Coolest Intelligent magic item you've seen/made?

In game preferably, but in-game items based off of other fiction are more than welcome. Also, post/link stats if you have them.

In 3.5 I made a Cursed Amulet of Natural Armor that resembled an Oak seed and wearing it gave your skin a wooden feel. It communicated with it's owner via dreams and in such dreams resembled a fey female figure, at first indistinct, but as time went by increasingly resembled the owner.

After wearing it for a week you found you could not take the Amulet off, it was grafted to your flesh. The secend stage the character felt an urge to flee into a wooded area. The third stage the character, if not already so, became female. The fourth stage they became chaotic good. Fifth stage they gained the fey template. Finally, they lost all class abilities and became a dryad.

And the Amulet ceased to be.

That's pretty cool.

I thought you were going to say they found a wooded area and then "planted" and became a tree that a dryad later emerged from.

A draconic sorcerer in a noble campaign had an amulet of natural armor made out of one of the scales of his deceased draconic ancestor.

He wasn't adverse to using it for a ressurection... provided there was something in it for him.

Base item: Ring(s) of Friend Shield
Alignment: NG Int: 12 Wis: 20 Cha: 10 Ego: 20
Languages: Celestial, Common
Communication: Speech, Empathy, Telepathy
Senses: 30-feet range, Darkvision, Blindsense
Powers: 10 ranks in Sense Motive, Cure Moderate Wounds 4/day
Special Purpose: defend the servants and interests of Shelyn re: love & marriage
Dedicated Power: True Resurrection 1/month

These Rings of Friend Shield are a pair of wedding rings. They are actually part of the same creature that only has two parts that are on this plane: the two rings. They are treated as a single item with regards to uses/day or month.

The upshot is that the married couple can communicate through the rings at any distance, and have a great source of advice and aid in keeping their marriage strong. The ability to avoid/resolve misunderstandings is a huge benefit!

The rings won't stand for any unfaithfulness, preventing it with its Ego if it can or informing the spouse otherwise. The item chooses when to use any of its powers (including the Friend Shield power) using its own actions. It can also choose not to use them if a wearer is not behaving in accordance with the purpose of the rings. This is rare, as the wearers know the consequences and because, well, they're in love! : )

Two of the PCs in the Council of Thieves AP I'm running are married and the wedding rings are this item.

At a price of 285,100gp they are very expensive (even though the cost is split between two characters), but if you want a cheaper version just take away the true resurrection and it's cheaper by 200k, leaving it at 85,100. Other tweaks can also be made to make it much cheaper. The core idea is that Rings of Friend Shield are a single intelligent item and make cool wedding rings! Since the cost is split between two characters it is more affordable.

I think its in ultimate equipment, not sure but there is an intelligent Bag of Devouring there that can actually bite people. I love the idea behind this... its an evil bag..."Feed me Seymour!"

Also, a long time ago, I was given an intelligent sword of dragon slaying. It was trying to become complete by getting a huge gem for each dragon type (Ruby for Red, Gold for Gold, Emerald for Green Etc.) It grew in power as I replaced its long lost adornments. The sword started off pretty nice to me, but it was a fairly weak item to begin with. The first time I fought a dragon I ended up rolling natural 1s and 2s for the first few rounds and the sword was extremely disappointed. From that point on it believed that I was a useless swordsman until I was able to slay its long hated enemy, the Red Dragon that killed the wizard who made him.

I like it. :-)

Very cool.

One of the best in the sense of it is so bad it's kinda good was the Sword of Dragon Laying. It appeared as a sword of dragon slaying but it's purpose was to bring half dragons into the world.

It doesn't take much imagination here.

An item that I want to introduce one day:

George

George is a sapient bonsai-tree. It has Int 17, Wis 14 Cha 15 and is capable of speech knowing Common, Elven, Sylvan and (secretly) Druidic. Its instructions provide those who listen with a +5 competence bonus to Profession [gardening]. It is also capable of producing a bunch of goodberies three times a day.

I am still wondering about what exact personality George should have. I have weakness towards snarky NPCs/intelligent items but I might make it a different sort of personality for a change.

My favorite was Ruffles, the intelligent rope of climbing. It couldn't speak or communicate telepathically, but could not and shake it's 'head' (end of rope). Ruffles was a giant coward, terrified of edged weapons and often had to be talked or coerced into climbing up into unknown or dark places. He was also quite lazy and would basically hang out in a backpack for most of the day, occasioanally popping his head out to see what's going on (and fleeing back inside at the first sign of an edged weapon wielded by someone he didn't recognize).

Eventually we came upon a rope of entanglement, which Ruffles was apparently attracted to, and he entwined with it and became a more powerful intelligent rope of entanglement and climbing (but still quite cowardly).

This was in our long running Undermountain campaign, so not sure if the DM made it up or if it was an Ed Greenwood/TSR invention.

I had a character concept that I've had in mind for a while (he's actually my username); the character's theme can best be interpreted as an Anti-Paladin, and one of the quests he was sent on put him to search for the sword needed to strike down the Draconic God of Deception, Daranthar the Traitorous.

The Soul Harvester:
Weapon: Large Bastard Sword
Name: The Soul Harvester
Grade: Legendary Artifact
Material: Bloodstone (+6,000)
Properties: Intelligent, +5, Unholy, ([Greater] Shocking), Greater Vampirism (Caster Level 20, +10 Primary Spellcasting Modifier), Indestructible; Cursed
Intelligent Weapon Stats: Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 18 (+4,000), Alignment: Chaotic Evil Telepathy, Sense 30 ft., Blindsense, Read Languages, Read Magic, Speech (+9,500) Purpose: Absorb the souls of others through Vampirism. Allows wielder to cast Vampiric Touch 3/day at CL 20 (+18,000), and grants +2 Luck Bonus on attacks, saves, and skill checks versus living entities. (+80,000)
Base Cost 111,500 Gold Pieces; Total Ego: 26
Total Cost: 317,600 Gold Pieces
Vampirism Description: This enhancement works like the spell Greater Vampirism, dealing an additional 2d4 points of Negative Energy, causing 20% of the damage dealt per attack to add to the wielder's hit points (rounded up), and each successful swing has a 25% chance to drain one level from the target, up to 10 times per day. On command, the damage bonus granted from this enchantment may or may not heal undead targets. Any health gained over the wielder's maximum is converted into temporary hit points for 1 minute/caster level (20 minutes).

Indestructible Description: This weapon cannot be broken, sundered, banished, or destroyed, as the sword is a living embodiment of souls. It can, however, be treated as if it were an undead soul.

Cursed Description: The item seethes with unimaginable evil, and has enough strength to trap the souls of others within the blade.

Upon approaching this sword, it gives a foreboding feeling; anyone walking at or within 15 feet of the sword's square must make a will save or become paralyzed in awe at the weapon; the character can also hear the weapon whisper in his/her mind, causing the player to back away from the sword if the character fails by 5 or less, and cannot approach the blade again for 24 hours. This is a mind-affecting effect. If the character fails by more than 5, (s)he is instead drawn toward the sword as if in a trance. Breaking characters free from this trance is a full-round action, and those that are already tranced cannot break free other people that are tranced.

Anyone touching or grasping the sword must make a will save equal to the weapon's Ego or they will suffer one of the following effects:

1. Outrage: The character becomes dominated by the item, which works like the spell Dominate Monster, and goes into a blind fit of rage, as if being possessed by the sword. Each round the character gets an extra will save, the DC equal to the weapon's ego to stop being outraged. If the character fails, (s)he will pick up the sword and assault the closest person. If multiple people are at equal distance, (s)he will pick one target at random. The character will keep on going until (s)he makes a will save. This is a mind-affecting effect.

This effect can only occur if the character is not in a trance and touches the sword.

2. Soul Trap: The weapon radiates a flash of unholy magic, and the character's soul is absorbed into the sword, the body falling to the ground lifelessly. The character cannot escape without help and is considered dead. A successful DC 35 Spellcraft check tells the character that the soul of the affected creature was stolen by the sword, and can be retrieved. A character may cast Raise Dead, Resurrection, True Resurrection, Wish, or Miracle on the corpse to call the soul back to the body, but it must make a caster level check versus the weapon's Total Ego or the spell and material components are lost. This effect does not work on creatures that have no soul to steal.

This effect can only occur if the character is in a trance and touches the sword.

If a character makes both saving throws consecutively (or is immune to mind-affecting effects), (s)he may pick up the blade without consequence and use it as (s)he sees fit. In rare instances, mostly involving abstaining from killing or slaying, the sword will fight for control and if the weapon succeeds, the wielder will burst into an outrage and kill anything in his/her path, starting with the target the sword wanted dead first. Creatures immune to mind-affecting effects have total dominance over the sword.

Bonus Note: The weapon's base properties vary, but always are +5, Unholy, Greater Vampirism, and is an Intelligent Item. In addition to these properties, the weapon may also destroy one lesser item that has a Shocking property on it, causing the item to shatter into pieces and the blade drains its very essence (including the spirit if the weapon is Intelligent), giving the weapon its property and the property itself becomes enhanced from the vampirism, raising the dice amount granted from 1d6 to 1d8. If the item destroyed is intelligent or the weapon has already destroyed an intelligent item, the power that was within it is then devoured by the thousands inhabiting this blade, which would cause the 1d8 bonus normally granted to instead be 1d10. This also alters the physical description of the weapon, putting Darkrunes on the sword, and covering the blade and grip with crystallized Azurebone.

Physical Description: A 5-foot long, 7 inch wide, and 2 inch thick Bloodstone blade. The thickness from the center of the sword degrades and becomes less until it forms edges which are in the shape and pattern of a symmetrical Flamberge. The hilt is extremely ornate and bulky, with two crystallized Bloodstone points on each side, with several other spikes on the top and bottom platforms, and a few more shards expand on some of those. Each "spike" extending from the two base points is in the shape of a beast's claw, and each one has a narrow hollow filling inside, connecting all of the spikes together into the two base points of the hilt, which then merge to the central crest that has the appearance of a drop of blood. The grip is strapped with dark demonhide skin to protect the wielder and cover its sharp textures. The pommel has a hexagonal shape with a smooth flawless Bloodstone in the shape of an oval in its grasp.

Lore: (Spellcraft DC 40 to identify) This blade was forged with the essence of a thousand vampires condensed into one spirit, the most noteworthy of which was Ghalsc. Nicknamed "The Soul Harvester," he is a lord who's obsession with vampirism went beyond the point of insanity, and led a bastion for vampires. This idealism with a force stronger than chaos was tempered and diluted with the other essences, causing Ghalsc's outrageous spirit to dilute and become more calm and controlled, meaning the sword actually became wieldable. However, upon doing so, this also caused the spirit's hunger to go beyond that of blood; in addition, it also desired the souls of those who's blood it's spilled and bathed in.

(Knowledge History DC 35) The sword was originally commissioned and wielded by the second leader of the Shadowfire clan, Teralor, the leader of a very ancient and clandestine band of vampire slayers; the sword's true name was Ghalsc, the strongest vampire that their clan has slain. Though the vampire started to lead approximately 1,000 others in a battle against the Shadowfire clan and other neighboring vampire slayer clans, he was slain, but also killed their first leader, Ceralhn in the process. The survivors carried the vampires' corpses back to their territory, and the high shaman reincarnated Ghalsc and his minions as one spirit into a sword for the leader's heir, as retribution for their lost comrades.

(DC 40) Teralor then became of strength to wield it, and while it was a great weapon and became the ultimate vampire slayer, it was also making him radical. It eventually got to the point where Teralor would demand offerings like a deity and if none were given he would execute innocent clan members and drain them of their blood. By this point, Yoareth, the High Shaman, exiled Teralor and demanded the weapon become closed away in a secret crypt within the throne room. Eventually he assumed both High Shaman and Clan Leader roles, becoming the only leader to do so, and made law that "Should a dire occasion arise, the Shadowfire Clan Leader and High Shaman will know where the blade is, to usurp it from its resting place and combat the crisis at hand."

(DC 45) However, this occasion has happened once or twice, ending up in the disappearance of the leader or high shaman at some points, but luckily the occasions have not dispersed the clan. Yet, it has caused the clan members to argue or fight for power and leadership.

Eventually, Destroumath Shadowfire, blood brother to Teralor, became leader; fully knowing of the sword's abilities, he commanded that the crypt become sealed with the current high shaman's life energy, and made it an unwritten, yet given law that anyone who discusses or tells about the crypt, its inhabitants, or attempt breaking into it immediately become a traitor and are killed on sight.

Equipment Requirements: Strength 24, Dexterity 16, Critical Mastery, Furious Focus

Crafting Requirements: Not Applicable. This weapon cannot be crafted, as the properties of the sword is in truth, the properties of the souls within the blade.

Destruction Requirements: [Knowledge (Arcana) DC 50] The only solid method plausible to render this weapon useless is to remove or steal the souls stored within the blade, starting from the most recent soul absorbed, to the soul whom, of which, the blade was originally forged from. This drains the power of the sword, removing any special properties the soul might have granted the weapon. Once Ghalsc's soul is the only entity left in the sword, and is siphoned or removed from the sword, the weapon returns to its original shape and material (Ghalsc's bones), and crumbles to dust.

There was a dragon magazine that had an intelligent box that basically did math for you in regard to coins and would commandeer extra dimensional spaces in the vicinity taking their contents into himself for bookkeeping.

I believe his name was Bob or something mundane. Bonus points to anyone who can post or link this item.

Intelligent rope of climbing that has a fear of heights! :D
