Reach weapons and allied squares

Rules Questions

I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything.

I'm curious to know if you can attack with a reach weapon through an allied square.
For example, imagine XYZ are standing in a row. X has a reach weapon, Y is his ally, and X wants to attack Z.

Is this possible?
If it is, does cover apply? (Everything I can find on Cover is related to Ranged Attacks.)
If cover applies, what kind of cover is it?

Thanks!

When making a melee attack against an adjacent target, your target has cover if any line from any corner of your square to the target's square goes through a wall (including a low wall). When making a melee attack against a target that isn't adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks.

Heh, don't know how I managed to miss that. <_<
Thanks!

Just to clarify: So attacking through my buddy's occupied square with a reach weapon would give the enemy Soft Cover (+4AC, no Ref bonus, no Stealth check). And if my buddy were small sized, it could potentially (GM's discretion) be Soft Partial Cover (+2AC)?

You can use a reach weapon to attack across a creature (friend or foe). The target will get cover (+4). I don't remember which book covers this but you can find it in the PRD under combat:

Search on that page for "such as with a reach weapon"
