Help running the goblin patrol sneak attack

Council of Thieves

I'm referring to the goblin patrol (1 goblin scout) sneak attack in the sewers. What is the proper way to run the scenario? How many stealth checks would be involved? One for hiding and then one for sneaking? And will both checks be opposed against those of each of the 4 PCs? If so, the goblin doesn't have really much a chance of succeeding.

Also the stealth check for moving silently will probably be at a penalty as the PCs are on the move and the goblin has to catch out with them. Or won't it?

I plan on the following:

Goblin takes 10 on his stealth to hide in the muck, letting the PC's go by. If they notice him (very unlikely, as his stealth + circumstance mod's of being in the sludge + distracted penalty will likely yield a success on Mr. Gobbo's part) then combat begins normally.

If they don't notice him right away, he sneaks up, makes a single attack (which will likely MISS given my luck) and maybe stays around for 1 more. If he gets initiative on the first target, a second sneak attack comes around, then he'll beat feet.

So, you're looking at the party making 1 Perception check on the hoof, vs a set DC (don't remember his stealth offhand), followed by a "surprise, you got stabbed" surprise round, followed by initiative.

If he's following them, then yes, multiple stealth vs. perception rolls come into play, but until combat happens, I generally have the sneak-er taking 10 to set a static DC for seeing him/her.

Thanks a lot for this. One question: doesn't the sneak up from the muck to strike the back of the last PC require a separate Stealth check?

Thanks a lot for this. A couple of questions:

Does the party roll just one Perception check (using the modifier of the PC with the best Perception) or does each PC roll separately?

Also, doesn't the sneak up from the muck to strike the back of the last PC require a separate Stealth check?

if he waits until the target is adjacent prior to popping up, no, his perception check has already been made and is done.

pop up, stab, roll init.

if gobbo gets to go 1st, stab again and run away. otherwise, gobbo probably gets bopped and dies.

Yes, I realized only after posting that he would actually be adjacent to the PCs. Thanks again for your help :)
