Issue 324

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

I just received my latest issue and I have to comment on the Cover. This is more like it!!!! The depth on this cover is great. The detail, right down to the drops of blood pooling in the slush under the hands, hearkens back to the issues in the early hundreds.

I'll write back with more comments on the content later -- after I get a chance to dine on the magazine as dessert (my wife is calling me to dinner as I type).

Yeah man, doesn't that cover rock? When Matt told Wes and I the concept, we knew it was going to be cool. Then Sean showed us the sketches and...oh wow!

:)

The cover for 325 also harkens back to the good ol' days, so we hope you like it as well.

We look forward to hearing what you have to say about the contents. :)

Thanks for the feedback!

Very nice! Cool cover art and great interior content! Love the new Classacts sections with something for every PC,and the Sworn Slayer was pretty cool.

Layout . . . .ok, well, I really like the content and the cover was cool!

Succesful magazine guys.

Nice job.

A friend of mine has an article in #324. I'm looking forward to getting my copy so I can give it a read. :)

Another friend of mine has an article in #325. I'm anxiously awaiting that one, too. :D

Very nice cover. Kudos to all involved.

My initial impression of the issue wasn't terribly positive, but I have to admit that it's growing on me as I read through it again. While a lot of its content isn't directly applicable to my game (the exceptions being the Quori and the ice monsters), the HP Lovecraft article was very cool, and actually taught me some things I didn't know about D&D/Cthulhu mythos connections.

I'm still a little iffy on Class Acts... most of them were good, but I think the section has a lot of potential that remains untapped. The "Flaws" articles in particular left me a bit cold, although the Paladin Flaws included a few I might steal to give character to villains.

While I liked the Mike Hou art, the Exorcising Equipment and Sworn Slayer articles only became interesting to me when I started thinking about using their content in ways opposed to the authors' intent (Using mummy mites on PC corpses, & the Sworn Slayer as a genocidal warlord/maniac). But possibly this reflects more on me than on the articles in question...

The cover lookk good. I like it when tnere more to it then just a little thing in the middel.

It is a nice cover, but...

other than the issue before #323, it is the same kind of stuff we see every week. What ever happened to middle ground, and background. What ever happend to the old "vintage style" covers. What ever happened to fights on the covers. All we get now are 1. bad guys grimacing or 2. good guys looking at you as if they wanted to have sex with you. I believe there is a place for that on the cover of Dragon (and Dungeon) but every month.

My two favorite covers were from issues #119 and #126. They were both painted by Daniel Horne. Both great winter fight scenes. Both covers could have encounters written around them.

I know this isn't the 80's and I don't want to see covers with old men in their knickers pointing at a globe either. (not that I thought that it was a poor work of art, just inappropriate for the mag).

Anyway, just mix it up sometimes.

Peace

oh yea, one more thing:

I wanna see some Larry Elmore art. (Is he still alive? Was that horrible of me to ask?)

I found a website of his, and yes, it looks like he is still alive. As for more of his art in the magazines, I agree with you. I would also like to see the occasional female warrior or adventurer with something less than Barbie porportions and clad in something other than a fur bikini - just once and awhile.

While I agree with the general sentiment, I still think #324 pulled it off very well. There's some nice detail on the figure, and I thought the washed-out background was appropriate in this case.

I gotta say, I was really glad to see some more on the Quori. I was a little disappointed with the Kalaraq, though. It looks that the big-bad of the Quori got shafted on the mental attributes though. I'd have figured them for at least as smart as Pit Fiends and Balors, personally.

Aside from that, though, the issue was great!
