Treasure in adventure modules

Do you only get the treasure explicitly mentioned in Paizo's adventure modules? Or is it assumed you get some randomized treasure in addition per the Ultimate Equipment Guide?

My group dies a lot, and I was wondering if it was because we were under-geared.

APs assume that the treasure you get "as written" is more or less within WBL.

I seem to recall people claiming that Carrion Crown is under-wealthed, although there was a big debate on whether art objects sold for full price (as trade goods) or not.

...or if you loot the house of a guy you are trying to help. The AP seems to assume you do?

And the more you die, the more gold you lose (for raise dead). It's a vicious circle.

I find the opposite. Someone dies, the party loots their gear and a new character comes in at full WBL.

Dark Archive

There is also a chance of loot off wandering monsters.

Er...why wouldn't are objects sell for full value? I thought that was the whole point of gems, art objects, and trade goods: they are essentially alternate forms of gold.

Yes. Ultimate Equipment explicitly states this.

Some people still seem to argue otherwise.

That's only true until the PCs have enough money for raising their deads. If they do, only metagaming would prevent them from doing so.

Why should every character want to come back to life?

If characters who die go to an afterlife dependent on their alignment, I could easily see characters not wanting to be brought back to life.

This is why you should always cast an augury spell before trying to raise someone from the deads, unless you don't mind wasting 5000gp for nothing. :P

What does your total wealth look like?

We've used speak with dead for that purpose on a few occasions.

...

A little like this:

OUR CLERIC
Combat Gear crossbow bolts (20), divine spell scroll (remove curse), wand of cure light wounds (29 charges); Other Gear +1 warhammer, +2 full plate, +2 heavy steel shield, amulet of natural armor +1, backpack, bedroll, belt pouch, candles (10), cheap holy text (“Hammer and Tongs: The Forging of Metal and Other Good Works”), cloak of resistance +2, flint and steel, graven guardian (modified, crafting cost of 10,500gp*), headband of inspired wisdom +2, iron holy symbol of Torag, iron pot, masterwork heavy crossbow, mess kit, rope (hemp, 50 ft.), soap (1 lb.), spell component pouch, tender (11gp, 3cp), torches (10), trail rations (5), waterskin

* It is worth noting that, due to traits, our cleric receives a 5% discount on crafting costs of magical items. This discount increases to 10% if the magical item in question is made of gems, metal, or stone. The value of the graven guardian given above includes these discounts.

OUR FIGHTER
Combat Gear durable arrows (20, sharpened with whetstone), potions (enlarge person 4); Other Gear +1 dueling heavy flail (with hollowed pommel), +2 darkleaf cloth hide, bells (5), belt of giant strength +2, bolas (4), boots of the cat, climber’s kit, cloak of the hedge wizard (transmutation), compass, composite longbow (+1 strength bonus), fighter’s kit, flail (with hollowed pommel), heavy wooden shield (not often used), ioun torch, large tent, masterwork backpack, mirror, pitons (8), robe of infinite twine, sap, signal horn, spring loaded wrist sheathes (2), tender (20gp, 3,020sp, 35cp), tindertwigs (10), traveler’s any-tool, whetstone, wooden holy symbol of Torag

OUR GUNSLINGER
Combat Gear alchemical paper cartridges (adamantine 10, cold iron 10, silver 17, standard 37), alchemist’s fire (4), bladeguard (2), potions of cure light wounds (3), smoke sticks (4), sunrods (2), tracer bullets (2), vermin repellent (2); Other Gear +1 alchemical silver katana, +1 buckler, +1 mithral lamellar, +1 musket, canteen, cloak of resistance +1, compass, crowbar, endless bandolier, falcon (pet), falconry gauntlet, feather step slippers, flint and steel, grappling hook, gunsmith’s kit, handy haversack, ioun torch, ring of protection +1, sleeves of many garments, smoked goggles, spider’s silk rope (100-ft. length), tender (1,885gp, 3sp, 2cp), traveler’s dictionary, umbrella

OUR INQUISITOR
Combat Gear durable arrows (20); Other Gear +1 adaptive composite longbow, +1 buckler, +1 chain shirt, +1 cold iron longsword, +1 mithral morningstar, amulet of natural armor +1, cloak of resistance +2, inquisitor’s kit, ring of protection +1, tender (7gp)

This does not include a handful of minor magical items we picked up exploring a ghost town in the middle of Carrion Crown 3.

We are in the middle of Carrion Crown 2 and so far we only had one death (in the first module). I think this is mostly due to the fact that 3 new players joined the party once the campaing was already started (2 at level 3, 1 at level 4). Their characters started with the recommended wealth for their respective level, which translates into ''free treasure'' for the party. Also, the number of players varies between 4 and 6 for every sessions, making things easier for us. Carrion Crown does seems like a brutal AP for a four men party.

Cleric 34,082 (42,082 if I count the Graven Guardian at regular price.)
Fighter 23,030
Inquisitor 23,143
Gunslinger 21,000

Although my Kingmaker experience was too fringe to mention, I'll comment that the beginning of my Council of Thieves seems to have thrown a great deal of money at the party.

Maybe they figure missable treasures shouldn't count as much, since if you repeat it enough times, parties will only get a portion of the total treasure ... ? But my parties tend to investigate everything, and way-max Perception. I've never really had a party that 'missed stuff'.
