Unspecified healing / burying from discards / deck

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Two related questions (and a more general query):

1) If a card (or other effect) like Sacred Prism allows you to reshuffle (x) cards from your discards, without specifying that they are random (the way cure does), does that mean you get to choose which cards?

2) If a card like Blood of Eustoyriax lets you bury (x) cards from your deck, without specifying that they are the top cards (the way something like Carrion Golem does), does that mean you get to choose which cards?

More broadly, if some feature (cards being chosen randomly, or off the top of your deck, etc.) is called out on certain cards, should we assume that things only work that way when it is specifically called out, or are there default assumptions for how to interact with each game area (hand/discards/displayed/deck/box) that are sometimes spelled out for clarity, but will sometimes left off for space/formatting reasons?

One possible suggestion for increased clarity: if something is reminder-text, rather than necessary rules text, you could use slightly different formatting (italics, parentheses) the way MtG does to make that clear.

If it does not say random, then you can choose which one(s).

Okay, that's a bit different. If it says "Bury (x) cards from your deck" then it is from the top of your deck. You don't get to delve into the deck to pick which ones. If a card says "Bury (x) cards" then it means you get to pick which ones from your hand.

Back during Rise of the Runelords, Vic stated that they were not going to use symbols or nomenclature on the cards (like Trample, Phasing, etc. So you probably won't see italicized text for certain formatting. Italics are usually used for flavor text.

And yes, when they say random, they mean random. If it does not say random, then you get to choose. And this is from your hand or discard pile. When it comes to your deck, it almost always means "off the top of your deck". If it does not mean that, then it will specify. So saying "Discard (x) cards from the top of your deck" means the same thing as "Discard (x) cards from your deck". They probably need to be worded the same.

For #1 you can for sure choose the cards you want to shuffle back from your discard pile because you're always allowed to look through your discard pile.

For #2, I'm not actually sure on that. There are no rules in the rulebook that cover this scenario; on one hand since it doesn't say "random" you get to choose. On the other you aren't allowed to look through your character deck unless a card specifically allows it (pg 10 of WotR rulebook). I don't personally view "bury 1d4-1 cards from your deck" as specifically allowing you to look through your character deck.

That's the point. If it doesn't specifically tell you to search your deck for something, then Discarded/Buried/Played cards come from the top of your deck. (Obviously powers that work off the bottom of the deck are applicable but we're talking "in general".)
