Vampires need fixing?

Rules Questions

So the example vampire is CR 9, but was an 8th level sorcerer. But the template says CR increases by +2. Shouldn't that have been CR 10? What CR would a human commoner turned into a vampire have?

If I remember correctly, CR of PC classes has been dropped to level -1, and NPC classes to level -2.

Remember, please spay and neuter your vampires.

you are correct, a PC class' CR is level -1, so a level 8 sorc is CR 7, add in the +2 from the vampire template and you have 9.

So if I apply the template to a human commoner, CR -2, I get a CR 0 creature with vampire powers?

There is no CR 0. Its special CR math. 1-1 = 1/2 1/2-1 = 1/3 etc.

Edit: So a level 1 commoner is CR 1/3. (1-2 = 1/3). Add to that the vampire template and it becomes CR 1.

Need 5 hit dice to get the vampire template. It'd have to be a fifth level human commoner.

Or a first level (insert various brand) giant commoner, since giants are now humanoids :)

Ooo... vampire Giants! You just gave me a brilliant idea!

We were starting rumors of Hill Giant Vampires years ago in Living Greyhawk. We even figured out a way to make them by the rules in 3.5 D&D thanks to the odd Yak-folk race's abilities regarding giants.

Was a pretty silly thing, Yak-folk vampire riding around in a hill giant. Couldn't energy drain with the slam but it could use staffs and drain blood.

So regular commoners become vampire spawn instead?

yes if the vampires wills it, they become spawn, provided they are humanoid.

by the way vampires can be made from any living creature.. succubus vampire is my favourite I think ;)

In the "Twilight" series, vampires don't burst into flames in sunlight, they sparkle.

Do "non-native" Outsiders count as "living" for this purpose?

Well outsider do count as living, though I actually disagree somewhat, since they are mostly created from souls and such I am not going to split hairs when it allows a DM (me) to create something sweet ^^

Succubus vampire seems a bit redundant in retrospect, way too much overlap.

I need a new favourite.. do elementals count as living ? silliness extreme, but maybe a vampiric invisible stalker ;)

vampiric satyr could actually turn out nice, I'll try make a villain out of it see if I can come up with a nice background too.

May they be beaten to a bloody pulp, thrown in a blender and shoved in pig intestine to be tied off into sausage links and cooked in the sun.

let me guess you have a girlfriend that just doesn't stop drooling over sparkling vampires...
