Geas / Quest spell --- Is this open-ended task?

Rules Questions

With a Geas/Quest spell, it has a duration if the task is open-ended, meaning it can't be completed through the character's own actions.

That's still pretty vague. I have a Quest spell placed on a PC that refrains him from a course of action. That action being "You shall not harm the undead."

So is it permanent until dispelled? Or is that considered a task he cannot complete through his own actions? (giving it a duration)

Hmm, what about this? "You must harm undead."

I don't have the spell text in front of me but off the top of my head I would want something more specific.

No I had it as he cannot harm undead, since he channeled energy in a shrine to Myrkul and suffered the consequences of a shrine as detailed in the FR book, Champions of Evil. I doubt Myrkul would want him to continue harming undead.

I am curious as to whether its permanent or is it something that should be a duration?

It's an on-going task that cannot ever be completed, so it has a duration.

I see what you mean. Someone can't "complete" never harming the undead. Whereas something like "seek out this artifact" is something that can be. It may take awhile or never happen but it can be completed.

Ok, that helps clear things up.
