Buff spellcasting questions

Rules Questions

Hello!

I'm sorry, but I realized now, that I can not understand how do most of buffs work. Can you answer some questions?

Spell: Prayer
40-ft burst centered on you.
Duration: 1 round/level

If spellcaster is dead after casting a spell, does it still have effect?
Does creatres that walk 45 feet from caster still have benefits from spell? What about foes?

And how actually we can guess does the spell still works after disabling spellcaster?

Thaks a lot!

If a spell has a duration such as Prayer as you quoted, then it goes on until it would end even if the caster "dies".

So if I set a fire, then fall over dead, the fire is still burning.

Likewise, this spell effects only those that are within that area once it is cast. After it's cast, they can move as close or as far as they want and still be under the effect until the duration runs out. Most standard buff spells will be like that.

Something like obscuring mist or grease stays in place.

A lot of the bardic buff/debuff abilities will be like this. That is, you have to stay close to the bard to be under its effect and the bard has to concentrate to keep it going.

If a spell has a duration of concentration then if the caster "dies" then the effect dissipates. In this case, they could also be knocked unconscious, or a few other effects that could break their concentration.

Thanks! So, only with "concentration" description?

There are probably exceptions, and if there are they'll be printed in the spells descriptions, but basically yes. Any spell with a duration of concentration will be ended if the caster can no longer concentrate on the spell (and there may be others which can be determined by their description).
