Another quickie!
When you cast a spell that has a recharge effect do you (a) HAVE TO try the recharge or (b) MAY you choose to ignore the recharge check and just discard the spell?
There are several circumstances where it's better to have a card visible in your discard pile rather than hidden in your deck (e.g. Lem, Toad, Token of Rememberance) so would be great to have this clarified.
Thank you!

This one's actually pretty clear on page 15 of the rulebook:
This explains circumstances under which you may recharge
the card
Emphasis mine. The word "may" always means it's optional.
The question that I wonder about is if you can voluntarily fail other checks.
There aren't many times you'd want to do this, but the Ambush barrier comes to mind immediately. If you fail to defeat the barrier, you're supposed to go looking through the location deck to find the first monster, and face it with a penalty on your combat check. If you're playing a character who can win fights despite the penalty, you might want to face that monster immediately. Or you might be playing Merisiel, who can evade whatever monster comes up, so you want to just use this as a scouting opportunity, to see what other cards are in that location before you find the monster.

It's not that clear ;)
... the wording of that sentence could be read as either:
a) "This explains circumstances under which a check to recharge the card might happen (but you must do it)"
or
b) "This explains circumstances under which are given the option to recharge the card (and may choose to ignore it)"

Ooh... just checked the BGG thread about this.
Mike has commented (unofficially) that:
The unofficial position we've taken is that you have to roll your die. You don't have to make it the best roll you can make it, but you have to roll.
However, it's still not clear... ;)
Mike might have been replying to the OP in that thread, not to the question about whether or not you HAVE to attempt to recharge spells.
