Barathu Early Stage Adaption

Rules Questions

Alien Archive says you can use this ability every 1d4 rounds. Does that mean if I roll a 1 I can use the adaption in the first round of combat or I wait one round and can use it in the 2nd round.

Typically an ability like this is always available until you use it.

When you use it, roll a d4, then wait that many rounds until you can use it again. A one would be on the next round.

Are you sure? The way it's worded in Alien Archive makes it sound like you have to roll in the first round to see when you can use it the first time.

Sovereign Court

Garretmander's interpretation is the way I've always seen mechanics like this (breath weapons!) used.

Interpreting the ability this way would imply that an early stage barathu needs to roll a d4 every 6-24 seconds of game time, combat or not, to see if it's available. Using it that way is simply not viable.

It should be once they use it, they roll a d4, once the number of rounds are up, it's available at all times until they use it again.

Are you guys sure a roll of a 1 doesn't mean you skip the next 1 round?

I've always treated as it's ready in one round - the next round.

The ability says 'once every 1d4 rounds'

Rolling a one becomes 'once every one rounds', or 'once a round'. So every round as long as you keep rolling ones.

That makes sense.

"An early stage barathu’s body is mutable and can adapt to many different situations. Once every 1d4 rounds as a swift action, an early stage barathu can reshape its body and adjust its chemistry to gain one of the following qualities. The adaptation lasts until the beginning of the early stage barathu’s next turn. Unlike more mature barathus, early stage barathus are not generally capable of more complex adaptations."

I read that as meaning before round one of combat you roll a 1d4. If you roll a one you can use the adaption in round one etc.. The way we've done it is you only roll once at the beginning of combat and that is what you get for the entire encounter.

Edit: Actually, if you aren't using it at the start of combat, why is the ability on recharge?

Ok I see what your saying so use it the first time any time you like and after that the roll determines when you can use it again.

Exactly.
