Wands, Scrolls and Spell Resistance

Rules Questions

This might be obvious, but I can't seem to find an answer to this question.

When someone uses a wand or a scroll against a creature that has Spell Resistance, what is the caster level check one uses?

Does a character use his or her own caster level, or the caster level of the wand or scroll?

Thanks in advance!

Grand Lodge

The caster level of the item without benefit from feats, racial traits or similar character abilities.

Silver Crusade

Correct, caster level of the wand/scroll unless you have a special ability that says otherwise. And unless it's otherwise mentioned, you usually assume that a wand or scroll's caster level is the minimum required to cast that spell.

The item. If you want to use your caster level then you need a staff.

Typically that is true, but some items are created at a greater caster level than the minimum. Some Chronicles give access to items like this.

Yes, a higher than minimum caster level can provide various benefits depending on the type of item, as well as increased cost. I don't think the question was PFS specific.

Okay, thanks everyone!

What is the rule reference? I couldn't seem to find a clear rule about how to adjudicate wands and scrolls anywhere.

You always use the caster level of whoever is casting the spell. That would be the creator of the item. That is why if you use a higher caster level to create wands and scrolls it will increase the price. If you could use your own caster level then people would just buy the cheapest version and use their own caster levels. When you use a scroll or wand the spells have been precast. You are just activating the item.

Table: Scrolls gives sample prices for scrolls created at the lowest possible caster level for each spellcasting class. Note that some spells appear at different levels for different casters. The level of such spells depends on the caster scribing the scroll.

Now I will go to staves.

Quote:
Using Staves: Staves use the wielder’s ability score and relevant feats to set the DC for saves against their spells. Unlike with other sorts of magic items, the wielder can use his caster level when activating the power of the staff if it’s higher than the caster level of the staff. This means that staves are far more potent in the hands of a powerful spellcaster....
