer is an option.

A Devil-Tiefling Abyssal Sorcerer is an option.

A Demon-Tiefling Infernal Sorcerer is an option.
