Islands of the Damned and Shipwrecks

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hey, so I started the Price of Infamy, finished the first scenario, but loooking ahead to Islands of the Damned it lists the Henchman as Shipwreck and Vrykolakas. Correct me if I'm wrong, but normally you'd add henchman from the list in order until you run out, right, but there are so many shipwrecks (8 I think) you'd never get to the Vrykolakas even in a 6 player game! I don't see any special rule for set-up, but the text on the scenario does seem to imply that you'd only add one Shipwreck. Curious if I missed something, or if this is what's intended.

Thanks!

You add one of each henchman except the last one listed, that one you add as many copies as you need to get to 1 villain/henchmen per location. So it will be 1 shipwreck, and multiple Vrkolakas.

Make a stack of cards starting with the villain(s) and then add henchmen, working from the top of the list down, until your stack has as many cards as you have locations. Use multiple copies of the henchman at the bottom of the list as needed. For example, if you have 5 locations and your scenario card lists Adaro Barbarian as the villain and Enemy Ship and Hammerhead Sharks as henchmen, you’ll make a stack of 5 cards: Adaro Barbarian, Enemy Ship, and 3 Hammerhead Sharks.

Aha, thanks! I thought I must have read something wrong since I've had this issue before.

While I'm here, there's something else that usually gives me pause: when you encounter a monster/henchman/villain with a check-to-defeat that's not combat (like the Arcane 15 check to defeat Isawyn the Diva), this isn't considered a combat check for the purposes of playing other cards but it does do damage if you fail, correct?

Thanks again!

Correct. You take damage for failing to defeat any monster (not barriers). That damage is Combat damage unless you are instructed otherwise.

S&S Rulebook p13 wrote:
Take Damage, If Necessary. If you fail a check to defeat a monster, it deals an amount of damage to you equal to the difference between the difficulty to defeat the monster and your check result. Unless the card specifies otherwise, this damage is Combat damage. For example, if the difficulty to defeat a monster is 10 and the result of your check is 8, the monster deals 2 Combat damage to you (see Taking Damage, below).

Notice the example doesn't mention what kind of check you failed. Just that it was a monster and you failed it.

So the Arcane 15 check to defeat Isawyn the Diva is a non-combat Arcane check, but failing it will deal you Combat damage (unless something on the card says it is Force, or Fire, or Acid damage).

Great, thanks again!
