Hi all.

I posted this on the APG's messageboard but I've gotten no reply, so I'm re-posting here, to see if someone can give me advice...

Regarding "Saving Finale":

SAVING FINALE wrote:

You must have a bardic performance in effect to cast this spell. With a flourish, you can immediately end your bardic performance when a creature within range affected by your bardic performance fails a saving throw, allowing the subject to immediately reroll the failed saving throw.

What is the intended level of metagaming for this spell? That is, how does the bard know that a save was failed?

This would be evident for a disintegrate, say, since there's a ray that touches a PC and it turns into a bit of dust, but suppose one of the PCs is affected by a spell-like effect (no verbal or somatic components) and with an effect that does not immediately show, such as a charm person. Would the bard still be able to force the reroll, even though he has no way of knowing that a spell was cast, on whom, or if the save was failed? This would be metagaming, yes, but going the other way will end in discussions about when it's allowed and when not.

Maybe...

1) You suspect something wrong is happening

2) You suspect this is some kind of magic

3) You cast detect magic and or identify

4) You make a spellcraft roll

5) You sing (if you weren't already singing

6) Finally you cast Saving Finale.

Long, tedious, but completely in-game.

Well... its an interesting question. This is an immediate action spell, which means that it is effectively interrupting during that moment when a spell lands and is being resisted.

I do not think that there needs to be some check to determine if the bard knows that the save failed. There are lots of reactionary abilities like this one. See flesh wound or defensive roll or divine interference. There are dual cursed oracles that can and will make enemies reroll critical threats. How can they know it was a critical threat, particularly if it never really actually happens.

For this one I would say that you just go by the letter of the rules with no additional information required by the bard. He needs to have line of effect to his ally, and that is pretty much it. It is a magical ability after all.

Dark Archive

This is one of those Rule of Cool effects where you just have to metagame it. Saves are barely an in-universe concept as it is.

The bard instantly knows a saving finale is needed, thanks to his perfect dramatic timing.

Speaking of timing, this thread is over a year old.
