New Boon Ideas

Pathfinder Society® General Discussion

Silver Crusade **

This thread is for suggesting new boon ideas. Keep it focused on ideas for boons, not on how they get distributed.

For starters, I'll be working on a list of boons for all the major deities of Pathfinder.

And I'll start with Abadar, since he's the best. And its alphabetical too.

Abadarian Connections: Your character has connections with the Church of Abadar, which serves as the courts. If the party is captured, you may use this boon to clear you of said charges and be set free. Once used, cross off this boon.

Can we get the excellent list of boons thought up in the other thread cross-posted here to see where we stand.

Also lets see if we can get a comment from Mike and Mark about whether or not we are on a fool's errand thinking up all these boons. *Begins furiously inscribing a summoning circle.*

Is this Any Boon?

Convention Boons?

Convention Boons that can Replace Racial Boons?

The original point was to think of boons to replace racial boons as con boons, under the rational that the con boons should be something completely new, shiny and exclusive rather than being a widely published character option which is blocked off for most people.

That said, we seem to have strayed from that purpose about 5 pages into the original thread.

I read the entire other thread as people replied. All thoughts are welcome as we will have 18 new boons this year at Gen Con. So, I definitely don't mind suggestions.

Here is a compiled list sent to me thus far of boons I might consider and I generally agree with the thoughts below:

The Good (typically clever and very often reasonable):

Faction Boons: A boon that gives the owner a bonus if he performs a series of tasks, much like the Wisdom-for-Conversion boon that people received from Paizo Con 2009. Either a specific task must be completed several times (Repeat model), or the boon lists 2-4 different tasks that must all be accomplished to unlock the boon (Scavenger Hunt model). As an example, a Sczarni might have to steal a named NPC's valuable heirloom without getting caught, dupe a local law official without getting caught, and overcome an encounter with outlaws without resorting to violence.
Exemplary Pathfinder: The character to which this is attributed may begin at 2nd level with 3 XP, 4 PA, and ~1,100 gp. This is a very simple but worthwhile boon that should not detract from game-play.

Versatile Fame: The boon might grant several unique uses of PP.

Unique Follower: A translator was suggested

Thassilonian Rune Boon: The poster suggested giving 3rd or 5th level spell-like abilities for the boon (eep?).

Access to Prohibited Archetype: The character may use one of the gunpowder archetypes normally considered too rare in Golarion to play. This could be a nice way to allow a very limited number of big game hunter rangers or spellslinger wizards into the campaign.

Share a Teamwork Feat: It does what it says. I inferred that there is a boon in circulation that allows a character to gain a Teamwork feat for a round, but it doesn't necessarily give anyone else the feat.

Right Tool for the Job: The character may pull out a mundane item of 50 gp or less, much like a Pathfinder Chronicler or a Well-Prepared halfling. This boon could be used perhaps three times.

Momentary Darkvision: Gain darkvision for a few rounds. It sounds useful and pretty easy to write up.

Bonus Carrying Capacity: It doesn't hurt to be able to carry more equipment.

Pathfinder Handicap: You can play a character with NPC class levels. The desire for this boon might be a little on the low side, but a few folks were clamoring for it.

[Boon for First-Time Players]: I just like the idea of a boon that can only be used by a player who started playing Pathfinder at the convention. I would add that this would be even cooler if the player who drew it could then try for a different boon if he himself did not qualify to receive the boon, but the player could then give it away to a qualifying player. Way to make friends and make others feel welcome!

The Tricky (clever but difficult to implement/tweak):

Unique Item/Spell: Each would be unique to a convention or region. Much like a collector's set of dice, these could be really neat. Even so, they represent considerable design and balance work.

Train a Friend: You may gain a bonus with an untrained skill (becomes a class skill, and you gain 1 rank) by learning from a fellow Pathfinder after a scenario. This might be more broadly applicable, but that would require additional tinkering.

Purchase "Advanced" Items: The character could purchase one or more scrolls, wands, or potions with a higher caster level. I would limit the level to 12 or so, and perhaps only allow a few such purchases.

What about boons that allow access to restricted traits, like magical aptitude, and rich parents etc etc.

instead of rich parents, you could just make a boon for new characters that says you start with 400g instead of 150g. Keeps my 2 trait slots free, and I can get that Falchion and some potions/scrolls from the get go.

Keeping with the religion boons. (And alphabetical order)

Achaekek's bite: On a confirmed critical hit, you may choose to increase your critical multiplier by an additional step (X2 becomes X3, etc) cross this boon off your sheet when used.
or...
Achaekek's bite: (Finish him!) You may make a death attack (DC 10 + 1/2 character level + Cha mod) cross this boon off your sheet when used.

Alesta's key: You may automatically succeed on any disable device check to open a door or portal. If the door is magically held you may instead cast greater dispel magic on it using your character level as your caster level. Cross this boon off your sheet when used.

Angradd's axe: You may apply the flaming property to your melee weapon for the duration of one combat. If you use this boon with a greataxe, it becomes a flaming burst weapon for the duration of the combat. Cross this boon off your sheet when used.

I meant magical knack BTW.

I went to Con of the North a while back (my first and so far only Con, only because it was so close/convenient) and had two shots at a boon. Both times I randomly drew one that lets me benefit from the Allied Spellcaster feat for one round and only if I'm adjacent to someone with that feat. And I'm not bitter about it at all.

The Exchange ****

on the Religion boons idea -
Faithless - +1 resistance bonus on saveing throws against divine spells as long as you have no patron diety.

The Exchange ****

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A boon to shair - that you can only give to someone who was NOT at the CON.
Talk about causing a stir... you could even call it "someone went to XXX-CON and all I got was this masterwork T-shirt."

Yeah, it allows a SECOND shirt re-roll if the first re-roll was under 5.

Apsu's crown - You may rally your allies, giving your party a +1 bonus to attack rolls and saves. This also affects their familiars/mounts/companions. Cross this boon off your sheet when used.

Asmodeus' Loyalty - You may 'seize' control of a creature under the effect of a charm/compulsion spell or summoned via a Conjuration (Summoning) spell or spell like ability. You must succeed in a contested charisma check against the controling or summoning creature. The duration of the spell you seize remains the same. When successfully used, cross this boon off your character sheet.

Besmara's Loyalty - You may make a creature with a challenge rating equal or less than your own attack an adjacent ally of the target for one round. Cross this boon off your sheet when used.

Silver Crusade **

Starchild of Desna: You may cast dancing lights 3 times per day. These lights appear as softly glowing stars, in colors of your choice.
