If I could pick one and only one magic item to have in real life it would be a ring of sustenance. Think about it. Perfect nutrition, Needing 4 less hours of sleep, never getting tired, and depending on DM interpretation never needing to go to the bathroom.
A wand of fireball would be fun, but it's hardly practical.
What do you think?

I was thinking more along the lines of what YOU as a person want IRL. Not what a character in the world would want.
What do you, as you are now, want IRL. If you want flashy go for it, but I'd tend toward things that aren't obvious. Throwing around fireballs would probably draw the attention of unwanted persons, not to mention the authorities.

Besides the obvious teleport, the ones that come to mind are all low-level...
Locate object. Mainly to find my keys.
Unseen servant would be pretty useful for Saturday mornings when I do the weekly housecleaning.
You'd never need a raincoat, winter jacket, or galoshes with protection from elements.
And this is much higher level, but you could either be much more productive or take a lot of vacation with a simulacrum.

Time Stop ... never enough time to get everything done as it is.
Teleport ... screw airfare.
Prestidigitation ... house keeping and laundry just became so much simpler.
Telepathy ... would it be insider trading if no one actually told you about the info??
The "Wall of" spells could be kinda cool as well, though I don't know what regular practical use I would have for them ... I'm sure I could come up with something ... like make a giant stone bread oven with Wall of Stone and then use Wall of Fire as the heat source ... or Wall of Ice to make ramps for sledding ... or Wall of Iron to make people go "What the hell is this iron wall doing out in the middle of nowhere?"

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Greater teleport at will is VERY high on my wish list too.
Likewise, closely following by Prestigitation and Shrink Item.
If I could have 1 and only 1 magic item in RL, I think I'd take Bucknard's Everfull Purse (1E DMG), as long as it could be configured to modern currency. (Basically, keep one coin of each type in it at all times and it refills to 26 of that coin every morning.)

A type IV bag of holding filled with high end precious gems ...
A Cape of the Mountebank would allow you to become a really bad magician with a really great finish ...
Boots of Speed could help you get that gold medal in the Olympics (though people may originally laugh at a runner wearing boots) ...
An Apparatus of the Crab would just be the source of too much fun and mayhem ...

I have to say that an at will Shapechange spell would probably be fun. Finding places to use it would be an issue though.
Another option would be the Heal spell. Instantly heal any disease or issue you could possibly ever have aside from death? Yes please. Well, I guess technically I would need the Regenerate spell as well to cover every possible injury as well. (This is a sign that I'm getting old)

It would either be a ring of three wishes (followed by the services of a very competent lawyer) or a Nacreous Gray Sphere

Shapechange has you covered, because Shapechange allows you to get Regeneration via simulation of Giant Form II or Plant Shape III.

TCG, didn't we do this one already?
But +1 to Alitan's mirror of mental prowess for item. Spellwise, polymorph any object would get an awful lot of mileage. Even so I might prefer charm person.

I'd say the headband of int probably gaining 60 IQ points from a headband would be nice, but then why stop at only int when you can get int, cha,and wis all on the same item. Then again, go all out with the belt of magnificence from 3.5 and have all 6.
EDIT: Actually, I think that I would go with the book that gives +5 int permanently so as to not have to wear my item at all times.
