Gnolls in AD&D 1e and 2e used a greatbow, but that's the only reference I can remember.

There was a greatbow in 3.5, it was an exotic weapon IIRC and did a d10 base damage range 130ft cost 115, this is from memory though.

There was a greatbow in Complete Warrior, in 3.5. Pretty much just an exotic bow that did 1d10 instead of 1d8.

Is that what you were thinking of? If so, taking an exotic weapon proficiency for isn't actually going to be an optimal use of a feat. The difference between 1d8 and 1d10 is 1 damage on average, which is pretty unimpressive for a feat. Not to mention that Longbows are going to show up a lot more than an obscure weapon from a 3.5 book.

Complete Warrior's Greatbow looked like this:

Exotic Weapon
- 150 gp
- 1d8 (S) 1d10 (M)
- x3 Crit Multiplier
- 120 ft.
- 6 lbs

It's composite version was 50 gp more expensive and added 10 ft. to the range increment (total 130 ft.) I built a sniper character with one for the crazy range increment.

This is from my house rules, but it might help you:

Elven Strongbow
Exotic ranged weapon
100gp
1d8 p / 1d10 p (small/medium)
Crit x3
Range 120 ft.
Weight 3 lbs.

Elven Composite Strongbow
Exotic ranged weapon
150gp
1d8 p / 1d10 p (small/medium)
Crit x3
Range 150 ft.
Weight 3 lbs.
(plus 150 gp per +1 strength rating)

As usual, proficiency in one means proficiency in both.

They're a racial weapon for elves (my house rules contain extra racial weapons for all standard races), who found ways to have bows that are taller even than longbows (the tall elven frame helps handle this).
