Conversions

This is not a standard conversion thread. I am going to run the original d20 conversions using Pathfinder for my kids & their cousins. With that, I am not looking to strictly adhere to the canon of the world. More like just looking to capture the feel. They will have their own characters. They have read none of the original stories. I think I have a great adventure that doesn't have to worry about, "But that isn't they way it happened in the book!"

The kids playing are 12-14 years old. I am going to keep it uncomplicated as possible,as far as organizations. I will still have the towers of High Sorcery, but not the 3 orders. They will just be more concerned over focus. Model it more after the Towers in Dragon Age. Keeping the divine casters out as per original, though. No sorcerers or bards. Magi are the enforcers of Tower Law, hunting down those outside of the Tower. Knights of Solomnia are Cavaliers. Witches would be outlaws to the Tower. Rangers would be non-spellcasting archetypes. Gnome wizards would be left alone, well because they are gnomes & nobody wants to press the issue. lol

How does this sound so far?

It sounds fun. Can I ask how many players you have?

4...maybe, lol. One of them may be a GM PC. I hate to do it, but they aren't up to playing mages yet.

MWP has new editions for 3.5 that came out a few years ago, Dragons of Spring, Dragons of Winter and Dragons of Autum.

That is my starting point.

Kudos to you Xorial for taking the younger generation on this ride. I hope they have a blast. I was somewhere in the 12-14 age range when I picked up my first Dragonlance novel and started reading it.

In the future I may try to run a Dragonlance campaign converted over to the Pathfinder system, so I would be interested to hear how your adventure goes.

Great starting point! Please let us know how it goes!

Glad people think the way I am going is pretty good. I was rereading the adventures in preparation. I am letting them have their own characters, so the story will be unique to them. But I really forgot how sparse the modules are, lol. They really only have the "high point" encounters, having the DM come up with the rest. Another good thing to be glad that they haven't read the books, yet.

Grand Lodge

I tried running something like this for my friends, that was supposed to be happening concurrently to the War of the Lance. It was all centered around a small village (Stonybrook) and all of the characters were from that village. It was all going well until the kender died... then it fell apart because no one left was Good-aligned... It was sad...

I hope yours really works and I hope to hear about certain things that you did that worked! War of the Lance era is my favorite campaign setting of all time...

Good luck man!

The characters are looking up. I didn't even try to make thwm play archetyple characters, but they did anyway, starting at 5th level. We have a female kender rogue, a male human cavalier (Knight of Solomnia), a male dwarf fighter. I am attaching a GM character, a male half-elf magus. The magus was chosen over a mage because I want him to be behind the curve for the higher level spells. I will use Riverwind & Goldmoon as NPCs for getting the Blue Crystal Staff into the story. Allows me to draw on the book and still make the PCs the focus.

Are you planning on keeping Riverwind and Goldmoon in the party throughout the whole story, or just long enough to drop off the staff and then move on?

Will the Cavalier be the one to run into the two barbarians first, and introduce them to the rest of the PC's like Sturm did in the book?

That's awesome that they are taking on characters that are similar to the ones from the original book!

The module actually allows for them to all meet in the Inn. I will have them meet Riverwind and Goldmoon there. I think I will steal from the book to get the story moving on from there, lol. Maybe have a little impromptu chase from the Inn. I'm not sure how long I will keep them in the story. They will only leave if it seems like it is appropriate.

Hi, I'll be paying attention to this thread since I'm a fan of Dragonlance from way back. Well, from 2nd ed. anyway missed the 1st ed. stuff but have read most of the novels.

Keep us posted while the game develops, I enjoy reading how others play through adventures.

Talking about serendipity. This went very similar to the book, lol.

Cast of characters:
Oarsen Dragonhawk - Order of the Sword Cavalier. Seeking to restore his family's name to the rolls of the Knights.

Malrak Thunderhill - Dwarven Fighter. Friend of Orsen. Likes the kind of trouble the Knight Hopeful seems to be able to find.

Talia Trapspringer - Kender Rogue. Tags along with these two because they see all sorts of fun things and places. Has a real way with animals. All the time unaware that her "gift" is due to a Ring of Animal Friendship that she is wearing, just because it was pretty when she found it.

Elistar Halfelven - Half-Elf Magus. Long time resident of Solace that fell in with the rest when they accepted him. As a Magus, he searches out potential Wizard candidates to steer towards the Tower.

So far:
The party returns to Solace after spending 5 years on a quest. After hearing rumors of divine magic, they decided to search out the truth. Returning home, disappointed, they are hoping to find something better to do with their lives. That seems to not be the case when they are accosted by Seeker Militia searching for something called the Blue Crystal Staff. Never tolerating rudeness, Oarsen took particular exception when the Seekers attempted to take his father's old Battle Standard. Four short swings of weapons later, and the Seekers were all down. That left the vicious guard dog masterless, which our Kender could not stand. She decided she liked the frothing beast, and the next thing you know, her "gift" with animals had her another friend.

The party continued on to the Inn of the Last Home before anything else could go wrong. They were dismayed to see the town crawling with all of the Seekers, looking for this mysterious Staff. Easing into the Inn, they reacquaint themselves with Otik's spiced potatoes as an old man spins tales by the fireplace, unaware of the attention of a Seeker named Hendrick. Talia decides to canvas the Inn for information on this Staff. She was rebuffed by two Plains barbarians who seemed just a tad bit too nervous, even considering Kender reputations. When she decided to chat with the old story teller, he suddenly bestowed a prophecy on her.

"I foresee a great and terrible destiny in your eyes. There is a Blue Crystal Staff which you must return to Xak Tsaroth! There, a few days hence, you shall face your greatest peril in contest for the greatest gift given to man.”

Totally intrigued to be given an omen, fortune & a mission all in one, our Kender wants to know more. Her companions helping her interrogate this Fizban character, they quickly decide that this fellow is off his gourd. As it would happen, Fate decided to intervene. Seeker Hendrick, having heard enough of Fizban's Tall Tales, decides he needs to be arrested. Talia's newest friend, the former guard dog renamed Dookie, takes a bite out of Hendrick's posterior. In the chaos, Hendrick is knocked into the fireplace, getting viciously burned. Grapping nearby Plainswoman's quarterstaff to trip Hendrick to the ground, lest he set the Inn ablaze, he was miraculously healed of all wounds. The Blue Crystal Staff is found! The companions joined cause with the Plains Barbarians, Goldmoon & Riverwind. Escaping out the back stairs, the group jumped on mounts, barreling through all opposition as they make their escape out of town.

How are you doing the Prestige Classes for the Knights of Solamnia?

I'm not, lol. I don't plan on using them. It seems to be one of those things that sounds great in a story, but has little impact for kids playing the game. I figure that the cavalier Orders actually do a pretty nice job of simulating the organization. I just won't use the Orders as ranking. More like just different outlooks.

Well played, Xorial! This sounds like it will have all the makings of an epic story (well technically it already was, but you know what I mean). :)

Interesting. Are you planning on doing Dragons of Winter with the knight character?

It may be awhile before we get there, but yes for now. I only get my kids every two weeks. If we stay at my parents' then thier cousin can play. If we stay at my apartment, not so much. Just will be a loooooooong campaign.

LOL! Good luck to you! Please let us know how it goes!

Silver Crusade

Have a question for you. My gaming group and i are starting a new pathfinder game. This time set in dragonlance. I am trying to find how to build a deathknight (kinda like from world of warcraft). In my past gaming experience i never liked anti-paladins. Thought about some cross of a hellknight class. I just want the character to feel like a deadly warrior that uses necromancy and maybe tie it into some form of control, influence, or powers that deal with dragons. (Dragon rider, dragon powers, etc). Can anyone give me some ideas? My character still believes in takhisis, even though she has been gone for years. He use to be a knight of nerika. Thanks in advance!

There are the Knights of Neraka?

Silver Crusade

They never felt like what i'm asking about, though. When i played a character before as a knight i was a cleric. I'm really thinking of how my character can be somewhat like Arthas from WoW.

Well there is the Dragonrider PRC and it sounds like you might want to do a DL mystic.

There was a thread on this forum about upgrading DL to Pathfinder and there was a lot of work done there. That might be helpful.

Silver Crusade

Thanks for your help!

You are welcome! You might have to dig through the forum but there was some pretty good work done to bring DL into Pathfinder. The Dragonlance Nexus also has information you might find useful.
