Or does it cost a round of Bardic Performace to use?

My gut says it takes a round of Bardic Performance to use, and up to 10 attacks as a standard action. But much like the abilities name, the entry is weirdly worded. :P

Forgive the complainty-soundingness of this request, I only look to understand your awesome mind!

In the ARG playtest, many agreed that since the Skilled racial feature has the same relationship to the extra skill point favored class bonus as the Toughness feat has to the extra hit point favored class bonus, the Skilled feature should therefor be treated as equivalent in power to a feat. This logic seems unassailable to me, and yet the Static Feat feature's cost remains at 2 RP, while the Skilled feature is still double that, at 4 RP. What is your Wisdom, O Toothy One?

Personally, I'll probably never play the class, I was asking the question to satisfy my curiosity. Because it's just to satisfy my curiosity, I could care less about the 'RAW' answer. Besides, Rules questions are asked to James all the time, despite the fact he isn't 'the Rules Guy'. Honestly, if he clarifies a question when nothing official has been made, it's usually a good enough guideline on how it works. It may not be official, but it's close enough to satisfy me in my book.

Technically, yes, it would grant the Celestial template to your entropic animal or your imp... but in practice, alignment considerations would make such an event unlikely at best. Celestial Servant is primarily aimed at enhancing "normal" companions/familiars/mounts, so a GM could well simply say you can't use this ability on something that's already got conflicting "flavors" on it.

For the same reason, while you can pour maple syrup on a chocolate cake... and while doing so DOES make the whole thing sweeter... it's not necessarily a good idea and you probably shouldn't do it because it ruins both things for a lot of folks.

Is there any reason that you could not have a creature that is both Entropic and Celestial? Chaos and Good aren't in conflict.

No reason other than flavor for specific creatures.

Are there any plans to expand a bit on the whole biomechanical obeservation devices thing, in the form of hinting in some of the game material? Because honestly it makes gnomes (already a fairly interesting and tragic race) even more fascinating. But some rumors or hints in game material would probably be pretty fun to see and get players thinking.

No plans yet... and it's not biomechanical in any event. It'd be more proper to call it biomagical.

If a creature doesn't have a land speed... it technically doesn't have a speed to modify and therefore boosts tot hat speed are lost (kind of like modifiers to Constitution are lost on undead or constructs).

A fast zombie giant squid would technically get no benefit from the speed bonus, but I would recommend giving that bonus to its swim speed, since that's obviously the intent of the template. Same goes for things that grant boons based on land speeds.

1) Having "dire animal" parents. It's not a template. It's a common name for different species of animals who, in fact, have real names like smilodon or daeodon. AKA: The way you become a dire animal is the same way you become a squirrel or a lizard or a human. You're born to that type of parents.

You can certainly worship Asmodeus while being lawful neutral, or neutral evil, for that matter, but you'll be tempted and, more likely, tricked VERY often by church-related stuff into performing acts that edge you closer and closer toward lawful evil. If you remain low-profile, that's probably all that'll happen, but the higher profile you get, the more likely you'll be persecuted or imprisoned/disappeared/killed for being a heretic.

And in any case, worshiping and thus supporting the religion and spreading its word promotes its associated alignment, so even if you're working to be lawful neutral, you ARE in some small way at the minimum spreading lawful evil–if only by encouraging the lawful evil elements of the church to become (if only slightly) more active in response to your actions.

It's technically legal for PFS play, but I would STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY recommend against it, for 2 HUGE reasons:

1) We often use the evil deities as focuses for bad guys in our adventures. In a home game, the GM has the leeway to adapt that plotline to fit a group that includes a worshiper of that evil god. In PFS, GMs do not have that, and in that case there'll be some adventures sometimes that your character will not really fit with—you'll be forced to act directly against your religion if you do, and that can make you sad.

2) You might understand and enjoy the shades of gray and "gaming the system" of having a non-evil worshiper of an evil deity, but that's not something that EVERY PLAYER will understand and/or enjoy. Since you often have no real control over who the other players in any one PFS game you sit down to play will be, and since there's a strong "NO PVP" element endorsed by the campaign, you'll be making the game less enjoyable for anyone in the group who's playing, say, a paladin or a character who's anti-devil. In PFS play, you really do need to be aware of the fact that the more "fringe" and "outlandish" your character gets (whether the character does so in a story flavor way like this, or does so with rules by making strange and weird class/archetype combos), the more likely that character is going to be clashing with the quite rigid rules of PFS play. Characters like the one you mention are MUCH better for home games. Play something less outlandish for Pathfinder Society, is my heartfelt recommendation.

As for Infernal Healing... how commonly available it is depends on your GM. It's a non-costed material component, in any case (it's not enough to be worth anything), and as such it would indeed be negated by Eschew Materials (but that would NOT negate its "EVIL" descriptor).

Correct. In earlier (pre 3rd) editions of the game, the dire wolf was the only "dire" monster in the game. During 3rd edition's design, the designers decided on extending the word "dire" to cover ALL prehistoric non-dinosaur creatures. Which is, in my opinion, a pretty lame and frustrating decision, and one I fought tooth and nail to do away with in Pathfinder. I mostly lost that argument due to the "backwards compatibility" requirement, but I was able to attach those animals real-world primeval names to their entries as a sort of compromise. We'll still use "dire" when we make up stats for monsters who didn't have significant prehistoric variants who fit the model of a "bigger, tougher monster," or in the case of new ones, we increasingly just introduce them as primeval monsters/megafauna. AKA: We introduced it as a megatherium, not a dire sloth. Because, obviously. Who can say "dire sloth" without laughing? I bet there's no game group out there who can meet that challenge.

Homo Erectus would more likely be lumped into the same category as a "caveman" entry, if we were to do that in the first place. Or maybe all lumped in with "neanderthal."

Losing 2 points from Con always applies a -1 hp/level penalty to the max and current HP, regardless of what's causing that Con damage/drain.

Two reasons.

1) Favored terrains were new to the game, and weren't forefront in our minds when we were working much later on the Environment chapter, which is much more modeled on 3.5's edition than the ranger's favored terrain were. AKA: we forgot/didn't notice they were different.

2) Even if we HAD noticed, I doubt we'd change things, because the book was already huge, and we would take as many space-saving tricks as we could (like combining forest with jungle). Furthermore, I'm not really sure that the disconnect between the ranger's favored terrains and the categories of terrians in the Environment chapter actually causes any problems at all. I've never noticed it causing problems, and this is the first time I've heard of anyone even noticing that disconnect, so while it's a curiosity... I wouldn't call it a significant problem. Or even a problem at all.

1) No, they aren't. That's why they're not listed as bloodlines, but instead listed as archetypes. Things like Eldritch Heritage and that robe would work off of the associated non-mutated bloodline's rules, and would likely need your GM's adjudication to clear up problems should they arise.

2) Nope; having mysteries and bloodlines work different is good, because it helps further make those two classes feel unique and different.

3) The fibre inside the bellies of those he eats.

4) It's overkill. Like putting powdered sugar and brown sugar on your Captain Crunch, and then using strawberry milk instead of normal milk. You can do it, and some folks might like the taste... but it's still weird and overkill. And there's a lot of unnecessary overlapping.

1) No. Each weird sound has to affect one target.

2) No; these words inflict physical damage, and as such they must abide by the rules for physical damage if you come up against a creature that has damage reduction against bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing.
3) You can't maintain this ability. You use it up the round you activate it (as a standard action).
4) Yes.
5) Yes.

It's a bardic performance—it's listed under that heading. It replaces the suggestion bardic performance. It may not specifically say "this uses 1 bardic performance" but it does. Each use of bardic performance gives them a bunch of sounds (maximum 10).

That is also true. I'll answer them here, but folks sometimes seem to get worked up and intolerant since my name isn't listed in the rulebooks as a designer all the time.

No wisdom. I wasn't involved with all that internal design—that's a Jason Bulmahn question. My gut tells me that he did it that way because Static Feat gives you a one-time boost that single level, while Skilled gives you a boost EVERY level. But again... dunno for sure.

Does it bother you when people say "player" when they mean "character" as much as it bothers me? I feel like doing a double take every time I see a thread where someone wants advice about whether to let their players die.

It doesn't bother me as much as it amuses me.

I'm more bothered by things like:

    [*}People who spell Treerazer's name with an o.
  • The half-dragon template when it's applied to humanoids.
  • Succubi as devils, not demons.
  • Hangnails.
  • Improper apostrophes.
  • Overuse of acronyms.
  • Paladins of Asmodeus.
  • Summoners.

Dwarves, sure.

But musicals would in fact go on the actually quite short list of things I hate.

The chances of us doing a dragon equivalent of a tiefling/aasimar are remote. In my opinion, Dragonlance did this best with the draconians. To the extent that I'd rather not poach that success.


Finished going through the Advanced Races book today. There was a reference to a group of beings I have never come across before

In the entry for fetchlings, it mentioned that they seldom ruled themselves, but often served powerful umbral dragons and Nihiloi.

What are Nihiloi? Is this a generic term for powerful shadow creatures, another word for Kytons, or some new type of being we haven't seen yet? It's definitely an intriguing name that raises questions on what exactly they are.

What are Nihiloi? Is this a generic term for powerful shadow creatures, another word for Kytons, or some new type of being we haven't seen yet? It's definitely an intriguing name that raises questions on what exactly they are.

The nihiloi area a race of chaotic neutral outsiders from the Plane of Shadow. They were detailed in Pathfinder #29. We've not done an awful lot more with them beyond their appearance in that volume's Bestiary though.


The nihiloi was an epic fight in that AP! Loved it!

It depends entirely on the deity, frankly, and the way in which the worshiper is drifting away from the deity's alignment. Paladins of non lawful good deities have their own discussions elsewhere on how they worship and the like (particularly in Faiths of Purity and Faiths of Balance).

Not all religions are equally intolerant of "alignment drift" and not all factions in a single religion are as well.

I prefer to think that the evil religions are the most intolerant of it, simply to preserve them as "bad guy" organizations that we can use in adventures without fear that we'll be inadvertently building adventures that PCs won't be able to go on because it'd be like sending them in to loot their own home.


In the realm of silly, should Prostitution be a Profession skill (which makes it a superior skill for Dwarf characters), or a Perform skill (which aims for all the CHA folks out there, including Paladins)?

It seems rather silly to me that Calistria might have more use for Dwarves than Elves.

I actually wouldn't call that the realm of silly—merely the realm of "Probably not appropriate for a Core Rulebook due to its mature nature."

Prostitution would absolutely be a Profession skill, but if you really wanted to go down that road, I'd probably qualify sex itself as a Perform skill for these purposes.

As an analogy, think of it as the difference between simply selling musical instruments (which would be Profession) and actually playing them well enough to be paid for your performance ( which would be Perform).

1)What about a Dragon blooded race that is more a kin to Daenerys from Game of Thrones were they look human(for the most part)? They might have strange eye/hair color, some scales in places, reptilian eyes, etc. but still look like humans(or whatever other of the core races)

2)I know you saw Prometheus so what did you like? didn't like? favorite character(s)? least favorite(s)? did you like the design of the "Engineers"?

3)Other then the core races, what races in the Advanced Races Guide would you allow players to play as? What wouldn't you allow?

4)Can A half Contruct be healed by healing spells or do you use spells like mending, make whole etc.?

5)What is favorite comic book movie? Favorite comedy? favorite sword and sorcery movie?

    A question if you have the time.

    The Planar Oracle Archetype. At 20th level are they an outsider like a tiefling is an outsider or an outsider like a succubus is an outsider?

    The text says they have the Extraplanar subtype when not on their new home plane and the native subtype when they are. The text does specify that the character can still be brought back like a member of their previous creature type, so a clarification would be appreciated.

    Also, does the change in creature type affect the character's longevity in any way?

    1) Daenerys from Game of Thrones is more akin to a unique creature. Her race is human... she's a unique special case. Game of Thrones spoiler:

    After all... if all of her line were of a special dragon human race... her brother wouldn't have died when the molten gold was poured on him!
    She's absolutely NOT what you get when you make a half-dragon humanoid though... not even close.

    2) I loved Prometheus... especially the visuals and the effects.

    My favorite characters were Liz Shaw, David, and the Captain. My least favorite? Probalby the ones who didn't get much to do and thus I remember them only as "the doctor" or "the biologist." I did indeed like the design of the "Engineers." I ESPECIALLY liked how it felt like its own movie, and didn't try to be a direct Alien prequel... but at the same time worked perfectly as an Alien prequel.

    3) That depends 100% on the campaign I was running. Normally I only allow core races, though.

    4) Those rules would depend on what sort of half-construct you were talking about. I'm not sure we've done a half-construct yet, in any case, so I'm not sure what to base these answers on anyway.

    Nope.

    Had I plotted out that adventure from the start, but more or less followed the same line... I would have made the hobgoblins worship Tiamat still but would focus on her role as a devil, not a dragon. And that would mean a half-fiend hobgoblin instead.

    But I was brought on after Rich Baker had already outlined the adventure and had written the first part (up to the hydra attack)... I had a LOT of leeway in what happened after that, but the boss and the element of dragonspawn was already locked in. Pretty much all the rest was from me though.
