Best item / spell / etc you'd want in real life.

If I could pick one and only one magic item to have in real life it would be a ring of sustenance. Think about it. Perfect nutrition, Needing 4 less hours of sleep, never getting tired, and depending on DM interpretation never needing to go to the bathroom.

A wand of fireball would be fun, but it's hardly practical.

What do you think?

Now, material components might be an issue IRL so...

Shades. There's so much you can do with that, especially if you count the summons. You can always voluntarily fail your save to disbelieve to gain beneficial effects of the spell.

I was thinking more along the lines of what YOU as a person want IRL. Not what a character in the world would want.

What do you, as you are now, want IRL. If you want flashy go for it, but I'd tend toward things that aren't obvious. Throwing around fireballs would probably draw the attention of unwanted persons, not to mention the authorities.

Hat of disguise. Hands down. If I get that, also rope trick and ring of sustenance. Invisibility, charm person, greater teleport are next on the wish list.

Greater teleport at will is VERY high on my wish list too.

Besides the obvious teleport, the ones that come to mind are all low-level...

Locate object. Mainly to find my keys.

Unseen servant would be pretty useful for Saturday mornings when I do the weekly housecleaning.

You'd never need a raincoat, winter jacket, or galoshes with protection from elements.

And this is much higher level, but you could either be much more productive or take a lot of vacation with a simulacrum.

Invisibility.

Sovereign Court

Time Stop ... never enough time to get everything done as it is.

Teleport ... screw airfare.

Prestidigitation ... house keeping and laundry just became so much simpler.

Telepathy ... would it be insider trading if no one actually told you about the info??

The "Wall of" spells could be kinda cool as well, though I don't know what regular practical use I would have for them ... I'm sure I could come up with something ... like make a giant stone bread oven with Wall of Stone and then use Wall of Fire as the heat source ... or Wall of Ice to make ramps for sledding ... or Wall of Iron to make people go "What the hell is this iron wall doing out in the middle of nowhere?"

Fabricate.

Suggestion, telekinesis, lightning bolt, detect thoughts, expeditious retreat, jump...clearly I just wish I were a Jedi.

In order of preference:

Teleport
Fabricate/Polymorph Any Object
Prestidigitation
Overland Flight
Telekinesis

Oh, right. Polymorph any object. Telekinesis.

No one said we had to stick to a particular genre, so...

A replicator from Star Trek, with power supply.

Wish.

Problem with wish is the xp cost...

I would say the problem with Wish is we don't know what IRL's GM is like.

Likewise, closely following by Prestigitation and Shrink Item.

If I could have 1 and only 1 magic item in RL, I think I'd take Bucknard's Everfull Purse (1E DMG), as long as it could be configured to modern currency. (Basically, keep one coin of each type in it at all times and it refills to 26 of that coin every morning.)

Ring of three wishes.

A strong candidate for me from another genre would be the carte blanche from oWoD Mage. It is a card that allows you to use it in any situation that calls for a card...

Honestly,
Any of the various open-ended divinations---augury, divination, commune.
Even if you only have 70% accuracy on good/bad/indifferent predictions, imagine what you could make on the stock market.

Sovereign Court

A type IV bag of holding filled with high end precious gems ...

A Cape of the Mountebank would allow you to become a really bad magician with a really great finish ...

Boots of Speed could help you get that gold medal in the Olympics (though people may originally laugh at a runner wearing boots) ...

An Apparatus of the Crab would just be the source of too much fun and mayhem ...

ring of wishes. Then I can do everything else I want to do.

Normally when I get asked this question it's a very close call between prestidigitation and Ring of Sustenance, but since those have already been mentioned I'll bring up my third option: magnificent mansion. I would absolutely love to just have my house available whenever and wherever I wanted it.

I have to say that an at will Shapechange spell would probably be fun. Finding places to use it would be an issue though.

Another option would be the Heal spell. Instantly heal any disease or issue you could possibly ever have aside from death? Yes please. Well, I guess technically I would need the Regenerate spell as well to cover every possible injury as well. (This is a sign that I'm getting old)

Modernized Version of Bucknard's Everfull Purse would be Bucknard's Nevermaxed Credit Card...

Ring of three wishes hands down.
Teleport would be cool

But also for any politician that said rape was the woman's fault or that getting pregers from rape was legit, etc, a girdle of femininity would instantly appear on them. How evil is that :P

telekinesis.

that way i can move cars out of the way that are driving too slow or too stupid. among other uses.

Scarab Sages

It would either be a ring of three wishes (followed by the services of a very competent lawyer) or a Nacreous Gray Sphere

The old 1E Mirror of Mental Prowess would be one of my first choices, in the magic item department; scrying, information gathering, and transportation all rolled into one. (Hellos, Fort Knox...)

Dark Archive

Charm Person. Yeah, I know. It's not nice to mess with someone's head. I don't care.

Interplanetary Teleport and Life Bubble...

I want to see the Sun - from Pluto.

Shapechange has you covered, because Shapechange allows you to get Regeneration via simulation of Giant Form II or Plant Shape III.

OHHH, Polymorph any object is a good one!

Three times.

Shapechange, polymorph any object and greater teleport at will takes care of most things you need... material components for shapechange are pretty easy to deal with then. =)

TCG, didn't we do this one already?

But +1 to Alitan's mirror of mental prowess for item. Spellwise, polymorph any object would get an awful lot of mileage. Even so I might prefer charm person.

I guess I did. lol. Good catch.

OK, after HOURS of trying to get a real, live person on the line for help from my #$&^#$ing cell phone company, I want Discern Location, Greater Scrying, and Demand.

#@(*&ing phone company...

>grrrrrr<

I changed my mind. If I had to pick just one. I want a headband of Int +6 (or greater if we're going epic). Associated skills: Programming, Robotics, Advanced Physics. I want to make advanced nanites.

Edit: make one of the associated skill linguistics.

Ring of Regeneration...

Be careful what you wish for, Oterisk. Rings of regeneration can be your best friends... or your worst nightmares.

I'm gonna go with polymorph any object at will.

Be anyone or anything plus various flight modes or swim speeds? Yeah that sounds good. Guess there's a reason that I played a transmuter to high levels.

Liberty's Edge

The Handy Haversack. Never overpack and always find what you're looking for.

OR

The Cloak of Comfort. Sweet tea, hot or cold. Food. Ignore the elements. Always have a place to stay.

Helm of Telepathy - always find out what the girlfriend actually wants!

If I could get 3 items it would be:
Helm of Telepathy
Ring of Telekinesis
Ring of Regeneration

Float around using Telekinesis, reading every ones thoughts and regenerating any damage.

I WOULD BE A GOD!

OK, if we have THREE items...

Mirror of Mental Prowess
Portable Hole
Necklace of Adaptation

If it's three SPELLS...

Heal
Commune
Gate

I've got your ring right here. Don't let the monkey paw shape put you off. :)

Shadow Lodge

Heal, or CLW, or and Cure Spell, really. Regenerate.

I'm a medic, so the ability to Stabalize a patient from 30ft away in less than 6 seconds is freaking amazing, no hands-on.

Just for fun Deck of Many Things and/or Rod of Wonder.
Flying Carpet?

Shadow Lodge

Any kind of Wayfinder would be neat.

Adamantine Reflex Hammer (the little thing docs hit your knees with to test your responces).

Dark Archive

I'd say the headband of int probably gaining 60 IQ points from a headband would be nice, but then why stop at only int when you can get int, cha,and wis all on the same item. Then again, go all out with the belt of magnificence from 3.5 and have all 6.

EDIT: Actually, I think that I would go with the book that gives +5 int permanently so as to not have to wear my item at all times.
