1 person marked this as a favorite.

Anyone watched it?
For those who don't know in this "setting" There is something called Tangential energy. It builds up in things connected to people or places from powerful(or long term)emotions. Basically its creates magic items, many (but not all) of which have some kind of curse attached to their use.

In some cases people have a connection to Tangential energy giving them special abilities like being able to read auras, tell if someone's lying, possibly other things.

My ideas are, spontaneous magic items. Having magic items be really really difficult to make normally (maybe potions and scrolls can be an exception). But there are many magic items that have been created spontaneously and are very dangerous. In the show they are called artifact, which I think fits because many of them are really difficult to destroy.

As a campaign idea, an organisation dedicated to collecting, neutralising and storing the most dangerous artifacts. Kind of like the Pathfinders but focused more on protecting the world from these things rather than just learning about them.

Obviously these items will have to follow special rules so they can't just be dealt with using standard means so I think the artifact rules fit well.

What do you think?

In the Midnight campaign setting these are called Covenant Items. They are created when people use them in extraordinary ways or in extraordinary circumstances. They grow in power with the user.

When outside that person's grasp they fade to normalcy, but if another person with similar methods, goals or beliefs comes into possession of it, it can cause the item to "attune" to a new owner.

Don't know that setting. From 3rd ed?

From the 3.5 days. It's one of my all-time favorites. Imagine Middle-Earth if Sauron had won.

here's the wiki article

You could probably find it for cheap these days. It's definitely worth reading.

Cool.

Sounds like a fun addition to magic items. But I wouldn't like it as a replacement - I like high magic levels and availability :)

The show also inspired an organization in my homebrew world: The Guardians of the Well, Well-guardians, or just Guardians. They collect magical items and magical essence, including items with permanent spells on them and dispose of them in a bottomless well, this well has grown into a 'source'(which is anything that can grant power, like deities and such) which grants well-guardians(prestige class) their abilities to use dispel, create AMFs and other effects, including minor divine spellcasting.

My idea was a magic-using, but sort of anti-magic non-aligned order comparable to paladins - as in: they have a mission. And as prestigeous orders go; a prestige class.

And I really like your idea of magic created at random based on some intangible meassure of meaningfulness. (at least, that's how I read your idea :)

My sunstone falls into that category. A crystal, such as quartz or diamond, is exposed to direct sunlight at least once a day for a year. It emits actual sunlight constantly. You need a platinum alloy holder to keep it from burning off your hand. Keeping it in an asbestos bag temporarily blocks the light. Many artifacts on the show operate independently. The fellowship of the well needs one to have the Sun domain.

Under your system, worshipers of a sun god would intentionally create these, even living up on a mountain to be above the clouds.
