Description: Winona is frequently on the trail, meaning that she's usually dusty, and she tends to braid or gather her hair. Still, she's a comely woman, lean and hardened by life in the frontier. She has dark brown straight hair and similarly dark brown eyes, and her skin is tanned to a light brown. She has nimble fingers and a surprising strength to her frame. Coming in at 5' 6", she's about average height for a woman, but she carries herself with hard-won confidence.
While in the saddle she wears working clothes: a drab blouse and pants with chaps, with a duster over it, and a Stetson to keep the rain off. In town, she tends to dress in a more subdued colorful blouse and skirt, and she has a "Sunday best" dress and bonnet that she keeps clean and neatly folded for special occasions.

Background: Winona's from the New Mexico Territory, where her family moved when she was very young. She has some mixed heritage, with a Mexican grandmother, but she was raised in a very American West fashion: She learned at a small schoolhouse where her mother taught, and her father served as a rail engineer for the burgeoning railroads crisscrossing the territory.
From a young age her mother drilled her with the importance of a liberal arts education, which instilled in Winona an appreciation for classical literature, drama, and visual and performance arts. She also loved horse-riding and the open plains, though, so she spent much of her time running about wild when she wasn't doing chores or studying.
At the age of eighteen, Winona was starting to look around at her opportunities (marriageable or otherwise), when her town was attacked and burned to the ground. The newspapers said that it was "local savages," but she survived the night-time attack and she knew that the things that burned her home to the ground were not human. As one of the few survivors of the massacre, she was rescued three days later when a Ranger came to find out why the train station and telegraph weren't responding, and she was bundled off, still in shock, to answer questions and start a new life.
Determined to not let this kind of tragedy strike again, and to figure out what kinds of things did this, Winona devoted herself to learning from the Rangers, and in time she was grudgingly given a position among them, as a Field Ranger. Her drive to show that she wasn't just a "pretty little thing" to be ignored, and to honor the memory of her parents and community, pushed her to develop her skills in horse-riding and gunplay.
With a few years of experience under her belt she became a reliable Ranger, though she had a penchant for riding off into the hinterlands following old spooky tales. She's nearly at the point of giving up on finding out what's really going on out there...

Personality: Winona's a no-nonsense woman, having spent a few years now chasing down crooks and bandits. She's been in a couple of gunfights, cut a few men who were overly forward, and isn't afraid to stick a shotgun under a man's chin and tell him what's what.
At the same time, she has a reasonably robust education, and she knows how to dance and can even read a little bit of Greek from the classics. She cleans up nicely and can fit right in at a tea party or formal dance.
Winona's driven by the horrors that overcame her family and her home, and she means to show that she's not weak. She often hides her sadness or grief, trying to show that she's Stoic. She can quote poetry, but pretends to be flippant about it. But she still has a soft side, and in tender moments she can open up and sometimes even let those feelings come out. This is rare, though, as she has few friends; people often disappoint her, whether with drunkenness, lechery, violence, or just pettiness.
Winona likes working with horses, though she sometimes becomes frustrated with how stupid they can be. She finds cats amusing to watch but hates hearing them yowl all night long. She likes dogs and children. She laughs off suggestions that she should settle down and have a family, figuring that she has several more good years of riding in her first.

This character is inspired by historical figures such as F. M. Miller and Ada Curnutt, and the fictional character of the Lady from the film The Quick and the Dead, with a dash of Paladin from "Have Gun, Will Travel."
