Consecrated Weapon from the AA

Is it possible to get an existing weapon "upgraded" to Consecrated Weapon status, or must it be purchased as a consecrated weapon from the start. Ditto for the Sanctified Shield.

Unlike special materials, both appear to be magical enchantments, so I would think they could be added to an existing weapon/shield. Similar to the way a strength boost (mighty) can be added to a bow after-the-fact (although that is not magical in nature).

I would agree. In fact, I hope you are right, as my cleric would like to do this to make his sword function as his holy symbol, since it's a LOT cheaper than the dohicky from Gods And Magic that does this and more.

What Gods and Magic item are you refering to?

Unofficial opinion: I reviewed the section in the AA briefly and I don't see anything there that leads me to believe this is a 'at the time of construction', like masterwork would be, so that you should be able to add it on the fly to 'any weapon' or 'any shield' as the descriptions indicate. I know logic doesn't always rule the day, but it seems reasonable in both cases that these are ceremonies or rituals performed on the weapon or shield to convey the ability and not a required part of the manufacturing process.

The item is the Inheritor's Gauntlet. 2700gp to let you treat any longsword you hold in that hand as your holy symbol, 1/day for 1 minute give your sword a +1 enhancement bonus to hit and damage, 1/day for 1 minute grant your longsword the evil outsider bane property, and if you draw Iomedae's holy symbol with the finger of the gauntlet it glows for 1 hour or until you draw another one.

Since adamantine holy symbols aren't available, and I'd rather not buy enough wooden/silver symbols to look like Medeival Mr T, Consecrated Weapon/Sanctified Shield look like what I want, and I'd hate to cash in my +1 longsword (at half price) for a +1 consecrated longsword.
