I have a player in a game right now who has a blackblade and it recently just came to "life" and gained it's ego and name.. Along with that are some goals of it's own but i'm still trying to iron those out.
What are some of your intelligent weapon/artifact goals?
World Domination? Genocide of a certain subtype? Bring in all comers!
World Domination's a good one.
In my homebrew, my player's blackblade is an ancient LE Drow warrior who fought to bring Order to his people. After his defeat and exile he bound himself to his sword and my player is the first of his descendents(a half-elf with the drow traits from ARG) to wield it and carry on his legacy. It's goal is nothing less of taking over the world and establishing order on a grand scale.
Mind you it is a class feature though, and it's supposed to share an alignment with your player... In my case, the sword is LE and the player is LN, but that's because he liked the idea of the sword being evil and slowly corrupting him during his quest. So my best suggestion is to talk with your player if he has any cool ideas for the sword out of game.
The CE Magus in my Kingmaker game has a Black Blade Longsword whose goal is nothing but battle, to fight and kill anything it encounters. It even has the symbol of Ares on it. It constantly tries to goad him into killing things they encounter, but isn't yet strong enough to MAKE him.
The one in my PbP is LN and her Dueling Sword is more sedate, it's a weapon of protection primarily. I haven't worked out the details on her goals though.
