So, early firearms use either bullets and black powder OR alchemical cartridges. Advanced firearms use metal cartridges. Do metal cartridges come in the various special varieties that their early alchemical cartridges come in (dragon's breath, entangling, etc.)? If so, how do you price them, the same or +3 gp? If not, can advanced firearms use alchemical cartridges?
Edit:
What about pitted bullets? Are metal cartridges the ONLY thing that advanced firearms use?

I interpreted the rules to mean that Metal cartridges replaced the Paper Alchemical Cartridge only, so they only come with a choice of bullet or pellets. Also, special Alchemical cartridges can only be used with any weapon with the scatter quality (with the exception of the Flare cartridge [increases misfire for a non-scatter weapon]), so the modern shotgun could use special alchemical Cartridges and there would be no adjustment to the price, they are used as is.
Since a bullet only costs 1 gp, I would take the difference in cost if a special bullet were desired. So, a metal cartridge with a pitted bullet would cost 19 gp, adamantine would be 75.

In my campaign I changed this around quite a bit. All guns fire cartridges. Alchemical cartridges are only used for scatter guns and charge cartridges are used for all other guns or scatter guns firing solid slugs or pellets. There are three sizes of charge cartridge (pistol, rifle and shotgun).
The 'bullets' are called caps, since they are attached to the charge cartridge like a cap. They may be either pellets or bullets of various materials (adamantine, silver or standard) and can have a modifier based on type (standard, pellet or slug) and, for bullets only, a modifier based on quality [not to be confused with masterwork] of the ammunition (armor piercing, expanding or pitted). A character with the gunsmithing feat can attach the caps to the charges themselves. Without the gunsmithing feat, the crafter needs to do this at the point of purchase. This allows a character with the gunsmithing feat to be a bit more flexible in the ammunition they wish to use by modifying it in the field and they can purchase the charge cartridges and caps separately.
