Does Stealth Break when attacked or illuminated? Or do you just lowerer their Stealth DC against Perception

Rules Questions

So right now i am playing a campaign that a friend of mine made. We were warned that comning up soon would be a high level rouge/ninja hybdrid with very high stelth. This is my first time playing against an enemy that consistantly uses stealth to their advantage and i came up with a couple questions that i cant seem the answer with my core.

Firstly if you hit someone with a spell while they are in stealth does it reveal them? To clarify i plan to potshot a Fireball in the generally vacinity that i got shot from. So if i hit her with my fireball do i see her? Naturally i would assume i do since i both lite up the entire area she was in and made her move as per reflex. Sadly nowhere in the rules, that i can find. does it say anything but perception breaks an enemies stealth. All is says is that if someone attacks from stealth the enemy is aware of the square they are in. If they do the attack ranged they only take a neg to their next stealth check.

Can anyone clear this up for me before we start the next session?

No hitting someone with a spell does not reveal them, and fireball does not provide light by the rules.
If they sneaking character attacks then stealth is broken, and they can not regain stealth unless they have cover or concealment, and nobody is observing them, unless they have a special ability that allows them to do so anyway.
The rules say you can not attack while stealth which is to say that upon attacking you are no longer hidden. That is in the stealth section..IIRC.

Why is the Ninja in drag?

Stealth sees a lot of rule variation. Some GMs do not let a normal character stealth through a brightly-lit ballroom; some do. Some GMs do not let you re-enter stealth when somebody is aware of you; some do.

Note that in the latest Stealth errata, stealth breaks after your attack completes.

I am guessing the enemy in question is sniping, so an attack by that enemy would not necessarily break their stealth either.

That said, sniping is a -20 penalty. So even with crazy stealth checks, it should be possible for some of the party to detect them.

For you, instead of blanketing an area with fireball try Glitterdust.

You could even pick up a Lesser Metamagic Rod of Lingering Spell to create temporary areas where the enemy can not stealth.
