The World is Ready. Are You?

Deep in an ancient forest, a trembling young woman enters the clearing where a ramshackle hut crouches on birds’ legs.
Far below the earth, a caravan of kobold merchants passes through a stone archway carved with the faces of leering ghouls.
High atop a northern mountain, a dwarf grips his battle-axe and gazes over the rim of the world toward whatever fate the gods have in store for him.
This is Midgard, and its gates are now open.

The Midgard Campaign Setting brings to life a dark world of deep magic, with seven regions flavored by the folklore of Central and Eastern Europe plus a heady dose of weird fantasy. Lead designers Wolfgang Baur, Jeff Grubb, and Brandon Hodge led the Open Design community in a two-year project to build a sprawling setting supported by adventures and sourcebooks compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Dungeons & Dragons, AGE System, and more.

Midgard is ley line magic and warped alchemical experiments; the Western Waste’s giant, shambling horrors and magic-blasted landscapes; diabolical gnomes and the schemes of immortal Baba Yaga; wild, wind-riding elves and swashbuckling minotaur corsairs; the Mharoti Empire’s lethal assassins and exotic splendors; and the dragon-haunted crags of the icy Northlands.

The Midgard Campaign Setting 296-page book includes:

  • Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and AGE System rules for gearforged, kobold, and minotaur PCs
  • 26 new backgrounds, 3 new schools of magic, and new specialties for AGE System
  • New clerical domains including clockwork, moon, hunger, and beer
  • More than 50 kingdom write-ups, with new feats and traits for each region of Midgard
  • New spells, magical items, and incantations
  • New gear and weapons unique to the setting
  • Ley line magic and the secrets of the shadow roads!
From the Northern fjords to the hidden tombs of the gnolls, from the raven-headed reavers to the ruins of the great mage-kingdoms: all of Midgard is yours!

"A wonderfully rich and beautiful sourcebook chronicling the world of Midgard. Think of how many game masters have fancied their campaign worlds awesome enough to publish in the book. So few actually have the writing and publishing chops to accomplish this, and to do so with such style is pretty much unheard of." —WIRED GeekDad Holiday Gift Guide 2012
"What I look for in a setting book, particularly a fantasy setting book, is something that inspires me to run a game there—a book that draws me into the world, presents setting material in a way that’s both useful and entertaining, and looks like it will shows its best qualities at the table. The Midgard Campaign Setting is all of those things, in spades, with extra magic gravy on top. This is a superb book that I can recommend without qualification to any GM who likes well-realized, gazetteer-style fantasy settings." —Martin Ralya, Gnome Stew
"If you’re looking for a campaign setting that is familiar with a twist, and a book that is the spiritual successor to the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, the Midgard Campaign Setting is for you. ...There is stuff here you can steal for your own setting, and it’s 'generic' but different. This goes double if you loved the 3e Forgotten Realms campaign or Mystara." —Critical Hits

So, it looks like my softcover got pushed back again to Sidecart City. Any update on the backorder printing and when physical copies will be shipping again?

Andoran

The reprint required that some minor but quite time-consuming prepress/technical isssues be resolved. If I had to hazzard a guess, I would say 'very soon' would be an reasonable answer!

I purchased the Midgard Campaign Setting pdf a while ago in the Paizo store, in october 2012 if I recall correctly, and I was wondering if my copy is up-to-date:

was this pdf updated with the error corrections added to the second (physical) printing ?

I ask because in the bottom of the credits page it still reads (I just redownloaded it from the Paizo digital store to be sure):
"First Printing - September 2012".

This book is one of my favorite RPG books of all time.

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

That's the old printing. The new one says "Third Printing."

Is it possible for me to download the "Third Printing" pdf from the Paizo digital store free of charge, or would I have to buy a new pdf ?

I guess my real question is: when I buy a pdf from Kobold Press, does it cover the purchase of the subsequent revisions/corrections of it (like Paizo does for its line of products).

Huh. I just checked my PDF copy (bought from OBS in July 2013) and it's also a first printing.

Paizo Employee Webstore Gninja Minion

The PDF has not been updated on Paizo.com since October of 2012 (first printing).

Is there any plan to update the old pdf on paizo.com to the 3rd printing ?

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Yes there is. You should see it shortly.

Hey Wolfgang, it still says first printing on the PDF, is that just an over sight or is it not actually up yet (I got an email that says it is updated)

EDIT: it appears to be slightly smaller file size than my original PDF

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

That's an oversight, unless the graphic designer exported the wrong file. Is the city of Melana on page 129? If so, it's the third printing file.

And yes, should be slightly smaller than the first PDF.

On pg. 227 there is a reference to the "speak with machines" spell. Beyond this reference on the kobold web page I can't seem to track down specifics for this spell.

Am I missing something somewhere?

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Good question!

It's a reference to the Zobeck Gazetteer, I believe. If you don't have that, substitute the Mechanical Empathy ability from the cyborg bloodline on the Kobold blog.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm making my way through the Gazetteer. Not seeing anything yet, but the bloodline ability will work fine.

We've received a small amount of Midgard Campaign Setting in hardcover—enjoy!

It looks like I missed the new print run. :-(

Is there any hope of another in hardcover?

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Someday, yes, but not before June at the earliest.

I just want to say, the Dragonkin would make an awesome paladins of Apsu on Golarion. They've got the draconic flavor, and +2 str/and cha to boot!

...On the other hand, I thought the stat penalties on the minotaur were a bit rough.

Grand Lodge

Have people used this with AGE? Does the product come with information to use for monsters or do you need a separate bestiary?

From my understanding the AGE information is in an Appendix near the back. Give me a bit and I can answer you via my friend's copy.

I finally got my hand on this book thanks to the minions at Paizo. Between this and Deep Magic, I've been really impressed by your hard covers. I really hope we can see another one soon. (Maybe a kickstarted expanded guide to the city of Zobeck.)

The next Kickstarter will detail the Southlands of Midgard, and apparently launches in a week or so/after GenCon?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Also there is the Zobeck Gazetteer that is the definitive guide to that city.
In addition there are other Zobeck-related products - check the Kobold Press product list for a comprehensive list.

Then check out Sunken Empires, Dark Roads and Golden Hells, Journeys to the West, Midgard Tales and Midgard Legends. Plus Northlands and.... You get the idea. There are also Player's Guides to plenty of Regions. Lots of Midgard content to make the Campaign Setting really come alive...

I know, and it was the Bundle of Holding that introduced me to Zobeck. I'm just a big fan of hard covers, and I really like the feel of the paper and binding of Kobold's hard cover books. I think an updated print compiling existing material with new material through KS stretch goals would be something to look forward to.

Either way Midgard has joined Deep Magic as one of my favorite books to have at my night stand.

Andoran

Who is the Red Queen (in Midgard) I can't figure that out?

If you like super awesome Kobold Press print books, you might want to keep an eye out for Southlands Kickstarter then :)

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Brutal Ben, I think an updated Midgard hardcover could be an excellent idea, but it won't happen for at least another couple years. We just don't have the staff for it.

Qstor, the Red Queen is a bit of a mystery figure, and unlikely to be revealed until a Dornig and the Lordly Houses regional sourcebook hits the schedule. If you need her in your campaign, she could be an ancient dragon with a host of followers, a fiery sorceress, or a dragonkin oracle devoted to Baal, as you prefer.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Modules, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I don't think the time is right for an updated Midgard book, but a "5th Edition" Midgard Companion might be something worth thinking about. I know I'd back that!

Andoran

Wolfgang - thanka. I was wondering cause there was mention of her in one of the books but no location given.

Qadira Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Deinol, I'd love to offer a 5th Edition companion but without an open license it seems somewhat iffy whether we'll get such a thing.

Qstor, I can provide the location: she's found on the peninsula near Krakova, NE of Dornig. Pocket kingdom there that seems to hold out pretty well against the dwarvish reavers and all other threats.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Modules, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I believe they plan on unveiling a license once all three core books are out, but I understand its near impossible to make plans until they do. If and when something becomes possible, you can count on my patronage. Of course, I'm just about as interested in a 13th Age companion, so I might not be the best audience sample.

Andoran

Wolfgang would the 3e Forgotten realms from Magic of Faerun spells like detect backroads be appropriate in Midgard? I like the use of the fey realms in the setting. I was thinking of using the spells in my game to let the players detect portals/gates to the fey realms?

thanks!

I'm not familiar with detect backroads, but it sounds like it would be appropriate for fey roads in Midgard, absolutely.

(Now I gotta go find a copy of Magic of Faerun!)

As do I. And hey, SKR helped write it.

I had two more questions :)

1. whats the closest Midgard human language to say Arabic?

2, Baba yagas daughters the veela, what game mechanics would you use for them? a human half fey witch?

thanks again

If you are interested in the closest Midgard human language to Arabic, perhaps you might want to check out the Southlands Kickstarter!

That didn't really answer your question, did it? :)

I think there's a pdf-version available over at that other place selling lots of rpg books in electronic format. (As is a lot of the Al-Qadim stuff, come to think of it.)
